Player Spotlight: Jason Witten (1 Viewer)

2009 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 120 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Jason Witten, TE, Dallas Cowboys

Player Page Link: Jason Witten Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Jason Witten has great size and provides a high quality option for Tony Romo to either dump off to or even hit in stride down the middle of the field. Witten has shown a knack for getting open and for his tough play. He should be relied upon heavily again this year and should be the #1 TE come year end.

Does the loss of TO help or hurt Jason Witten?
I figure it's gotta help. Imagine how many more looks he could get without TO being in Romo's ear complaining he's not getting the ball enough. But, a healthy Felix Jones for 16 games could take away some touches. He's head and shoulders above everybody else at the TE position.1000 yards and 6 TDs has got to be his floor.

I wouldn't underestimate the growth of Martellus Bennett (idoitic freestyles and youtube videos aside), the kid is a very solid pass catching tight end who will earn a larger role in the Dallas offense this year. The Cowboys have already been talking about going to more 2 tight end sets and getting Martellus more involved. That being said, no more T.O. can't hurt either.Witten Projections: Holdin Steady....79 Receptions 908 yards 5 TD's

:goodposting: Witten and Gates are a cut above the rest. As long as Witten (and Romo) stay healthy, expect more of the same.130 Targets87 Receptions1029 Yards11.8 YPR7 TDs

I think that his knack for getting open has been one of the biggest keys for his emergence and success. Too many times in the last couple of years I've seen a great pass rush, then all of a sudden Romo let it go to a Witten who had nobody within 5+ yds of him.90/1100/9, although I may be biased b/c I've become more invested in him this year in leagues in which I took over teams...

I see Bennett's production getting a significant boost this year. During his rookie campaign, all but 3 of his 21 receptions came after week 6, including a stint of 6 games in which he scored 4 touchdowns. Bennet is a very big (6'6"), athletic target with great hands, and the team has been very high on him this offseason. Roy will gobble up the lion's share of TO's receptions, but I expect Bennet to be more involved in every possession. Witten's in his prime, and isn't going anywhere, but since the 'Boys will make use of both players in the regular deployment of double tight end sets, I see Witten's presence as quite helpful in drawing cover away from Bennet, while Bennet will make only a slight dent in Witten's production.

Jason Witten is as solid as TEs come finishing as TE1 and TE2 in the past two seasons. However, with the league wide involvement of the TE as a down field weapon, the separation between the usual top tier candidates and the next level or two is less than it has been in the past. The Cowboys are now without TO and are counting on Roy Williams and their youth to pick up some major slack. I worry a little about Romo who proclaimed that he would be a more effective leader this season. That is just not something that you decide to do and I would not think that should be an announcement either.

I see a very good year for Witten regardless. I was surprised to see the decrease that he had in targets from 07 to 08. I think that this year's productivty should be very close to last year. I also see less TDs than it seems Witten would get.

Jason Witten 125 targets 82 catches 65.6% 968 yards 11.8 ypc and 5 TDs

:goodposting: one thing Witten has over the 'other' TE's in the league is that he consistently records the same ( or better) stats each and every year..Gates is an injury risk at this point, Gonzalez is with a new offense,Scheffler is with a new offense, one that does not utilize the TE as often as the previous coaching staff did, so his numbers are sure to plummet. Daniels is solid, he's bound to see an increase in stats with a full season from Shaub..Houston has an offense that will use the TE position early and often.Olsen will probably get an increase in action this season now with Cutler under center..Witten is about as steady as you could every hope for in a fantasy player..but without T.O. his numbers should actually increase, as Romo looks his way more often..Also, factor in Felix Jones...he's going to turn that running game upside down..:thumbup:Dallas' bread and butter is the play-action passing game, and with a strong(er) running game, that will only make the WR/TE positions more potent..85/1011/7 11.9 avg

I think both Witten and Bennett will have good years for TE's. Witten will get a lot of Red Zone stuff that Owens used to get. TD's go slightly up and everything else should be about the same.

135 Targets

89 Receptions

1012 Yards

no more TO to complain about Romo to Witten. Roy and the young WR's do a decent job pickin up TO's slack. more balanced offensive attack=another stellar yr for Witten.

90/1100/10

on a side note, i'm lookin forward to two TE sets with Martellus. this kid is gonna be a stud.

Bump in light of: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...er.36c447e.htmlSounds like Bennet could gobble up some of TOs targets, even more than Roy. Wow.

Witten will get the most targets . His numbers will come and barring injury, he is as sure of thing as there is. TO leaving really does not affect him IMO good or bad. If Romo stays healthy well scratch that Kitna will still be able to get him the ball. It is not like last season when they had a stiff for a backup. Witten to me is the number 1 te in fantasy football, well in football as well.

92-1021-6

I'm prepared to take him @ 3.11 in a 12-team, ppr, redraft.

One of the few players I HAVE to have on my team.
