We're already off to a bad start considering all the coaches with the exception of Van Slyke are coming back. That means Lloyd McClendon is back. :lmao:

Firing Lloyd would have been a positive step in the right direction much like the Hernandez firing was for us last year.

I want to admit that this thread is all about me me me, and I am being as narcissistic as I could possibly be.

Signed through 2010
Pitchers 2010 salary
Jeremy Bonderman $12,500,000
Nate Robertson $10,000,000
Dontrelle Willis (DL) $12,000,000

If they can get just one of these moneyburners to come thru they would at least have a 4th starter.
If you need a yard, I'll get you three. If you need five yards, I'll get you three.

I think we've been asking this same question for these three guys for two years now. Galarraga is more reliable than any of them at this point IMO.

Haven't the recent articles basically said the Tigers are cash strapped this offseason and not likely to sign much?

I suspect the Tigers may focus on trades and not FA.

Also - I REALLY hope they sign Lyon before Rodney. Let Rodney walk.

I'm a big fan of Polanco, but he is NOT the best all-around player on the team. Not close.

I disagree, but I'll concede that it's a very arguable point. But I really think that 2010 should be the year where the Tigers find out what they really have in these young guys. I'd be okay with keeping Polanco on the cheap, but would much, much rather offer him arbitration and have him decline, hoping for the two early picks.I'm really not hoping for more than a 3rd place finish next year, though in this division a run at the title isn't out of the question.

Cool graph of the Tigers regulars' wOBA pulled from the fireleyland blog.

Note that this is just offensive production, and it's a per plate appearance number (league average is 0.325).

I'm surprised that Thames shows up as above league average. I thought he was a disaster this year.

This graph also reinforces my desire to see if Avila and Raburn can do what they did this year for 300-400 ABs.

Interesting.

The problem with Avila and Raburn getting more at bats is what you give up in defense. Although I am of the mindset that if Raburn is playing just one position in 2010 (whether its OF or 2B) then he'll likely be much better off. Avila, we'll see. Laird is an outstanding defensive catcher so I'm not sure I'd want to see Avila get 400 ABs but 250 would probably be ok if he was hitting well.

The articles today about Guillen were absurd. They all tried to make it seem like Guillen is disgruntled, unhappy, etc.

If you actually read the quotes, he said he didn't want to cause any trouble, he just wants to be an everyday player and no his position. Seems pretty reasonable.

It will be interesting to see what they do with OF/2b/DH with Guillen, Raburn, Sizemore, Maggs and Clete. I'm assuming Thames and Polanco are gone.

Sounds like Inge two years ago....Saw some speculation on another message board that maybe the Tigers will hire Jaramillo as hitting coach and then keep Lloyd on staff as first base coach. That would be nice but it makes too much sense for the Tigers to do that.

Five Moves the Tigers need to make:

1. Sign Verlander and Jackson to long term deals NOW. They could be the best one/two starting pitching punch in the future. Lock em up now, you not going to sign them for any cheaper dollars in the future.

2. Resign Rodney and Lyon, relief pitching is always hard to come by, and Rodney had 37 saves? ink them now. High risk, but high rewards move.

3. Move Granderson out of the lead off spot. Hear me out on this one. He hit 249 with a 327 on base %, but 30 home runs :nerd: would be better served in a lower spot. Tigers need to find/trade for a D. Span type lead off hitter that can hit 300.

4. Out wit the Twins and sign free agent Cabrera SS from the Twins, this would be a big upgrade at SS

5. Sign a free agent corner outfielder who can hit 25 homeruns and put him in the batting lineup in front of that Caberra guy.

Future looks good for the Tigers, but above moves would make the future that much more brighter.

