This Chris Brown Experiment is Working Great So Far...Yeah Right! (1 Viewer)

Kubiak is an idiot......He is trusting a career pedestrian RB to come through with game-winning goal line plays and it has backfired 2 weeks, costing his team 2 possible victories each time. For a guy not to even give his starting RB an opportunity at least some of the time to make a play at the goal line is just plain stupidity on his part. I'll be glad when Bob McNair cancels his ticket this season.......

Yep!....I am a p'd off Slaton owner.

Taking away the rant being by a Slaton owner, he is right. Kubiak insisting on using a deadbeat like Chris Brown at the goal line has now cost them the chance to tie two games late in the 4th quarter (and they lost both games by 7).

I understand complaining about using Chris Brown at the goal line.

But it is wrong to suggest he should have used Slaton instead. Slaton has been absolutely terrible at the goal line thus far in his career: 20 carries for 10 rushing yards and 4 TDs.

I was kind of hoping Schaub would pass for a TD myself... especially if it went to Daniels.

Good posting. You want to complain about giving it to Brown, that's great. If you want to suggest that they should instead give it to a guy averaging 3 yards per carry, leading the NFL in fumbles, and with a long history of terrible short-yardage production, then I'm no longer with you.If it were me, I'd spread it and use Matt Schaub as my goal-line runner.

Slaton had failed on several short yardage attempts earlier in the game, and Brown had converted on his.Even getting stuffed at the end, he still outperformed Slaton for the game. Not that that's saying much, because Slaton is one of the worst short-yardage RBs we've seen lately and to suggest that HE should have gotten the ball there is absurd.Brown is not a great short yardage option. But he's the best they have in that spot, and certainly a lot better than Slaton.Besides, did you see where the new LoS was established on that play? The ball was on the one inch line and the center ended up on the 3 yard line. Walter Payton wouldn't have scored there.

Brown and Slaton both suck at the goal line ... Then give Slaton the benifit of the doubt. He is only 1 season removed from a great season ... That's more than u can say for Brown

FWIW, from earlier in the game...

2-1-ARI22 (12:20) S.Slaton up the middle to ARZ 22 for no gain (C.Haggans).

3-1-ARI22 (11:41) S.Slaton right tackle to ARZ 22 for no gain (K.Dansby).

3-1-ARI1 (3:43) C.Brown up the middle for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.

The bottom line is not about Brown or Slaton. The Houston O line can't move a pile of beans in short yardage. ANY play call between the tackles in short yardage for Houston is a lousy play call.

If Houston wants to score inside the five, they should have gone back to the play that Schaub made the lousy throw on the previous down. Or a corner fade. Anything but a run up the gut, don't care if it's Brown OR Slaton.

I totally agree with the poster here- K ubiak is simply on an ego trip with this issue and is trying to treat Slaton like Nick Saban treats a freshman running back. Slaton got them to the 1- give him the d**m ball!

In addition the Houston run blocking-part. interior is atrocious. Lets get a highlight real of how many times he is hit in the backfield- you would be suprised.

if you are going to lose with Chris Brown...why not sign TJ Duckett??

he had good numbers in short yardage last year.

Why do they never try throwing fades to AJ? Arizona used to have a good amount of success with this when they had the same goaline running woes.

With the game on the line there should be no other option than Schaub to Johnson.

I'm a firm believer that you give your best players the chance to win the game in that situation.

On this team those players are Schaub, Johnson, and Daniels. With Daniels being a distant 2nd option to Johnson.

To give any other player the ball in this situation is simply over thinking.

Slaton is too frail for goal line duty but Moats would have punched it in!!

I think you're just mad at how Schaub missed that wide open pass on the play before Brown couldn't punch it in.

I concur with this 100%.The Texans got that first down inside the five and was thinking to myself "Okay, they're in the driver's seat...you have four shots for Schaub to get it to Johnson or Daniels here, with some time left, so there's no need to be cute or rush things Call your 4 best plays, if four are necessary, and let the chips fall. Probably pretty good odds."And then Kubiak calls Chris Brown's number 2 out of the 4 times, inlcuding on 4th down, while Schaub/Johnson/Daniels basically get to stand around and watch the play. Doesn't make one shred of sense. You wanna try running it down there once, hoping they aren't paying attention, then fine. I get the logic(don't agree with it, given their running woes, but I get it). They had the time and timeouts, IIRC. After Brown gets the door slammed on him immediately on 2nd down though, why try it again two plays later?

Get your resume ready kubiak. 1st half suckage galore in playcalling. 1/2 of crap plays and it cost them.

In Slaton's "great season" last year he was terrible during short yardage. So you've got a guy who sucks at short yardage even when he's playing well, and now he's playing terribly. Tell me again why they should default to him in short yardage situations?

Really? Schaub is what killed them, missing his one opportunity? Not two rushing attempts failing to garner a yard?

