Love it. I can't believe there are only a few replies on this. And I can't believe Dodds is the one doing it. OUTSTANDING!!

Can I use my Green Machine instead of a Big Wheel, or is this Big Wheels only?

I would find out what kind of Tricycles/Big Wheels they're using on Travis Pastrana's "Nitro Circus". Those things fly and are super-durable. He did a backflip on one over at least a 60 foot gap/jump. And landed it. Guy's nuts. Funny show, btw.

QUOTE (noleswin @ Mar 23 2009, 05:12 AM) You need to take a bicycle tire and mold it around the front tire of the big wheel. This will prevent the front tire from sliding out in the turns like some of the guys do in the videos. Yes my dad wanted to do a lot of that too, but for me the essence has to be that of a Big Wheel to me. This isn't really a race at all. People just go down whenever. It's more a bit of a tribute to anarchy and just goofing off. So my goal is to just make the Big Wheel strong enough to carry Big furry Elmo down the hill. Should be a ton of fun. I will bring some FBG merchandise out to the event and pass out if anyone goes there. My daughter, brother and dad will all be there as well. Hope to see some of you out there.

QUOTE (Addai's Adidas @ Mar 23 2009, 05:26 AM) Can I use my Green Machine instead of a Big Wheel, or is this Big Wheels only? yes I have seen those go down the hill too. Their really are not any rules at all. The guys that were really funny last year rode those giant garbage cans down the hill. They had made a rope steering wheel and tried their best to lean to steer it. Very very funny. I will see if I can get some pics with Jesus, Mohammad and the Mario Brothers who were all there last year

QUOTE (David Dodds @ Mar 23 2009, 03:09 AM) Big wheel arrived via Ebay this Friday. My dad and I laid out the basic modification plan tonight. I will start posting pics to show the modifications we will be doing:
- Going to inject foam into the wheels and plastic frame to make this more durable - Extending the back of the Big wheel with wood to give my fat ### (even fatter with Elmo costume) another 8-10 inches. This will also allow us to strengthen the support for the rear axle. We will reposition the back seat to this as well. - Threading the axles so we can put a nut on each end (many wheels fly off due to big people riding these above their 70 lb certified max weigh requirement). We also will design so that the axle cannot move from left to ride (slop in current toy design) - Killing the pedals for the front wheel (need that area to stick out my legs for stopping and turning) Holy hell- can you back it up a bit and replay your dad's initial reaction to helping his son out with his Big Wheel race? PLEASE take video and post for us!

OK, Dad took this on and has hammered out an awesome design here. Our foam idea was a bad one as the foam basically repelled the big wheel plastic (would not stick to it). This cause quite the mess. We were able to get some of the foam in the rear wheels which should help. My dad did the following modifications: 1. Added wood to bolster the frame and give me more room to ride on. It does not sound like a lot, but we gained 5.5 inches for the rear axle and I thing that will make a big difference. 2. My dad tried to use the stock axle that came with the Big Wheel, but bent it just trying to get it into the wood. No way would it have held up with me on it. In fact many of the Big Wheels do indeed warp their axle and lose their wheels because of this. We used rebar and PVC pipe to create a bearing. We will lube this up with some WD40 before each heat and should be solid. Finally we added washers and cotter pins to firmly hold the wheel assemblies in place. 3. The front end is mostly stock, although we cut off the pedals as they will just be in the way of my feet that I need to slow this thing down. We also bolted the steering wheel mechanism as it looked like it would not last either. The midframe does flex a lot (with us adding distance) and me weighing in at almost 3X the recommended weight so that could still collapse as we navigate the steep SF hills. Still left to do: - Going to clean up the frame a bit (still has excess foam goop on it) - Plastering it with FBG stickers all over it - Going to add a Sumo Squeeze Horn- Going to add Streamers - Going to add some of the stock Big Wheel Princess Stickers

Awesome.
Had I known about this I could have sent you my old one - it's in my aunt's basement.
I might have a great idea for next year - a classic 1950's era metal pedal car. I think it's still down there as well.
The no rubber tires rule is awesome.

QUOTE (bostonfred @ Jun 10 2009, 09:42 PM) It's not like anyone's reading this thread anymore anyways, so I'll admit it. Gordon Gekko was a pass around alias. I got a PM one day telling me the password, and I had it for a week. But part of the deal is we changed the password each time we gave it to a new guy. The mean stuff came two guys after me, I think, so I can't say for sure who it was, but I can say that the guy who had it in between us was none other than Aaron Rudnicki.
