2010 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Reggie Wayne, WR, Indianapolis Colts

Player Page Link: Reggie Wayne Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or :goodposting: ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

He has two 100+ reception seasons the past 2 years. Had a very shaky WR2 opposite him so he might have had an uptick last season which could mean a slight downtick this year.

85-1200-8Tds

That's really his floor.

I think you mean the past 3 years. When Marvin Harrison turned 31 and Wayne emerged Harrison's yardage plummeted. Wayne will turn 32 this year and now has a duo (possibly a trio) of young receivers who could emerge- during the next 3 seasons Wayne will see his production decline- while its not a guarantee to happen this year I think we need to start "pricing in" the likely hood that Wayne drops to more of a perennial 80/1100/7 guy, and I think for sure we need to temper upside expectations (at least the probability of hitting his upside). Still a top 10 receiver but much less likely to be top 5.

#1 target for Peyton Manning will always have a solid year. Wayne has produced in the past, I don't think he's going to slow down this year. But I do think the ball will be spread around a little more, so I don't see huge numbers. Safe selection for a WR1.

85 rec, 1150 yds, 9TD

Wayne scored 8 of his first 10 TDs in the first 10 weeks of the season. And his numbers started to decline a little in the second half. Wayne though can still ball but you have to think this is the year he comes back to earth a little. With Garcon, Collie, Clark and healthy Gonzo and Addai and Brown it will be hard for anyone in the mix to grab 100 balls.

I think 85-1200-8 TDs is a fair and safe projection for Wayne on June the 15th.

 I agree with this..I expect more of the same from Reggie, maybe just a minimal downgrade in production..I would only take Andre and Moss before Wayne.

I think he's on a decline. If you look at his last 10 games (playoffs included) of last year and pro-rate it out to a full season, he'd only account for around 880 yards and a few TDs.

Garcon', on the other hand, if you take his last 10 games and pro-rate it out to a full-season, he'd account for over 1100 yards and more TDs than Wayne.

I think you're seeing a shift in the Colts offense in an effort to spread the ball out more and I'm not sure Wayne has another 1200+ yard season in him.

80 Receptions, 1020 yards, 6 TDs - a solid season, but a severe disappointment for those taking him in the top 3 rounds.

Put me in the camp that thinks Reggie Wayne is being slightly overvalued. I just don't think that he's a lock to be a top ten receiver and he's being taken in the first five wide receivers off the board. There's a chance that he sees fewer targets and receptions this season due to the improved receiver corps that Manning has at his disposal. Talented receivers who get 150+ receptions are strong bets to finish in the top ten, and unfortunately, the presence of Garcon, Collie, Clark, and Gonzalez can prevent Wayne from getting the workload he got last season. I think that's why his second half numbers weren't as good last season. Still, Reggie Wayne has the luxury of Peyton throwing him the football so it's hard to get too carried away in predicting a downturn.

80 receptions for 1150 yards and 8 touchdowns

Does anyone else have a bad feeling about Wayne this year? Lots of emerging options in Indy and Wayne looked old in the second half of last year, killed a lot of teams who had him as #1. Am I crazy to consider Colston over him? This is likely the choice I will have.

I see about 1000 yds & 8 TD's which does not justify his ADP at all.

Is he on the decline?

Wayne was dealing with both a lingering groin and a lingering leg injury during the second half of last season. I was worried about Wayne being on a decline too, but then I came across the below passage. I trust the source because of his knowledge and he's generally not one to heap praise.“I mean, I can’t say enough about Reggie Wayne,’’ Belichick said. “That guy is the best receiver we cover every year and it seems like he just keeps getting better. I thought the routes he ran and the catches he made were nothing short of spectacular, with the go route, the two touchdown catches, the third-down conversion on the corner route in front of our bench. He’s a tremendous receiver and he had some production against us.’’. November 17, 2009

He's looked pretty good so far in the preseason - a lot of people are touting him at the bottom of the WR1 Tier (maybe WR8 or WR9) - I say you definately take him there as he has upside to finish top5.

He's just a solid WR and would any of us be suprised to see him post 90/1300/9

Nope.
