Player Spotlight: Drew Brees (1 Viewer)

2009 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 120 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints

Player Page Link: Drew Brees Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Pencil in another big year for Brees. He's one of the most accurate passers in the NFL. He has tons of weapons to throw to, good solid RB in Pierre Thomas to keep defenses honest, and a matchup nightmare in the passing game....Reggie Bush. Should be in many shootouts this year.

4300 yds passing, 33 TD, 16 Int

His passing yards and touchdowns have gone up every season in New Orleans.

2006: 4418 26

2007: 4423 28

2008: 5067 34

I'm not saying. I'm just saying.

Top 5 Finish

NOS Defense has a long way to go to make the Saints run the ball more. Playing catchup most games will play into Brees' having good fantasy numbers. The Saints might finish just out of the playoffs making it a long push late in the season to try to sneak into a spot....

Pierre should be alright, but the playmakers are still Bush and the WRs. Brees may not be the best QB in the NFL, but his situation makes him the best FF pick.

I really don't see much need for a Drew Brees spotlight. He has been incredibly productive in New Orleans and now both their RBs are exceptional targets out of the backfield. He is about as sure of a sure thing that there is when considering QBs. The huge problem is that everybody realizes this. He is the first QB off the draft board in almost every draft so you have to commit to missing out on a top player at another position to draft Brees. Your best bet is for him to have a miserable game in week one or two and trade for him with a short-sighted impatient owner.

Drew Brees 410 completions in 610 attempts 67.2% 4514 yards 7.4 ypa and minimal rushing

Brees is obviously a stud, but it is worth pointing out that last year:

In 8 home games, he threw 23 TDs and 5 INTs.

In 8 road games, he threw 11 TDs and 12 INTs.

Not saying I wouldn't rate him as one of the top QBs, but if you get a really good number 2, and the matchup is favorable, Brees could be worth benching when he is playing on the road. I know all about the "never bench your studs" mantra, but you cannot ignore how much better he plays at home.

+ 1/2 of his 5000 (2500 or so) were on the road...Cant bench the guy

In 2006 and 2007 he was better on the road than he was at home.