Actually what killed them was their inability to do anything on defense in the 1st half. On the last series, Schaub had Dreesen wide open in the back of the end zone and threw it over him. I thought they should have run it again on 3rd, not try misdirection. Houston has been horrendous in short yardage both last year and this year. When you get that open of a look in the end zone, you have to hit it. He did not.

Slaton isn't any better. So let's not act like he is. So putting the whole tiresome 'Superstar Stevie' schtick aside.

Would have went with a sneak or a Schaub pass. Afterall, it was the pass game being the only reason they were in the game.

Schaub blew the 3rd down TD throw. Guy was so wide open that Schaub got cute with it.

There ya go. I'm on board with the defense killing them. I'm on board with the short yardage running game killing them. You lose me though when you proclaim Schaub missing one wide open pass as the dagger.

Actually Dreesen was so wide open, that Schaub did completely blow that pass. Houston has not been able to run block in over two years, so that is not new. Schaub air mailing a wide open TE in the back of the end zone is new.

As a fellow Houston fan, I disagree. Sure he should've completed the pass because Dressen was wide open in the end zone, but I'm sick and tired of having to rely on that bootleg play to the TE when you're one measly yard from scoring. Winning football teams can line up and push the other guys back ONE YARD when needed. I would've preferred a running play (or a quick snap sneak) on third down and another running play on fourth down. The interior line play is abominable in the run game.

Most importantly, *NOBODY* is running through the middle unless Houston clears some of the defenders out, and since the offensive line is incapable of doing it, the only real hope is spreading the field and forcing the other team to take its defenders out of the box willingly.

How did all plays look?

Having only see what was replayed to me from SS, one has to think that Kubiak and OC need to have some better plays in the mix instead of 'ram it down their throat'. I mean, if your gonna run the eye into the serpents mouth, at least bring in a OL like everyone else in the league is doing. Serisouly, Mike Vrabel has made a living in these situations.

He also is not very durable, though... I'd use Schaub for what he does best... throwing the ball.

You, I, and everyone including Schaub knows the inerior line is inferior at run blocking. Based on that he HAS to hit the wide open TE. He knows this. It is on his shoulders. He missed. Yes the Texans should be able to run block better, but they don't.

LMAO! So not only is it Schaub's fault he missed the wide open receiver, it's his fault they can't run up the middle.

No you did not say that at all. Wanky boy has a reading comprehension problem.

And the point being made that Slaton is far more talented a player than Brown and had taken steps this offseason by adding bulk in an attempt to increase his power and improve in short yardages situations, yet his HC continues to ignore him once they get at the goal line doesn't mean a thing, I guess?.......Regardless of past failures, I still hold strong to the belief that you give your best guys opportunities to score, thus helping your team out towards winning some games.

I recall for a couple of seasons where the Eagles were towards the bottom in converting short yardage and goal line situations, but did they more often than not kept Westbrook in their and he received his fair share of attempts. Why? Because Andy Reid knows the value of keeping your best playmakers on the field most of the time, including short yardage. It's up to the coaches to call the right plays and put their players in positions to succeed. As Kubiak should know his o-line is soft, so then open up the playbook down at the goal line and stop trying to force Boo-Boo Brown up the gut behind such a putrid o-line. Run off-tackle, run misdirection (those misdirected little flip tosses to the RB work quite well when setup well), bootlegs, hell, run a power sweep sometime, because obviously the Texans o-line can't simply beat teams straight on with power blocking. And since this is the case, then yes, I believe that Slaton should be the one getting the rock then as I see him in the mold of a Westbrook. Do you know how many times that Westbrook has scored on those little shovel passes down inside the 10 yard line? A lot!

Slaton produced over 15 points in PPR leagues, so this is far from a simple vent thread. It's a reality check thread. Kubiak is a stubborn fool who is failing to make proper adjustments and not helping his team much in these tight games. He also doesn't seem to know how to inspire/motivate players while he has very few options he should be looking to build up a guy like Slaton. Instead, he makes public comments trying to place blame on a young player when he should be looking directly in the mirror at what he has failed to do as a coach - develop a good o-line and call better plays based on his team's strengths, i.e., adjust). This equates to a lack of leadership. How come he hasn't been able to develop Jacoby Jones? Isn't Kubiak supposedly an offensive wizard? Jones is another talented playmaker who could be helping this team more if properly developed and utilized. I just can't imagine most coaches relying on Chris Brown to try to win you games when you see it isn't working. Did he even give Slaton an attempt at the goal line on either of their goal line situations?

Why would he? Slaton has already had plenty of chances at the goal line in his career and proved he's completely inadequate at it. How many chances does he need if he hasn't been able to get it done on the first THIRTY? Brown has done solidly in short yardage situations this year, certainly better than Slaton has in his career. You're not making any sense.
