2010 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars

Player Page Link: Tony Romo Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or :banned: ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Only thing that could stop him from producing top 5 RB numbers is injury. Great back in a good situation for stats.

Some slight tweaks on last year's numbers, but not much change expected.

295 carries, 1325 yds rush, 13 rush TD's, 55 rec, 415 yds rec, 2 rec TD's, 2 fumbles lost

Could reach 2,000 total yards and 20 TD's if the team plays well, but I don't know that they have improved that much from last season.

He's a true workhorse for the Jags. He can run for yardage, touchdowns and can get you receptions, an exceptinal talent. Last season he finally was strictly the feature back and he did what people thought he could do and that is become a fantasy STUD. How often he runs and how hard he works, one has to eventually worry about this guy wearing down but I don't see it coming this season.

1200 yards, 12 td's 52 receptoins for 450 yards and 3 td's

The team might stink this year, but the Oline should be improved. If garrard can play some decent football, the offense might be OK. MJD might not have the highest ceiling, but he has the highest floor than any other Rb in the league. I think the Jags might want to scale back his touches a bit, but i dont think they will have the luxury.

298 carries, 1320, 12 TD's, 61 rec, 569 yards, 2 TD's

I think MJD has the highest floor of any running back in the league. The fact that he can get his points in so many different ways makes him a great week to week producer, especially in PPR. I think the offense should improve and if he can get better run blocking up front, then watch out. I think there is some moderate upside if some of the younger receivers and tackles improve their play. If I had any doubts about Chris Johnson, then this is who I would take.

300 carries for 1350 yards and 60 receptions for 525 yards and 14 total touchdowns.

c'mon people.... lets not forget he received lasik eye surgery this offseason...
Yea, that can't hurt..I remember reading something about him seeing the field really blurry in the past and now he can see a whole lot better. MJD's stats last year as a feature back were:

312 - 1,391 - 15 ... (4.46 YPC)

53 - 374 - 1 ... (7.06 YPR)

Not a whole lot has changed with the Jags for 2010, so I don't expect much different numbers from MJD this year. If anything, I feel his numbers should get better with another year of experience on that O-Line and hopefully a continued emergence from Sims-Walker..also solid play from Garrard would really help as well.

So I'll project much the same, with maybe a slight uptick in YPC..

310 - 1,400 - 14 ... (4.50 YPC)

50 - 400 - 2 ... (8.00 YPR)

Glad to have this guy as one of my keepers in my 10-team keeper league

Will he be ready by training camp?
he's been ready. i was just jokingly suggesting he's going to do a bit better than projected... though it'll likely make minimal to no difference at all.
With the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jones-Drew's primary worries on a football field come at close range, in small spaces. So his nearsightedness was never that big of an issue for him. Still, this offseason he had Lasik surgery and now he's seeing things more clearly, at work and away from the field. "It was 70-40 before and now it's [cornerback] Scotty Starks vision: 15-20," Jones-Drew told me recently. "I didn't wear contacts. I was just out there playing off instincts. Blurry. You get used to it. I was nearsighted. So I could see up close, I just couldn't see on those long passes." "It's a huge difference. Now, I can see the laces. You can see them coming at you from 20, 30, 40 feet away." Jones-Drew never thought of it as a big football issue. He's been a good receiver in his four seasons, but he is a running back targeted on short stuff that gives him a chance to run in space, not a guy who's asked to run many routes far downfield. "[Trainers] said if you can play with it, if you can handle it, you're fine," he said. "I've been playing with it since I was in college, though, so it wasn't that bad. I had contacts in college and I got hit and one fell out and it got all irritated. I didn't wear anything. They said if I had to pass my driver's test again I probably wouldn't have passed." It wasn't football that really motivated his decision to have the surgery. He said he grew increasingly frustrated from things like not being able to read signs and get where he wanted to go. "I can see now," he said. "They say I might have 15-20." We'll find out this fall if there are additional benefits on the field.

Yeah, I was just joking along with you.

For some reason, MJD fell to me in the second round, 14th overall pick. :goodposting: Everyone started screaming about his miniscus and rumors of surgery, even missing 4-6 weeks. Everything I read says he's good to go for game 1. Did I get the steal of the century or will I be fooled soon enough?

I could see maybe taking Gore or even Andre Johnson or Rogers over him, depending on scoring, but 14th?!?!? That's insane...

But seriously, and I never ask this, are there guys in the league that know very little about fantasy football?

I passed him up at 7 overall to take Rodgers... but was thinking about MJD there. Then some crazy #### started being said and he kept falling and he fell into my lap in the 2nd. :goodposting:There were a few owners who openly screamed at teams 8,9 and 10 for letting him fall that far. I giggled.

:goodposting: We've been in this league for 17 years, they're all pretty good. Pick #8 started yapping about surgery and him missing 4-6 weeks and I guess the teams behind him panicked and let him go.

Took Gore over him tonight, I had the second pick, Rice and CJ where keepers, ADP went number 1. I also snaked Rashad Jennings with the last pick of the draft just in case his knee blows up. I think the improved line and easiest RB schedule for the 49ers were the things that put me over the edge to take Gore in front of him. Hopefully I won't regret it.

Guy in my league was so scared by the injury possibility he traded him to more before we even start. Its redraft and I now have MJD and AP when I drafted AP 4th and he drafted mjd 5th. The guys my bud but i cant believe he did that.

Thanks for sharing. Did ya'll have pizza or wings? Did anyone crack any funny jokes? Any beer..maybe give us a taste breakdown of your favorite? MJD: 276 carries, 1211 yds, 11 TDs----38 rec, 260 yds, 2 TDs

Top 5 back....again.

1700 total yards with 37 receptions and 12 TD's.

Can't believe his value is so low right now. In my $320 full IDP auction I managed to pick up Gore and Ray Rice both for $53. MJD was nominated quite some time later and I picked him up for $29 as my "RB3". Can't believe he's going that low.

No, they are NOT all pretty good. If someone would have said any of that stuff at any of my drafts.... people might have chuckled... and MJD would have still went 3rd overall. People who are good at FF are up to date on things like MJD having a critical injury. Not only that... but he would have never even dropped to the 8th pick to begin with, let alone the 14th.

Fell to me at 5. I never thought he would be there. It was either him or Gore. But I have Gore on other squads so I rolled with MJD. I think the internet has made some owners make bad bad decisions.

What is your problem and why are you singling out 4x? This is a thread about MJD and I think it's pertinent to hear about where he's falling in other drafts.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that there are "questions and doubts around the league" regarding the health of Maurice Jones-Drew's knee.

Schefter confirms that Jones-Drew will start Sunday, but it sounds like there is serious concern about whether he'll be 100 percent. It's never a good sign when a running back has a knee injury, period. We can't imagine sitting MJD in such a favorable matchup (the Broncos' front seven is incredibly weak), but it's a situation to track closely early in the year. Jones-Drew owners must grab Rashad Jennings. Deep leaguers can pick up Deji Karim.
