This is where the draft starts to open up for me.

I could see myself going any number of directions here. The elite RBs are gone, so I would probably look at the other positions.

A lot of people seem to like Benn. I don't know if I share their enthusiasm. He only had 490 receiving yards this past season and has always been more hype than results. My stance might change in the next few months, but right now I favor Gilyard and Williams over him for the WR3 spot.

That said, I would probably play it safe and take Sam Bradford. I'm not really a fan of using high rookie picks on QBs, but he and Clausen are the only guys left on the board who are locks to be first round NFL picks. I think Bradford looks like the better pure passer and I like the prospect of him teaming up with Shanahan if it comes to fruition.

Damian Williams. His receiving skills are excellent, and he has good size, speed, separation, and elusiveness. He sometimes gets held up at the line of scrimmage, but he has the bulk to improve on that. I consider him clearly the second-best WR in the draft.

Don't understand all of the hype for Benn.

He is nothing better than Kerry Meier, Lance Leggett, and the other, similar wide-out's. Not polished with his route-running or his intelligence. I want to see him try to break a jam against a good cornerback too.

The NFL is a horizontal, sidelines-to-sidelines league, that is why guys like Welker, Bess, Lance Moore, Steve Smith are successful. While their is room for big play wide receivers, a la DeSean Jackson, I would rather take someone who has hands like Benn but is more polished at route running, can prove to be a consistent receiver regardless of the circumstances.

As EBF said, the draft really opens up here. I actually think that guys like Golden Tate and Desmond Briscoe should be in here next to the Gilyards' and Williams' as I've seen them both ranked as the #2 WR in this class.

There's a HUGE ? mark concerning his lack of production. Was it because of his QB, his shoulder injury or was it Benn. Which of these had cause the drop in his production??? We don't know right now but we'll know soon enough. Right now I have Bryant, Tate, Williams, LaFell and Gilyard ahead of him but that doesn't mean that he can't/won't move up.

I think the draft will (well should) open at pick six. Thomas is not as highly regarded in the broad draftspert community as he is here. Plenty of time for things to change, but he is mix with 6 or 7 other guys for the spot behind Bryant.

I'm with EBF too. Bradford is a safe pick. Much depends on where QB's land in the NFL draft, but if Bradford's shoulder is OK... he's better than Claussen, who might not have the hat size for the NFL.

I would like to hear some opinions on the next tier of receivers. Seems like Bryant is the consenus #1 and this site seems to love Thomas but after them it gets cloudy. Benn, Gilyard, Williams, Tate and LaFell all similiar valued receivers. Benn has the most up and down reviews, either hate or love him. I see some Miles Austin in him. Big, strong frames that use their speed to get open. Not big/rebounding leapers you would expect but have very strong hands when they catch the ball. Gilyard, I absolutey love. Only question mark for me is his ability to beat press coverage. I'm not a fan of Tate, he body catches far to much for my liking. Reminds me of Craig "Buster" Davis a few years back that went in round 1.

I haven't seen the other two enough to give any decent feedback. I would like to hear others on this second tier of WR's.

I think it really depends on how they work out. As I've said before, I really think Gilyard needs to run a sub 4.5 time (ideally a low 4.4 or better). He's pretty thin and teams will be worried about his lack of speed if he doesn't time fast. I think he's probably the best football player of the remaining WRs, but his upside is pretty low and he'll probably never be more than a WR2 in the NFL. I don't get the Benn love. Putting the statistics aside, he isn't that impressive on the field. Even last year when he had good stats he looked like a tentative, sluggish runner. People still talk about him as a potential first round pick though. I wonder if NFL teams are really that high on him or if he'll slip deep into the 2nd round. My hunch is the latter. We'll see. He could move up with a strong postseason because he looks like an All-Pro in shorts and if he does end up being a high pick, I'll have to consider moving him up in my rankings. I think Tate is the most overrated of the bunch. I often see him ranked as the 2nd best WR in the draft, even by some pretty reputable sites. I just don't see it. He's short and he looks slow. I've seen his 40 time listed as mid 4.4. I'll be surprised if he actually runs that fast because he doesn't look very speedy on the field. I think he's the second coming of Josh Reed: a college superstar who lacks the burst needed to translate his game to the next level. Of course, who knows how he'll run in workouts? If he really does run a low 4.4 or better then I'll have to reconsider.LaFell looks like he projects to be a pretty boring possession WR2 in the NFL. Tall. Decent quicks. Good hands. Kind of a slightly better Michael Jenkins. I really don't see the special qualities needed to become a #1, but he's not terrible. Williams is one of the more intriguing candidates. I've always felt he had kind of a strange running stride, but he's explosive in a straight line, he has a pretty big frame, and he's a natural receiver who can make difficult catches. I see some similarities to Jeremy Maclin. I think he has a chance to be a pretty decent pro.

Nothing to add to what EBF has posted, except that Thomas is a physical speciman at WR who may not be a good route runner nor has the pure speed that some think. A Vincent Jackson type who might take the same amount of time to become good as Jackson did. I like a couple of players more than he does, (tate/Williams), but not enough more to go back and forth on them. Overall, I think WR has bunches of bodies that are "in the eye of the beholder" types.

What are the thoughts on D Alexander? Is he in the discussion here?
He could wind up in the discussion, but he is going to have to check out medically and prove that he is more than a one year wonder. I think he is on the tier with D. Briscoe and Mike williams where they could just turn it on in the off-season or be the type that a team likes enough to draft ahead of a few of those guys earlier in the thread. My guess now is that Bryant will go in the first with one or two others and at some point in the 2nd and/or 3rd round will have like a run of 8-12 guys in like 25 or so picks.

I don't think so. He's a long strider with poor lateral movement and quickness. I think he'll really struggle to separate in the NFL.
