Last year, Vernon Davis had a TE-unfriendly coach... (1 Viewer)

"He (new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye) told me the tight end is the focal point," Davis said Wednesday. "I'm looking forward it. He said he wants to get his playmakers involved." I'm sure Gore won't be emphasized AT ALL. ;)

Raye's development of Kansas City tight end and former Cal star Tony Gonzalez is a highlight in Raye's resume.

Another offseason of pimping Alligator Arms, I see. This news bumps him up in my TE rankings for sure. From about 30 to 27ish, although that's probably a bit too much.

Jimmy Raye has never been much of an OC, and I was really disappointed the 49ers didn't reach higher. I think it's annoying that the article gave Raye credit for anything to do with Tony Gonzalez' development. Gonzalez was Gonzalez, regardless of the coach in KC. I guess we can thank Cavs coach Mike Brown for making LeBron James so good too. Oh brother.

Different year, same speech concerning Davis. Davis is told he'll be a focal point as a rookie in 2006, and again in 2007, and again in 2008. And now 2009. But in 2009, Morgan is a year better. Crabtree is on board. Hill is there in the slot. They just signed Brandon Jones to a big contract relative to his past production. Bruce is still there. Oh yeah, and they are going to run the ball more too. It'll be interesting to see how all this is going to happen simultaneously.

Talk, talk, talk. I love to try to be ahead of the curve on things, but on Davis having anything like a breakout year I'll have to see it to believe it. 509 yards and 4 TDs are his career highs, in 2007, for fantasy TE14. If he tops those numbers in 2009 I'll be surprised.

rookie year 42 targets, 20 rec

2nd year 85 targets, 52 rec -- not bad

3rd year, here comes the passing guru in Martz, but one who never utilized the TE, 49 targets, 31 rec.

until i see VD getting 90-100 targets and fail to deliver, i can't quite label the guy a bust just yet.

He can't run routes and he can't catch. Other than that he's great.

I think he will be a focal point of the running game. If he blocks well he will have better opportunity to catch the ball.

Mike Martz and TE-Friendly offenses are mutually exclusive

Still wont touch him as a starting TE (i'd take him as a backup in the late rounds, but he wont get there). At some point, people will realize that just being strong and fast doesnt make you a good football player. It helps, but at some point, you need to have some actual skills. Davis hasnt shown those skills at this point and i'm not sure he ever will.

after being spurned last year, I'll wait until we see a few PS games 1st. But I am admittedly intrigued.

This guy got NO chances/opps last year (some of his own volition). But he has freakish speed, and skill (and after last year is a much better blocker-- ie will be in on most downs/distance) for a tight end. Let's not forget how ####ty the QB's in San Fran have been, really since Jeff Garcia. Last year there were 2 young guys with ZERO martz experience, and whatever the #### JT o'sullivan is.

I mean TE is all about opportunity. Have the OC say that he really wants to use his talent? ####. I'm in. (late TE 10-12)

SF - TE Vernon Davis maturing?

Source: Mike Sando, ESPN.com

Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis, who previously was too hot-headed for the 49ers to trust in critical situations, seems to be turning the other cheek this year.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

In times during practice where he may have engaged in a shoving match, a cooler Davis is walking away. He also seems to be catching the ball more consistently this summer. The 49ers intend to use him more as a receiver this year, but it is too early to tell how much the team will need him in pass protection.

He's also been dropping passes that were between the numbers. This is without the defense hitting him. Draft him at your own risk, but it's a mistake to expect much.

I swear I've herd this the past 2 off seasons as wellnot buying

V. Davis is a bum. Every year we hear how it's "going to be his year" and "he it a physical freak".... Bottomline is I have him as my 20th TE this year. He won't be on any of my teams...

Martz said he was going to get Davis involved more in the passing game too.
The guy knows how to wreck an offense and showcase the least athletic players (Shaun McDonald). Still trying to live off of 3 HOFers (maybe 4 now with Warner), in STL, his days in the NFL are pretty much over. I count only about 5 teams that would ever give this idiot another shot. Davis is an average TE with freak body. This will be the make or break year for him. Martz has a way of wasting one's talents.

I'll say it again - Vernon has been dropping a lot of passes in PRACTICE. This has been one of his biggest flaws and he's still doing it without the defense slamming into him. Once the hits start flying he'll be even worse.

Though the guy can block fairly well.

I bought into his potential a couple times and it never panned out for me. Potential is such a scary word that will bite a lot of folks in the rear. I'm not saying VD will not have a good year, but I won't be counting on him for points on my team.

I couldnt agree more! There are many TEs going ahead of Davis now that just do not make sense to me (Scheffler, Boss, Rucker, etc)? Rookie years are just that for WRs/TEs in most cases! They are rookie years. Learning still? Than in his 2nd year he had 85 trgts and 52 rec! Not that bad for a 2nd year TE? But the problem is everyone had him as a top 5 type right off the bat(and drafted him as such)? And than of course as pointed out Martz came in and as a Rams fan I know he is not TE friendly in his play calling! So now on to year 4! New Off Cord that "coached" above Tony G.(I can not give full credit when the player himself should get most of it when they are as good as Tony G)! And the new Off Cord already stating he would involve Davis more!Im not drinking the hype from the draft a few years ago that had Vernon in the top 10 and where everyone had him slated as a top 5-10 TE right off the bat? But I am one of the few that thinks Davis will have a good year and be a high top 10 TE!Projections: 95 trgts 71 Rec 886 yds 3 TDs
