Rudi Johnson to visit Lions Sunday night (1 Viewer)

Free agent Rudi Johnson is visiting the Lions on Sunday night, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter. There isn't a more running back-needy team in the league. Johnson wouldn't be an obvious upgrade over Kevin Smith, but at least he'd give Detroit a proven power back. Johnson also shouldn't cost more than $1 million. Related: Lions

Texans | Rudi a possibility?

ESPN's John Clayton reports the Houston Texans could be a possible landing spot for free-agent RB Rudi Johnson (Bengals).

It's been said before on this board (by A.B.) that Detroit needs a RB who can play special teams, I don't think Rudy would be a good special teamer?

I didn't really understand the keeping of Tatum Bell. He doesn't play ST, 3rd downs, not good in short yardage, not a bad pass protector. I thought these types are on the waiver wire.

I guess Rudi would be a good signing there. If nothing more than to get rid of Bell.

Lions could definetly use him...

You would think when they relesed Pinner who knows the system/playbook this late in camp that Detroit would have a plan B...but then again, this is the LIons.

Very interesting what the Lions forum is saying... They want Rudi as their #1 back and Kevin Smith to be the primary kick returner/backup RB. :lmao:

If he was healthy would the Bengals not have kept him? Or, if they were trying to trade him and he was healthy would they not have at least played him in their last pre-season game to show that he was okay? Even if there are no takers on a trade the worst that happens is you cut him. This leads me to the conclusion that he's not healthy. He may get healthy at some point but I would think that unless he's completely healthy right now a team would want to wait until after week 1 to sign him.

I'm torn really. I own Rudi in one league and K Smith in the other. I was hoping for Smith to emerge as a solid #3. :P

They want to run the ball more this year, and Smith is anything but proven. IF they sign Perry, I'd be surprised if it's NOT a RBBC.

Broncos | Rudi a possibility?

ESPN's John Clayton reports the Denver Broncos could be a possible landing spot for free-agent RB Rudi Johnson (Bengals).

For the Young owners on the board

Rotoworld...Lions claimed RB Marcus B. Thomas off waivers from the Chargers.

San Diego took a big risk by waiving Thomas after his solid preseason and it didn't pay off. A fifth-round pick out of UTEP, Thomas immediately becomes Detroit's No. 3 tailback and could be the team's best short-yardage runner already, assuming a veteran isn't signed. Keep an eye on him.

Less likeli Rudi is signed after this...

Hmm...that makes me breathe a bit easier about Det, but the Denver situation isn't good.

I don't understand it...apparently Young is good enough to be their starter, Hall is coming on strong and is their best goalline back (threatening to take over as the starter?), Torain is so good he's going to come back and take the starting job when he's healthy, but they're going to sign Rudi :lmao:

If Rudi ends up in Houston or Denver I think his value is greater that it would have been with Cinn. Cinn is the new Detroit.

Is Clayton just going to keep throwing out team names until he gets it right?

Rudi Johnson visits Lions

by Tom Kowalski

Sunday August 31, 2008, 9:31 PM

Former Cincinnati Bengals running back Rudi Johnson is in town tonight and is expected to take a physical and have a workout with the Lions on Monday.

Johnson rushed for more than 1,000 yards in three straight seasons with the Bengals (2004-06)before his production dropped off last season when he gained 497 yards -- averaging just 2.9 yards per carry.

My point was that Young, Hall, and Torain have all been talked up in recent weeks. If they're so good, why does Den need Rudi, who is apparently so washed up :lmao:

IMO Rudi Johnson is washed up. But as a Lions fan, we need a few warm bodies at the RB position. Millen could do a lot worse. But for the record, I think you can stick a fork in Rudi. He's done. And any team that signs him is getting the same that they would get from any other over the hill, slow, washed up, journeyman RB. At best he will be good for a one or two more solid but unspectacular seasons.

Perhaps, but which RB's fantasy value is he going to hurt with those 1-2 productive, but unspectacular seasons? K. Smith, Young? At least if he goes to Hou he just becomes part of what is already a mess with the chance to start.

It's Detroit. They have one of the worst O-lines in the league. Worse than Houston. I don't think there was much fantasy RB value there to begin with. As a fan, I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see a solid running game this year even with Martz gone.

NFL | Rudi a possibility?KFFLSun, 31 Aug 2008 11:49:05 -0700ESPN's John Clayton reports that 31 NFL teams could be a possible landing spot for free-agent RB Rudi Johnson (Bengals).

Smith is smallish. Might not hurt to have a short yardage/gl back. Rudy fits better than bell.

As a Charger fan I'd like to take this opportunity to say - DAMMIT!!!You guys just stole a potentially decent player. You Kevin Smith owners need to keep an eye on this guy. I don't think he's NFL ready yet (still runs too high and isn't accelerating through the holes with authority), but his flaws are correctable. He's got a gliding style, decent wiggle, good speed and refuses to go down.If Smith gets hurt be prepared to pick this guy up.

3 NFL teams interested in the guy, a thread full of anonymous message board posters saying he is washed up.

I can't decide who I trust more.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but "Good move, Lions front office!"I feel dirty.
