Filed to ESPN: Former Steelers WR Antwaan Randle El is returning to Pittsburgh, agreeing to a three-year deal with the team tonight.

Can he still play QB?

Edit to add actual commentary: I was thinking about this as a possibility when he was cut by the Skins who, in my opinion, never took advantage of his skill set. I don't think it's the Steelers MO to sign older FAs, but the Steelers like to run gadget plays here and there and with Randel-El could be a solid, occasional wildcat option.

He makes a ton of sense in PIT as the last WR on the roster. He can help on special teams, be a veteran presence, and do the occasional gadgetry. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume PIT signed him to a VERY reasonable 3-year deal that pales in comparison to the money Washington mistakenly gave him to be a full-time starting wideout.

I hated to see him leave as a FA to Wash, but I knew he wasn't worth the money they were throwing at him then.

Still one of my favorite players, great to see him head home for the twilight of his career.

Good signing for the Steelers, but it further muddies the waters for fantasy owners in terms of the Steeler's receivers. Not that Randle El will significantly cut into Holmes' or Ward's numbers, but you're already looking at the fact that Roethlisberger set his career high for passing yards by more than 800 yards, and now you have not just Wallace, who will be due for a slightly bigger share, and Heath Miller, who's coming off his best year ever, but also Randle El, who will see some touches. Again, makes a ton of sense for the Steelers and I'm not suggesting that Randle El alone will take a lot away from Ward and Holmes, but, in general, their receiving stats are a bit hard to project.

How much does Ward have left in the tank?

Good question. I keep waiting for the decline, and it seemed like it was coming in 2007, but he bounced back in 2008 and put up one of his best seasons ever last year. The guy doesn't show any signs of letting up. I don't think he'll catch 95 passes again, but he'll be a major factor.

"As soon as everything hit the gan, they were one of the first teams to be in contact with me," Randle El said. "They told me, 'We know you've got a lot of ball left and we want to bring you in here.' "

Randle El likely will be the Steelers' No. 3 receiver, behind Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes. He said they did not talk to him yet about returning punts.
John KeimI have a hard time picturing him beating out Mike Wallace for the WR3 spot.

I'd expect Randel-El to be used in special packages and WR3 in some packages and Wallace to be WR3 in other packages.NFL offenses and depth charts are becoming less traditional and we should adjust our thinking about depth charts accordingly.

does this mean the end of Stefan Logan?
I sure hope not. He really started looking more and more comfortable returning kicks as the season progressed.
:goodposting: I really never like Randle El returning punts. Yes he would break 1-2 a season, but he just danced around the other returns. Give me a sure handed guy who just takes the ball straight up the field and gets what he can each return.

why does no one else think that this means trouble for hines ward?
hines's speed is almost all gone. all he does is find the hole in the zone and sit down and ben hits him. and he doesnt drop anything, ever. pretty sure he can keep doing that.

lol.........this is a funny post. I take it you don't follow the Steelers much or something...Ward is God in Pittsburgh. Randy Moss would be riding the pine if the last starting spot was between him and Ward. Randle El will be there for his attitude and veteran leadership. Mike Wallace will be #3 and don't be surprised if there are whispers of him overtaking Holmes by mid-year in 2010. I think he has the talent.

I think it means a helluva lot more trouble for Sweed than Ward...
Yeah, Sweed's time with the Steelers is finished.
:goodposting: With Holmes, Ward, Wallace, Randle El and Battle I think the writing is on the wall for Sweed. It is too bad because we all had high hopes when he was drafted. Certainly one of the biggest draft busts in recent Steeler history.

We have a stellar group of receivers now. Our offense was good last year but will be even better this year. We need to pick up a good RB to compliment Mendenhall and hopefully get a good OL in the draft and we are set. Im happy Clark is back also, now we need a CB.

I think you both are jumping to conclusions here. Could Sweed be gone? Certainly, but I think this is something the Steelers have done to motivate him to step up some, and if he cant do it this year in camp and preseason, then he probably never will. Not saying I expect him to make the team, but him making the team over Battle - esp since they have El too - wouldnt exactly be surprising. Keeping 6 WRs isnt crazy either considering he's a 2nd rounder entering his 3rd year

Don't understand the hoopla.. I don't think Randle El makes the final roster. Before anybody speculates who's job is on the line.. the steelers have a pretty good WR corps.

Ward

Holmes

Wallace

Sweed

Randle El?

Logan is the better return man at this juncture and the only person I see having a problem making the roster is Sweed that's with or without Randle El nipping at his heels. My vote is for him being released before the season kicks off.

Possibly but I really doubt it. Randle El isn't an elite receiver but he is better and more versatile than Battle, Sweed or Tyler Grisham. I think he easily makes the team as the #4 WR.From what I understand Sweed hasn't been seen around the Steelers training facility since he was put on IR. I guess we'll know more when mini-camp starts.

You knew this one was coming. A day after the Steelers signed both Arnaz Battle and Antwan Randel El, the days of Limas Sweed were nearing an end.

Although there is no official word out of the UPMC training complex, a league source confirmed rumors that Sweed has indeed asked Steeler officials to be released or traded by the team.

What could you possibly get for him? He'll be released outright...

Isn't that like being convicted for murder and then "asking" the judge for jail time?

Teams don't sign players to 3 year deals only to cut them a few months later. Sorry dude, Randle El is going to make the 53. And yes, this ultimately spells doom for Limas Sweed more than anybody. Apparently he visited the Steelers offices yesterday asking for a trade or release. And also to note, Stefan Logan is going nowhere. His role only increased as the season went along last year, as well as the level he played at. The Steelers had terrible special teams units last season and Logan was one of the best returners in the league while practically doing it all on his own. It's not like this guy was running up wide open lanes in the middle of the field... all of his big run backs came from him making a couple of guys miss on his own and turning the corner. He's got a spot on this team going forward.

They still have a terrible ST unit AFA the coverage goes.

We need to be signing ST coverage specialists, not WR's by the truckload
