Player Spotlight: Torry Holt (1 Viewer)

2009 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 120 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Torry Holt, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars

Player Page Link: Torry Holt Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

This guy is on the way out. Last year was the fall off the precipice we all knew was coming, (just like Marvin Harrison). Getting drafted too high based on named recognition. His knees are toast and he has lost several steps. Being drafted as a low-end #2 WR which doesn't make any sense to me. He finished as WR #36 after 16 weeks in PPR last year. He goes from turf to grass, from an average passing team to a below-average passin team, and is now another year older.

Prediction: 56/700/4

I am not keen on Torry Holt's 09 prospects. I do think that he will have a positive impact on the Jags as he has historically been a good teammate and a hard worker (last season was not typical). However, he has had knee issues lately and has obviously slowed down physically. I think that the Jags will improve on their passing offense this year, but I think that the receiving pie will be split into quite a few pieces. I believe that Holt's value will be as a veteran mentor to the otherwise extremely young Jaguar WRs. Walker (if healthy), Thomas, and Dillard should all benefit from Holt's experience.

Holt's production should not keep pace with his ADP which is now WR33 and 89 overall. I would not be surprised if some of the Jags other WRsmove up in ADP as their success in the pre-season is documented.

Torry Holt 90 targets 50 receptions 56% 575 yards 11.5 ypc and 4 TDs

I don't like his knees, but after simmering on this one all month I think the potential reward is worth the risk where Holt's being drafted.

Given their offseason moves I think the Jags plan to lean on the pass a bit heavier this year. Their D is still a work in process, their only proven RB is a quality pass catcher, the tackles acquired in the draft are known more for their pass blocking, and they spent three picks on WR's. All the signs point toward a pass heavy attack and while there is a lot of potential talent at WR on this team Holt's the only proven commodity. I do not like his knees at all, he could be finished, but given where he's going in drafts the potential reward's justified.

Obviously Holt has lost a few steps and isn't the same player. However, he is still a savvy route runner and has awesome hands. I don't see him putting up numbers anywhere close to what he did in his prime, but I think you are too low on him. You are projecting him to have fewer catches and yards than Matt Jones had in this offense in 12 games.

Jags WR Torry Holt on two days of poor performances by the team's offense: "I'll keep this straight and simple. As an offensive unit we have to do a better job executing our plays.''

Here's a guy wondering why he signed up for the abuse called the Jags passing game.

I think properly valued, for the most part.

He's going in the WR32-36 range.

To match that ADP, he'd pretty much need to do, well, exactly what he did last year (64-796-3).

Can he match that in Jax? I think so.

Matt Jones pretty much matched that last season and he's apparently not good enough to be on an NFL team anymore.

The assumption is that he's going to a worse passing offense, but that's not really the case. STL threw for 3268/11 last season and JAX threw for 3620/15. Rams also had a lower completion % and gave up more sacks.

There isn't much competition in JAX for catches and there's nobody as good as Donnie Avery to compete for targets in JAX.

It's been a while since JAX had a WR that wasn't in the dog house at times during the season. They had a alot of below average WRs that got rotated in and out. Holt's a pro and whenever he's healthy, he'll be on the field and they'll try to get him the ball. I think that's important.

If his physical decline continues, I still don't think he'd hurt at his ADP. An old, beat-up pro like Holt could do what Matt Jones did.

If his knee's feeling good, he's got a chip on his shoulder, and playing for a marginally better team keeps an old man inspired, he could surprise.

People give up on veteran wide receivers too easily. It wasn't too long ago that guys like Hines Ward and Derrick Mason, Isaac Bruce, and Muhsin Muhammad were considered finished and look at them coming back. Torry Holt's younger than all of those guys yet people want to say he's done. He very well could be but then again there's still the chance that he's a very good wide receiver.

There was a lot of drama with the Rams last season besides the whole being a horrible team. Holt was feuding with the coaches and he just didn't want to be there. I think the change of scenery more than anything else could do him some good.

What's with all this knee talk? Torry Holt's missed 2 games in 10 years. If he has a bad knee he has a good way of hiding it.

I wouldn't be shocked if he had over 1000 yards next season. To get that from a guy who many consider done wouldn't be such a bad thing.
