Player Spotlight: Laveranues Coles (1 Viewer)

2009 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 120 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Laveranues Coles, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

Player Page Link: Laveranues Coles Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Laverneous Coles is a gamer. He has more skills than given credit for and he is reliable. His movement from the Jets to the Bengals was a profitable move for Coles and could also provide results for those that draft him in 09. I am lookiing for a nice season from Carson Palmer and Coles is one of three solid receiving options that will be targeted by Palmer. His current ADP of WR29 and 81 overall could drop some during the preseason practices if continued reports of Chris Henry's solid work continue, making Coles an even bigger bargain as I think that he will wind up as the Bengals #2 WR.

Laverneous Coles 120 targets 76 catches 63% 912 yards 7 TDs

Not feeling Coles this year. Thought he was on the quick downside coming to Cincy. Not crazy about an aging wR changing teams nor the fact he's not going to see much game action with Carson this preseason. There are 2 superior talents at WR already (Ocho/Henry) & I think he'll be one and done in Cincy if Caldwell shows he's capable of being the slot guy.

50 catches 600 yards 4 TD

I think those thinking he'll just take over Housh's #'s [someone who played many years with Carson] are in for a rude awakening.

While the change in venue is huge IMO, Coles being so injury-prone is a bigger concern for me. Still, I do think that he has some potential in CIN once he gets all the way into the routine and learns the CIN system. I don't think that 70 receptions, 750 yards and 6 TD's is a reach for him this season and may even have better numbers than that if he can stay healthy an entire season. Solid WR3 with potential to be a low-end WR2 if things develop well, and a decent option for leagues that have a flex position too given match-up's...

Edit to add receptions...

I was extremely high on Coles early in the summer. He has never had a QB in his prime like Carson palmer or the armt o deliver the ball. This guy has had to go up against #1 DBs his entire career and now will be looking at typically the 2nd and 3rd DBs when he takes the field. Not sure why everyone is so Henry crazy as he has been racking up yards and TDs against 2nd and 3rd string defenses...great Henry is the WR1 of 2nd string WRs in the league, no problem. But Coles has competed on a much bigger stage, bigger level, bigger everything than Henry. Coles is B_A_T_T_L_E T_E_S_T_E_D!!! Coles is going to hand in there and get that tough catch over the middle to move the sticks, Coles will do everything in his power to add to this teama dn you can't tell me that OchoCino lining up across from him isn't going to help.

I don't think he posts Housh like numbers but when you look at the fact Cinci will be playing behind a lot, there has to be room for Coles to make a splash. He also has posted 89/82/90/73/91/70 with one injury riddled season I left off...those are his catches 6 of the last 7 seasons and outside of an aging Favre last season tell me where he has solid QB play the entire way? In the pass happy world of Cinci I have hard time not being optimistic about him. I don't see a lot of TDs, those will go to Ocho and maybe some to Henry but Coles should be a PPR monster. Another 30+ aging vet that no one in here thinks is sexy...he belongs in the club with Derrick Mason, Donald Driver, Torry Holt, Muhsin Muhammed(top25 last year), Santana Moss(now 30), Hines Ward, all these guys can be had in the middle of the 6th, 7th, and 8th rounds and all of them offer value. They are all candidates to catch 80 balls, post 1,000 yds, and score 6-8 TDs.

Projections: 75 receptions, 850 yds, 6 TDs...a solid WR3 with some upside potential should Ocho become sidelined.

Coles will have the best QB he's ever had....

That should be the trigger....

If Palmer goes down, all the WR's are close to unplayable this year.

Isn't Henry getting all the looks in preseason because Coles hasn't played yet?
Coles played the last game. Don't know about the previous one.I think the Bengals having Coles is a luxury, not a necessity. Nice signing at the time, but Ocho looks back to elite form and Henry's looked terrific so far. I think we see Coles in the slot in due time and if the Bengals are out of the playoff picture at the end of the year, we'll see more Caldwell than Coles.

Coles has played every game in every season of his career except two.
Maybe so, but there always seems to be an issue that limits him. The Turf-Toe comes to mind. That said, and as MOP mentioned earlier, the guy is battle-tested and should post decent numbers in CIN. And if he stays at 100% or at least close to it, he has the potential to have a huge season.

Pardon me, but could you find an example of a player with the pedigree and stats of a Coles who was sat down once his team was out of the playoff picture so a guy like Caldwell could take the field the rest of the way? I'd really like to see a few of these. :excited:

I figured the Bengals get something/anything out of a player they'll owe some $9 million this year. I gave Coles a bit of the benefit of the doubt thinking he wasn't completely shot. Thought maybe it'd take til later in the year for Caldwell to surpass Coles, but it's obvious Coles is the 4th best WR on this team. Time to stop living in the past with him. The Bengals staff really really likes Caldwell [and that was abundantly obvious with his on the field time with the 1st unit this preseason]Coles is a Marty Booker/replaceable/3rd WR veteran talent now that's grossly overpaid for the year. I'm sure he'll pop up again on a team next year...at a dramatically reduced salary.

:lmao:
