2010 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Kenny Britt, WR, Tennessee Titans

Player Page Link: Kenny Britt Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or :goodposting: ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Britt showed some flashes during his rookie year, despite only recording six catches in the last four games of the season. The Titans air attack concerns me, but I think Britt has emerged as their best receiving threat.

Recs: 60

Kenny Britt showed he could play this game at WR in the middle of last season. However, the Titans passing offense isn't great and he did show poor judgment in the offseason when he was arrested. I think a lot of fantasy owners will be hoping that he takes another step forward and I'm not entirely sold that he will, even with the flashes of talent we saw last year.

52 catches for 725 yards, 5td's

Kenny Britt posted a strong rookie season, even while playing in a predominant running offense that featured the best RB from 09 and having two QBs that could not have been more different. I think that we need to break down the season into three segments, with Collins, transition, and with Young.

Kenny Britt - first six games (Mostly Collins) 34 targets 5.67 per game 19 catches 55.9% 289 yds 15.2 ypc and 0 TDs

Kenny Britt - next two games (Young starts) 1 target 0.5 per game 1 catch 100% 7 yds 7.0 ypc and 0 TDs

Kenny Britt - last eight games (Young starts) 40 targets 5.0 per game 22 catches 55.0% 405 yds 18.4 ypc and 3 TDs

After slipping in playing time during the middle of the season, Britt finished stronger than he started. He still lacked targets to score well as a fantasy option at WR, but he played well, averaged 18.4 ypc and scored three TDs in 8 games. He did not start until week 10 and made the most of that opportunity. At his position, his competition is Nate Washington, undrafted six year player with a career high of 47 catches, Justin Gage, a 5th round pick in his 8th season with a career high of 55 catches, and rookie Damian Williams. Britt, unless he really slips badly should be a constant at the WR position for the Titans and should be the most targeted WR. Titan TEs in 09 totaled 123 targets and 81 catches and Chris Johnson was also featured prominently with 71 targets and 50 receptions.

Personally, I think that CJ will not get as many chances in 2010, partly based on history of RBs with over 400 touches in the year after and partly because he is simply too valuable to the Titans for them to risk losing him. I also think that Kenny Britt will grow into the most targeted red zone option and greatly increase his TD production. Kenny Britt going at WR 33 and 95 overall could very well provide supreme value in this year's draft.

Kenny Britt 16 gms 112 targets (7.0 per game) 66 catches 58.9% for 1056 yards 16.0 ypc and 8 TDs

While I love Colin's writing at times, didn't much care for the Britt piece. CLEARLY was a bit much at times.

I felt like he missed the obvious fact that Fisher was trying Britt in different roles. He wrote of some different roles but then when it came to summing it all up it was as if he forgot. For example, getting on Britt for the final few games and pointing out how he was being used on a ton of kick returns. Yeah, Fish was trying different things with him. The season was done, the playoffs weren't really a possibility for much of the year, it was a development year.

The biggest two things for me that were missing were

1) Steve McNair's departure (only mentioned Mason) affecting the passing game.

2) Pointing out all the different WRs that were later picks that paraded through Tennessee over the years and not mentioning when Britt was drafted. That was a significant pick that many Titans fans have hoped for over the years and the team finally spent a high level pick on a WR. The pick, the potential, the coach showing a desire to utilize his skills, there is an absolute ton pointing to Britt being a significant part of the Titans offense for years to come.

One more thing-everyone in the NFL, every fan in the NFL etc., not just the Titans, learned that the sole success of Chris Johnson's running is not enough to bring home a championship. Yeah he's awesome and has a crazy bright future in the league but if his gaudy stats from last year aren't enough, then the Titans have to add pieces around him in order to win a Supe. I feel like the Titans definitely plan on Kenny Britt being one of those pieces.

Wherever his ADP is in August, it wouldn't be crazy to take him a smidge earlier. Later in drafts it's of some comfort that some WR is his team's "#1 WR" so why not have that feeling about Britt and grab him a little early?

Another bump. I drafted Kenny with my final pick, and admittedly don't know squat about him. Any TEN homers care to chime in? I like what I see on the yootoob.

I'd also be curious to hear this. Sounds like he's struggling to even beat out Gage/Washington for a starting spot. Is he worth hanging onto?

I read somewhere recently that Britt was beating out Gage and he was starting with Washington in preseason games so far. That doesn't mean he is a great bet but I don't think it is at clear that he hasn't been able to win a starting spot yet.

Gage hurt on his lone catch the week before.

Britt is promising, Fish (almost always) makes the young players work hard to get it. I have zero worry in Britt being a huge part of the Titans passing offense. Concern for me is will they pass enough and how will Young doBTW They have 6 WR that would have made the team in other years. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to trade Gage or wound up waiving him.Hawkins, Mariani and Williams look too good and are too young to cut in favor of Gage IMO. Mariani is the obvious cut, but the guy has been making plays since the spring so he's not likely to make it to the PS.

Tennessee Titan Kenny Britt puts distractions behind him

Titans receiver Kenny Britt beat himself up following a dreadful preseason finale. Then Coach Jeff Fisher made it known the second-year pro needed to get focused or be prepared to sit on the bench.

Monday, Britt said it's all behind him.

"It's always a clean slate, every time you come on the practice field, any time you come in the meeting rooms," Britt said. "I am not trying to dwell on that. I am just trying to stay focused and do what I have done my whole life, to play football. You can't blame someone for a bad day. Maybe I'll have a great day next."

The Titans hope that's the case as they prepare for Sunday's season opener against the Raiders. They are looking for a big year from Britt, the 2009 first-round pick who led the team in receiving yards last season, but at times he has had problems staying focused.

Against the Saints last week, Britt dropped two passes and was penalized for a false start, prompting Fisher to remove him from the game.

"It definitely was a wake up call. I have to focus more and not let outside things distract me,'' Britt said.

"My expectation is to be better than last year. I never set goals for myself. I take it one day at a time and I know God has a plan for me. I am really motivated and I have a quarterback motivating me every day. I have faith in myself and know I can do it."

Fisher said Britt seems to be in better form this week.

"Kenny has been in and working," he said. "He is focused today and in the game plan and obviously hoping to contribute. He finished up strong for us at the end of the year and we need to create an environment where he can just continue to improve."
http://www.tennessean.com/article/20100907/SPORTS01/9070346The bolded doesn't sit well with me. Not a lot of accountability. Sounds like the guy is your typical "million dollar talent, ten cent head" type. Sad, if true.

He's very young for a NFL receiver.

If he were on any other team I would have parted wasy with him already.

If anyone can get him going in the right direction it's Fisher!

He's a WR4/5 and long-term project in my dynasty league.

Patience, the talent is there.

Certainly don't disagree. I don't have him in dynasty, but do have him in redraft. Not sure what Fisher can do this season. I will stash him for the first four games and keep an eye on him.
