Obviously this thread is not about the Steve Smith....Who to pick? Who is more likely to lose time to Nicks?
Well thought out. However, I am not quite as optimistic about Smith's totals at year end. I do see him getting 75 catches this year, but he'll probably total 750-900 yards receiving. Add in 4-5 TDs and he's a solid WR4 in non PPR. I do believe he's a pretty safe bet to meet those numbers. I'm just not so sure he's got the upside to really surpass them. Poor mans Houshmandzadeh may be right, except Palmer was >>> Eli.I posted this quite a ways back and still hold it to be true.............If you look at what I have bolded you can not go by those stats to soley get your answer. The reason is Steve Smith stayed in the slot last year all year. When they lost Burress they stuck with Toomer (flanker) and Smith (slot) in their same roles and brought Hixon (split end) into the Burress role. I am assuming this was what they felt was the least distruption for the offense and felt confident enought in the running game to carry them through. Manning's targets over the last 4 years have went from 557, 522, 529 and to only 479 last year. I think they will be around the same this up coming year as their running game is their strength. Now back to the WR situation. Smith is entrenched as the starter this year but instead of being limited to the slot role he is moving outside to play flanker and will get far more targets than last year. When the Giants line up in 3 wr sets Smith will move into the slot where he is easily Manning's favorite go to receiver for big catches to move the sticks. Smith does lack big play ability and is not your typical game changing type of WR but he is a poor man's Houshy. Smith should have an increased YPC (up from 10.1 last year) as his role won't be limited to all underneath stuff as it has been the last 2 years out of the slot. Hixon is going to be pushed all season by Nicks and he will have to perform to hang onto his starting role (if he hangs onto that starting role out of training camp). Smith on the other hand has already been named as the starter while Hixon fights it out with Nicks. Also Reese was asked about his WR situation and the first person he answered as to who is in a tier of very good WR's and he quickly responded Smith. I think many people are sleeping on Smith especially if you are playing in a PPR league. Smith had 57 catches last year out of the slot in a season where Manning only threw 479 balls. I think it is safe to say Eli really trusts Smith and will look to him a lot more this year as he will have an increased role. My guess is Smith is the guy to have this year and will catch 75 on the conservative end but would not surprise me to see him get even close to 85 or 90 balls with 1050-1250 yards with 6 TD's ish.
Well done. I actually believe Smith may be regarded as a Poor Man's Houshmadzadeh presently, but will be equal or better in ability within a year or two. He is as tough as Housh over the middle, but he has more speed than he's given credit and I believe he will surprise people this year with some of the big plays he makes 30-40-50 yards down field.I posted this quite a ways back and still hold it to be true.............If you look at what I have bolded you can not go by those stats to soley get your answer. Dont discount that Manningham might be better than both: S.Smith, Hixon.I haven't seen/heard the evidence that Manning loves S.Smith. I live in NJ, the heart of Giants Territory and read the local Rags everyday. I have no horse in the game, just stating that right now Hixon is the top Receiver on the team. Most of the beat writers seem to feel Hixon is the most complete receiver (ie blocking, route running, catching ect) BTW, what "facts and reasoning" are the Smith supporters posting that the Hixon supporters are not posting????So far we have 2 camps on this. One camp for Smith who use facts and reasoning to support thier position. The camp for Hixon? Because they said so.If any of you were Giant homers I might give your position on Hixon a little more consideration. But to my knowledge you guys are not. Would like to hear Avery or Yenrubs thoughts on this. Here is another tidbit for you guys. When the Giants were talking to Cleveland about trading for Edwards, Cleveland wanted Steve Smith. The Giants would give them Hixon or any of the other WR but not Smith. So who do you think the Giants value more?
You seem to have missed the point. The Giants think he is good and would not trade him.Well if the Browns think he's good...

Wouldn't trade him for Braylon, perhaps because then they would have all deep ball WRs and no possession guy (Smith).I do think it's a good point, just not "evidence" that he's the best Giants WR or anything. You seem to have missed the point. The Giants think he is good and would not trade him.Well if the Browns think he's good...

