DB-Chris Mccallister released by the Ravens (1 Viewer)

Can he still play? If so, he could certainly follow Rex Ryan to NY and play opposite Revis.
Yeah, I'm kinda surprised by this move too. Is he washed up now? Paid too much for not producing lately?I agree that I could see him moving to NYJ to rejoin Ryan if they'll have him. Only problem is $$. They are stillin salary cap hell and he'll want a decent amount of $$ I'm sure...

McAlister always did whatever McAlister wanted. When he was playing incredibly well, and when the Ravens were all about a bunch of me-first guys, there was no problem. Now that his skills are in decline, but in particular, now that Harbaugh has made the Ravens all about the Team, McAlister quickly wore out his welcome.

He engaged early-on in a test of wills with Harbaugh and lost. He was just terrible in the Ravens' Week 6 torching at Indy, and got benched the following week in Miami when he came strolling into the lobby with a couple of women on Sunday morning -- late enough that some fans from Baltimore were already up and in the lobby to see him coming in, so that word quickly spread in Baltimore.

McAlister never played again, as the Ravens' 2-3 start turned into a 9-2 finish. I think his benching was key in selling Harbaugh's Team concept to the veterans, as they saw that there would be consequences for negative behavior. From that point on, McAlister developed a mysterious "injury" that lingered for several weeks before he finally had "surgery" that ended his season. There is still some question in Baltimore about whether or not he was really hurt, whether Harbuagh told him to leave, or whether he took off on his own.

All that being said, he still has a ton of ability when motivated to play. I think getting run out of Baltimore, combined with the need for him to sign an incentive-laden, short-term deal that will set him up for a big 2010 payday, will produce an outstanding 2009 season from McAlister.

But I doubt Rex Ryan will want anything to do with him. And I also keep hearing the Jets have cap issues, though maybe that went away with Favre.

Farewell, CMac. You were a #####, but it's no coincidence the Ravens D took off in 1999 once you joined the team. Your ability to single-handedly shut down top WRs launched thousands of blitzes and allowed the Ravens to conceal Duane Starks' limited skills with double coverage, and your size and willingness to take on RBs played a big part in setting the NFL's all-time record for fewest rushing yards allowed.

Nice summary. I guess that explains a lot...He'll find employment somewhere though.

Just thinking about the Ravens purge of players: McAllister, Rolle and likely one of the three LBs (Lewis, Suggs or Scott). Are these performance-related decisions or money-saving? I can't think of who the high-dollar guys on the Ravens are now outside of Ed Reed. Seems like they should have money to go out and sign some high-end players.

McAlister has been gone since Week 6. Though the $8 million in cap savings is a nice bonus. I don't think Rolle is a sure thing to be gone -- it all depends on whether they find someone in the draft, free agency or via trade that's better. There's no rush to cut him until after June 1. I think the Ravens will keep Lewis and Suggs; Scott is a system guy and they have a bunch of LBs ready to plug in (including last year's third-rounder, Tavares Gooden, who missed the season on IR).They also want to keep Center Jason Brown, though the price will have to be right. Reed is up at the end of 09, so resigning him is a priority, and Ngata is a free agent in 2010, so they want to have enough money available to keep him as well. The Ravens have done a great job of hanging on to their core players and letting the fringe guys go, which is why I'm confident that Suggs (and Reed and Ngata) aren't going anywhere. Look at who they've kept -- Lewis, McAlister (until now), Ogden, Heap, Reed -- vs. who they've let go -- Ed Hartwell, Duane Starks, Will Demps, Gary Baxter. Adalius Thomas was a very good player that they just couldn't afford to keep, but they didn't really miss a beat last year after his departure. Scott is another guy who will play well for someone else, but whose departure won't make much a difference in the quality of the defense. It's very early, the Ravens have cap room (including $8 million more today than yesterday), a front office with a history of hanging on to the team's best players, and an owner who even in these troubled economic times has the cash to write the kind of fat signing bonus checks that make players happy while providing cap relief.Ray gets signed, Suggs does too (though maybe with the franchise tag for another year), Scott leaves but isn't missed much (depsite being a good player) -- just not sure if Brown stays or gets an offer too rich/stupid for the Ravens to beat.

Giants, please, Giants.
 Webster, Ross and Terrell Thomas are a pretty damn good top 3 CBs and you want the Giants to throw some bucks at McAllister when there are more obvious needs at just LB, DT and safety?I just don't see where he fits into this Giants team and where they're spending priorities likely are.

That's some really good work by our GB, The_Man, though it must be noted that the Ravens' organization has been remarkably tight-lipped about the entire situation since McAllister was first benched. So we're all speculating a little bit here. But I think The_Man is right -- there was some sort of clash regarding off season preparation and in season work ethic between CMac and Harbaugh, and Harbaugh lowered the boom after Mac got lit up in Indy. All along, however, Harbaugh was attributing it to injury and telling the media what an important guy McAllister was to the team's future.

It may have been Harbaugh's toughest early call and he didn't, at least on the surface, hesitate at all. He shoved Fabian Washington in there, followed by Leonhard after Landry got hurt, and let Rex coach 'em up. That didn't turn out too badly.

If McAllister regains his health and screws his head on right, he could still help somebody else, though.

Ravens released CB Chris McAlister.

McAlister clashed with Baltimore's new staff and bad knees have destroyed his speed. The three-time Pro Bowler was due exorbitant 2009-2010 salaries, making this an easy move. His release saves $8M under the cap, giving Baltimore room to negotiate with Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs. McAlister, turning 32, will be a high-risk signing, but will have suitors.

Seems like the type of player who could still help a team at CB, but would also make a fine coverage safety. I'm sure he'll be looking for CB money though.

 Plus, I don't think he's "Giants Material"
Say he shoots himself in the leg. Would that do it for you?

I heard Billick on local Baltimore radio this morning talking about McAlister. Praised him for all he did, but also alluded to regrets that he (or anyone else) couldn't get McAlister to maximize his talents and become an all-time great, which Billick thought he had the potential to be.

Most interesting was Billick's suggestion that McAlister might not come back -- for the money CMac's likely to be offered, Billick thinks McAlister might just decide it's not worth it. That certainly tells you a lot about McAlister's mindset -- that he's so unmotivated about playing football, that $1 or 2 Million isn't enough to make him want to do it.

I still don't believe that's true. I think if someone can sign McAlister to a short-term and/or incentive-laden deal, they will get a highly motivated and talented guy who's still good enough to be a legit #1 CB. It's the team in 2010 that then gives him a decent signing bonus and salary that needs to be careful.
