Player Spotlight: Bernard Berrian (1 Viewer)

2009 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 120 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Bernard Berrian, WR, Minnesota Vikings

Player Page Link: Bernard Berrian Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

I got to think if Favre goes to Minnesota his stock rises alot. Berrian is a great deep threat and Favre likes to wing it. The opposing team will always have to worry about the run first when playing against Minn. and now with Harvin on the other side Berrian should be seeing single coverage.

I actually really like Berrian this year to break intot he top 20 and maybe the top 15

70 catches

1120 yards

6 td's

Berrian did a lot with less than 100 targets last year, including a monstrous YPC and ample YAC considering he was usually the deep option. While he's not the most polished route runner, the thought of what he could do catching passes from a HEALTHY Brett Favre has to have fantasy owners salivating. I know I for one will be targeting Berrian at his current ADP provided Favre comes back and shows us enough in camp to prove his shoulder is OK. In the event Favre doesn't save, er, play for Minnesota, I would temper my enthusiasm and think 1,000-yards would be too aggressive a forecast.

I'm of mixed opinion on Berrian.

At first, I also thought Favre would pimp him way up, but on second thought, people were saying the same thing about Cotchery last year, and I would have to think Peterson hogs production, so I'm not entirely sold.

I guess it really just depends on where you can get him.

I don't think whether or not Favre plays for Minnesota will make a difference. Sage Rosenfels is a huge step up from Frerotte and Tarvaris, and will win the job easily if Favre doesn't play. I own Berrian in a dynasty and Peterson in a keeper, so I've seen a lot of Vikes games. It was truly sad to watch Tarvaris completely miss Berrian (like 5 yards off). Frerotte was only a small nudge up.

If Berrian can put up 964 with those guys, he can easily put up 1100 with Sage/Brett.

I'll say 1150, 7TDs without too much research. I wouldn't consider it a "breakout" season, because he won't launch himself into WR1 territory, but I would consider it a "progressive" season, where he takes another step forward by having more help, and more maturity.

This spotlight is very interesting to me, as Berrian is part of a group of about 8 guys that seem somewhat interchangeable. Therefore, I want to determine which guy out of that group has the most upside. Bernard comes cheaper than most of them, so he's an interesting WR3 this year.

For what it's worth, I was listenin' to Sirius NFL the other day and Jiiiiiiiiiiiiiimmmmmmm Millllllllllllerrrrrrrrr claims his 'inside sources' tell him Sage might be on the outside lookin' in when Favre signs.

He says even Booty's passed him up.

Look at Jennings stats - yes, he had fewer receptions as a rookie and 2n year player - but his ypc was much larger - Favre has always been willing to chuck the ball up there for his receivers to run down

I would expect Barrian get 6 to 7 TD's longer than 40 yards with Favre - plus add 2 more short ones.

No Farve - perhaps 6tds, but not as many long ones

interesting, surprising, but good to know.

Not buying what Miller is selling. Vikings have not been practicing for several weeks so I wonder why it took so long for this information to leak out. It seems awfully convenient that Miller, who has been in Favre corner since day one, would come out with this info.  If the Vikings coaching staff have changed their depth chart on how well the QBs have looked in shorts then there is some good news on the horizon. Shanny apparently wants to coach in 2010. Vikings should have an opening.

I am staying far away from Bernard Berrian in 09. I think that his current ADP of WR28 and 73 is too high and he will disappoint. He finished as WR18 last year with only 95 targets so most think that he can build on that with more targets. The Vikings WR stable is the same as a year ago, except that they added rookie Percy Harvin. I think that his targets could actually decrease, with the added use of Harvin and the fact that Favre throws underneath more often later in his career than most anticipate. Favre averaged only 6.7 ypa in 08 on an average of 33 pass attempts per game. Minnesota on the other hand only attempted 28 passes per game, a decrease of 5 per game. I think that they still have their solid O Line and Mr. Peterson to run the ball.

Berrian also had a 20.1 ypc last season and there is no way that he approaches that level in 09. I know that Jackson took a lot of criticism, but he threw a fairly nice deep ball. Both he and Frerotte averaged above 7.1 ypa. 0.4 yards more than Favre.

Considering Berrian's last three seasons, he has had a maximum of 127 targets and that was in Chicago. His targets decreased from 07 to 08 with the move to Minnesota by 32, two per game.

Bernard Berrian 98 targets 50 catches 51% 775 yards 15.5 ypc and 5 TDs

 he nearly hit that last year with pathetic QBing. not that it will suddenly be amazing but I think sage gets the nod and although he throws lots of INTs is easily better than Jackson and along with teams eyeballing the explosive Hardy and emergence of the TE, he should top 1000 easy IMO. not an amazing year but a great #3 WR, even decent #2. predicting him to do worse other than ypc makes no sense.

As a Peterson owner, I saw a lot of vikings games last year. I remember numerous plays where Berrian would be wide open. Jackson would throw to him and miss him by a good five yards. Sage is a ginormous upgrade.

900-1200 yards

5-8 TD's

He lacks true #1 ability, but is one hell of deep-threat...

Ideal #3 in FF

Huge sleeper this year. Top fifteen for me.

1100 yards

9 TDs

He doesn't lack the ability...he's never had a good quarterback.
