The Baltimore RB situation (1 Viewer)

Well, another week gone by and we see McClain emerge from the depths with 18 carries for 88 yards. Obviously the Ravens don't know what they are doing in the backfield but it seems like if they stuck with McClain (assuming both Rice and McGahee are healthy), they would be doing fine. He is not built like an every down back but through the first 5 weeks I thought his production was right on par with the average back in the league, and definitely above expectations. Anyway, does anyone else think that the Ravens stick with McClain now that he has proven he can still run the ball consistently, or do they shut him down for a healthy Rice and McGahee? What do you guys think..unfortunately all 3 are on my roster.

 Obviously, since they are top 5 in rushing & lead the NFL in TOP while nurturing a rookie QB - of course they don't know what they're doing. McGahee - 489 yds while missing time; McClain - 459 yds; Rice - 382 yds.McGahee & Rice couldn't get anything going on the ground running yesterday (15 for 15 combined, I think) & McClain was running well, so he got the carries. There's been other games where LeRon's not run well and one of the others have. All 3 have their unique specialties & props to the coaching staff for figuring it out each game. Sucks from a FF perspective, but I think the Ravens have done a fine job mixing & matching the 3 of them.

True, I guess they all had their defined roles (McGahee starting when healthy but always getting injured, Rice slashing and catching balls out of the backfield, and McClain getting the goal line carries). At least they don't look like the Rams...where NONE of their backs can carry the ball.

I am pretty close to cutting mcgahee just to be done with it, worthless every time I start him. I thought he was the lead guy when healthy but apparently its just a huge ff mess.

I have Rice as pretty much my #6 back right now. I may drop him for another wr. Unless McGahee is ruled out, I don't see starting him.

Uruk, from a FF aspect is what I meant I guess, sorry for the mixup. I mean I understand a RB by committee approach, I really do...but when you go from giving a guy (Rice) 20 carries for 150+ yards one week to 7 carries the next, granted he only rushed for 17 yards on those 7 carries, how can you justify that you have a clear view of what you want out of your backs on a weekly basis? I mean we have seen it happen to all of their backs but like I said before, this is strictly from a bias FF standpoint and not meant in literal terms of production from the team.

It stinks from a FF perspective. I've tried to pick each week who I thought would be "the guy" for the upcoming game. This week, I thought Rice's talents suited playing the Eagles best........Most of my weekly picks have been about as accurate. I have all 3 in various leagues & had to play all 3 this week, mostly out of desperation (Rice was voluntary). But if I had legit choices, I wouldn't start a single one of them. The other thing that throws me off is, once the game starts, who gets the early carries may not have the big game The coaches obviously have something in mind because their rotation changes every week, but I'll be damned if I can see the rhyme or reason to the pattern.

I am thankful that thanks to DEN RB P. Hillis I no longer have to worry about starting / not starting McGahee is the right call. Thanks, incredibly easy to understand DEN Backfield! Thank you, Coach Shanahan!

It's the most situational use of RBs I've ever seen in this town. Harbaugh and Cam probably draw up the game plan based on what they see of the opponent's defense and then plug in whatever guy best fits the scheme -- initially, at least. Once they get going and start making adjustments on the fly, it could end up being somebody else who's the better fit. Look, this is a team with little margin for error. They have to play every series, every play like it's the one that will win the game. I think Cam is coaching his buttocks off, looking for every little edge he can get on every series and every play. And that means that nobody knows who's gonna be carrying the rock at any given time in any given game.

:goodposting: Roadkill is much more articulate than I was on this point - that, in addition to game-planning prior to kickoff, Cam is seemingly adjusting on each play in his chess game against the opposing D. The problem from a FF perspective is that the situation is so fluid there's no telling who gets off in that particular game (or half, or quarter..).

Gun to my head & if I were forced to start a Ravens RB each week, I would pick Rice just because I think he can accumulate points in more different ways. But, IMO, he's the least likely to have a 120 yd, 2 TD game.

So there ya go......Two Ravens fans telling you  I know it ain't much help, but sometimes there's just no answer.
