Guyton played quite a bit last week against the 49ers. Belichick spoke pretty highly of him at today's press conference

What do you guys think about his upside?

We talked about him in Tuesday night's IDP podcast. You might want to give that a listen for the full flavor of the discussion, or check out some of the subscriber articles this week. He got a mention in my and Norton's column.

Guyton was a guy that I liked a lot pre-draft. Had the scouting report of someone that isn't particularly flashy at the workouts, but productive enough in college to emerge as a role player (or more in the right situation). He looked a lot like a 3-4 ILB in some respects. Didn't get drafted, and bounced through another 3-4 team (SF) at one point before landing in NE.

The Patriots may be a perfect situation for him. He's not particularly speedy, but none of the SILB in New England have been in recent seasons. A rookie who's been trusted with dime snaps in a Belichick scheme is a very positive sign. There's no one else on the roster with as good a shot at the other ILB job as him right now. That may or may not translate into much IDP value -- maybe LB3 upside in the long term -- but he's definitely worth watching. Crable, Mayo and Guyton could be the makings of a very nice LB core.

Guyton put up a great time at the combine as well as great results at the cone, shuttle and jumps. Unfortunately for him he also only did 15 weight reps which tied for the low among linebackers.

Seeing his name mentioned alot tonight in game. Is he worth a spot on a dynasty roster?

I think you'll see him settle in as the long term starter next to Jared Mayo eventually. He's absolutely worth stashing in deep leagues. He's got the wide skillset to stay on the field in all situations, which is half the battle for an IDP LB.

Both Sig and I weighed in above in print and video. My opinion hasn't changed much since we started talking about him in-depth last month.

I'd be shocked if Guyton wasn't starting at the SILB position by next season. Belichick isn't prone to giving rookies vital playing time unless they're ready to contribute and Guyton has been, at times, the only LB on the field. I don't see Tedy Bruschi in a significant role next year and Guyton is a better player than his offseason bounce around the league would suggest.

He's highly unlikely to ever gain LB1 or high LB2 value, but he's definitely rosterable if you're looking to the future.

Where would you put Guyton rank wise with the other rookie LB's this year and forward?

Quick tiered thoughts:LB2+: Mayo/LoftonLB2: RiversLB2-: DizonLB3 upside: Adibi/Kehl/GuytonUpside without any obvious opportunity: Bell/Gooden/Hayes

Thanks Jene, wondered where you'd put in compared to the likes of Kehl, Bell

Everything after Rivers is tough to project. None of my post-draft fears about Dizon have been allayed. Adibi, Bell and Gooden look much less likely to see viable opportunity in 2009 than they were this offseason. There's an argument to be made that Guyton may be ranked higher than anyone not named Mayo, Lofton and Rivers throughout the coming offseason. That's not necessarily saying he's a stud-in-waiting, it's more an indictment of something we feared in April and May -- that the middle ranks of this class weren't what they were in the previous two season for IDP purposes.