Facts: Hixon ran the number 1 position last year, is still running in that position. Beat writers say he is #1. Made more plays than Smith last year. Faster and more elusive than Smith. What other facts do you need.So far we have 2 camps on this. One camp for Smith who use facts and reasoning to support thier position. The camp for Hixon? I have Smith on my team.. but Im not playing him. I hope he does something in the regular season or he will be cut loose for the latest Waiver Wonder.Who to pick? Who is more likely to lose time to Nicks?
The foundation is cracking on Hixon as the reality sets in. According to coach Coughlin comments today, its a WR rotation to start in NY (Smith/Hixon/Manningham/Nicks) rather than the latter two as clear cut off the bench players. To clarify, typically a back up plays when an injury happens (ala Andre Davis in Houston) but its not that way in NY concerning Manningham and Nicks.ROTOWORLD: Source: Mike Garafolo on Twitter Coach Tom Coughlin indicated Friday that the Giants will employ a four-man receiver rotation in Week 1.The top four are Steve Smith, Domenik Hixon, Mario Manningham, and Hakeem Nicks, who earned a playing-time bump by closing the preseason on fire. It may be best to wait a week before starting any of the Giants' wideouts. Smith figures to play the most snaps, but is never a great bet for touchdowns. Hixon, Manningham, and Hicks appear to be in a tightening timeshare.Dont discount that Manningham might be better than both: S.Smith, Hixon.I haven't seen/heard the evidence that Manning loves S.Smith. Manningham has great potential, I just don't know if he is ready mentally to make it.The giants said Mannigham is #3 and Nicks is #4 at this point. Look for big plays from Hixon and shorter passes for Smith
Mentally he does suck yet he had no problems producing at Michigan. I put all my money squarely on Nicks and Manningham to be the near future outside WRs in NY with reliable S.Smith getting solid time in the slot and relieving either time to time. Smith didnt show enoguh second half of last year to keep Manningham and Nicks out. I predict that Hixon becomes the fourth WR once the learning curve complete for the other two starters.Manningham has great potential, I just don't know if he is ready mentally to make it.The giants said Mannigham is #3 and Nicks is #4 at this point. I like Nicks a lot, saw the film at NC. But also have seen and heard the reports about Manningham in camp from the defenders. Contrary to popular belief, think that Mannninghams upside is equal to Nicks. Both can get separation, Manninghams routes are very clean and he is very quick> Nicks is powerful and gets away as well.Manningham is abouut 1/10t the going price that Nicks is in dynasty leagues and can be picked up in roughly 90% of Yahoo leagues with large enough benches.I think Nicks is clearly the best talent of the bunch, so he would be my target here. It's only a matter of time until he's the top WR on this team. I'm willing to gamble that it will happen sometime this season due to the general ineptitude of the other options on the roster.
Maybe so. I've never been a fan of Mario's game, although he intrigues me more than Hixon.I think Hixon is massively overrated on these boards. IMO he's this year's DJ Hackett. Lots of hype. Little substance.I like Nicks a lot, saw the film at NC. But also have seen and heard the reports about Manningham in camp from the defenders. Nobody seems to think Steve Smith is overrated, I liked the stories about him after he arrived in NY rookie year, but he (like Sinorice Moss) also hasn't lived up to the positive chatter in either of his first two years, and if he had, i doubt they would have drafted Manningham and then Hackim Nicks in following two years. Giants starters have been overrated because Coughlin almost always favors veterans, it doesnt make them the best for the job. The reason they were getting killed on defense at linebacker back in 2004/2005 --undertalented vets.Maybe so. http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2009/09...to_be_part.htmlNot sure where they got that Hixons role is decliningIs it safe to assume Hixon is dropable from your rosters now. Seems he's headed down the depth chart.
Rotoworld:
Domenik Hixon is expected to remain the Giants' punt returner.
Hixon's offensive role is declining, but he'll stay fresh for punts. With his upside diminishing, Hixon is no longer an intriguing end-game roster stash.

Nobody thinks Smith is overrated because most are over looking him. People are down on his up side but he actually has a lot of upside, especially in PPR leagues. To many people are limiting Smith to being "just the slot" guy. But Smith has a really good chance to solitify himself into an all around WR this year and beyone. He is starting a top the depth chart and I think he is easily the best bet to lead this team in targets this year. I have been following this Giants recieving situation extremely closely for sometime now and everything is pointing in this direction.Nobody seems to think Steve Smith is overrated, I liked the stories about him after he arrived in NY rookie year, but he (like Sinorice Moss) also hasn't lived up to the positive chatter in either of his first two years, and if he had, i doubt they would have drafted Manningham and then Hackim Nicks in following two years. The Giants did not want to part with Hixon, this is not true.As a Giant homer who watches every Giant game a few times, I think Hixon is better than people think. He caught everything last year EXCEPT a HUGE drop in the Philly game. That one huge drop made a lot of people think he sucked. So far we have 2 camps on this.
One camp for Smith who use facts and reasoning to support thier position.
The camp for Hixon? Because they said so.
If any of you were Giant homers I might give your position on Hixon a little more consideration.
Can you elaborate on this please?Hixon is the better player as Smith struggles when he is not facing the QB. Smith is better as a slot guy and very good facing the QB. the Giants best lineup is to have Nicks and Hixon on the outside and Smith in the slot. Manningham is listed as the 3rd WR, but I think he is the #4 until he proves more reliable
Then what about this? The Giants did not want to part with Hixon, this is not true.So far we have 2 camps on this.

http://www.giantsgab.com/2009/03/22/report...raylon-edwards/Of course this is all unsubstaintiated rumor. There have been plenty of rumblings the Giants had talked with the Browns about a trade for their top wide receiver, Braylon Edwards. Those rumors had revolved around the Giants’ sending defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka to Cleveland. I had heard nothing to substantiate the rumors, so I didn’t mention them here.
But Ken Palmer of The Giant Insider reported today that, while the Giants never dangled Kiwanuka, they did inquire about Edwards.
To read the full story, you need a Scout.com subscription, but I’ve seen the full report and I’ll tell you what Palmer’s reporting:
The Giants offered the Browns the two draft picks they received from the Saints last year in exchange for TE Jeremy Shockey: a second-round pick and a fifth-rounder.
The Browns countered by asking for WR Steve Smith. The Giants said no.
The Giants then offered either of two other WRs: Domenik Hixon or Mario Manningham. The Browns said no.
The talks died down after that last exchange, though they could pick up at draft time.
