Faust

MVP
1.01 St. Louis Rams select QB Sam Bradford (83% of the vote)

Detroit Lions

Positions of need (as per NFL.com)

DL, RB, S, OL, LB

Needs Analysis: The Lions proved that money talks when they opened up free agency by signing Kyle Vanden Bosch and Nate Burleson. There are several other new faces on the roster, but work remains. Coach Jim Schwartz told me weeks ago that they need everything but a starting QB and a wide receiver. Running back will be a draft priority, given the late-season knee injury to Kevin Smith last year. The addition of Corey Williams should not preclude Detroit from drafting a big defensive tackle like Ndamukong Suh. There is speculation the Lions will pass on the dominant defensive tackle early and go left tackle. I'd rather see them continue to build the defense.

I actually like Okung enough, but this shouldn't be close.

Since the question is who WILL the Lions select, not who SHOULD they pick, I voted Okung because they have a huge investment they need to protect and will protect him by twofold with this pick by making a lesser OT a better OG as well.

My theory is that Suh would make the defense better by enough that the offense wouldn't have to be passing 80% + after 1.5 quarters of football thereby limiting how much pass rush the opponents would be throwing at that big investment on 1/2 as many plays. The reason the Lions won't see it this way IMO, is that DL take a redshirt year for the most part. OL can usually come in and be effective year 1 and be pretty good by year 2. DL seem to be about a year behind OL on the development curve and Detroit won't want to expose Stafford for another year just to get the better player.

Two horse race at the moment...closer then expected!

I keep hearing that this is a deep draft for OL, maybe the Lions could have their cake and eat it too by taking a DT in the first and provide Stafford with some protection later in the draft?

trade most likely...have to, well then McCoy because he can probably be moved around more than Suh like Haynesworth and Vandenbosch have done under Schwartz.

Schwartz does not come from teams that spend too many high draft picks on OTs.

i find it hard to believe these are Lion fans wanting Okung over Suh. Whether your a Stafford owner or not that will never happen. Backus is actually suitable there as the real weak spot was at the Guard positions.

+1Stafford is to much of a investment to not go with the Okung. I think the Lions watched their future flash before their eyes last season and that should make them want to go OT. I could see the Lions trying very hard to move out of this pick.
The Lions passed on some OT's last year, including Oher, to draft Pettigrew. I think it's pretty clear that the new regime is just interested in getting great players, which isn't to say that Okung can't be a great player, but Suh is simply a much better prospect. Not to mention, Backus is a pretty decent LT.Suh here, and I don't think it's close.

Backus will be the Left Guard after the Lions draft Okung.

Okung would be a minor upgrade at LT, but moving Backus inside would be a GIANT upgrade at LG improving two positions at once and is a short-sighted move to protect Stafford. It remains to be seen if this front office knows what they're doing, but I like what they did last year and I like what they're doing so far this year. I should have voted Suh and given them the benefit of the doubt. I like Suh myself, because I think it does help protect Stafford in a more roundabout way. If, by improving the defense and the other 10 players on it (more 1 on 1 for DEs, less coverage time for CBs and more freedom to flow for LBs), you will also be getting more short fields for the offense, fewer points to try and make up and a chance to be a more balanced offense. Stafford will have to throw for a lower percentage of plays, subduing the pass rush. He won't feel the need to push the ball downfield as often, exposing himself for less time in the pocket. I think Suh provides much more for this team than Okung could and is the better player anyways which (IMO) is the best way to draft this early into the picks.

With the second selection of the 2010 FBG Consenus draft, the Detroit Lions select DT Ndamukong Suh