1. Tigers have a history of giving too big of contracts on too small a sample size. Sign Verlander, but make Jackson show us that first half performance again before giving him the long-term deal.2. They can only afford one of them at best. Plus, if Perry is the closer in waiting, they need to give him the 8th inning this next year, if not the job outright.3. Completely agree. Though a trade for someone like Span is probably not happening. That guy is good.4. Would love that. Even though Cabrera is not top-flight, he's a definite upgrade since they don't have anyone in the pipeline ready to play.5. Dare I say, Ryan Raburn?

Beck: Marcus Thames, Matt Treanor off Tigers' rosterBy Scott WarheitNovember 06, 2009, 4:21PMThe Marcus Thames era in Detroit is over. According to Jason Beck, the Tigers have removed both Thames and catcher Matt Treanor from the roster.Thames was always a favorite in the Tigers' clubhouse, and while it was becoming apparent the Tigers would not have room for him on their 2010, the parting is bittersweet. While Thames struggled in limited playing time last season, he did have seasons of 26 (2006) and 25 (2008) home runs and was always a fan-favorite.Matt Treanor never got going in Detroit, as a spring training injury never allowed him to make an impact as Detroit's backup catcher. His release makes it more likely that Alex Avila will remain with the big league club as Gerald Laird's full-time backup in 2010. The Tigers, though, may still pursue a veteran during the off-season, which would allow Avila to get regular playing time (and, most importantly, daily at-bats) for AAA Toledo.

Report: Tigers open to trading All-Star outfielder Curtis Granderson

By James Schmehl | MLive.com
November 11, 2009, 3:38PM

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski is apparently making it known that no Tigers player is untouchable -- even if that player is the face of their franchise.

According to the New York Post, Detroit has informed teams that All-Star outfielder Curtis Granderson is available on the trading block, according to an NL executive.

The Posts’ Joel Sherman said the Yankees are at the “near top of the list” to acquire the 28-year-old and the Tigers would likely require Yankees highly touted center field prospect Austin Jackson to be the centerpiece in return.

Granderson is owed $25.75 million over the next three seasons, with a $13 million club option for 2013 -- and he is expected to draw plenty of interest from other clubs.

The rumor involving the left-handed slugger comes a day after the Tigers reportedly put Edwin Jackson on the market in an effort to trim payroll next season.

Dombrowski met with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman in the final day of the general managers’ three-day meetings, but “it is not believed the two did any more than discuss needs and available players,” the report stated.

Of course, knowing Dombrowski, he'll trade him for Vlad Guerrero and immediately sign Vlad to a 5 year extension.

Thus bad begins and worse remains behind

This Granderson trade talk is ridiculous.

Polanco is returning to Phily to play 3rd base. Not your traditional 3rd baseman.

I am happy the Tigers didn't pay him 3yrs/$18mm.

Doing stuff is overrated. Like Hitler. He did a lot. But don't we all wish he would have just stayed at home and gotten stoned?

I am not. A very sad day in Tigertown. I will miss his cranium.

Yeah so am I. Big fan of Polanco and I hope he does great in Philly, but in this case I thought from the beginning the Tigers and Polanco needed to go separate ways.

:D There are certain instances where it is smart to let a good player walk. This is one of them. The contract is not good and we have a young player waiting in the wings who the team is pretty high on. I am a huge Polanco fan too.

I just hope the new kid can hit & stay healthy. Pauly was one of the few true hitters on this team.

I completely agree. But with the speed and amount of money the Phils paid to pick him up, it makes me wonder if the Tigers wouldn't have been better off by offering him arbitration. It doesn't sound to me like the Phils would have sweated giving up their first rounder to get him.

Oh good Lord. Jason Beck is reporting the Tigers are interested in Bobby Crosby. Oh please no!

I can't remember where I read it, but apparently the Phillies are interested in signing Lyon as well.

I want to admit that this thread is all about me me me, and I am being as narcissistic as I could possibly be.

It's timschochet, this is just what he does. He thinks his opinion is more important than others (though he would never admit this) so instead of continuing the conversation in the other thread he starts his own.
