2010 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Kellen Winslow, TE, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Player Page Link: Kellen Winslow Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or :goodposting: ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

After an injury riddled 2008, Winsow came back last year and had a solid fantasy football season. He's got an exciting young QB running the show down in Tampa and young QB's like to throw to their TE. There's no reason not to expect Winslow to easily post top 10 TE numbers and possibly challenge top 5 TE numbers this season.

76 receptions for 840 yards and 6 td's

Winslow had an excellent year considering he played with three different QB's, two of which had never started an NFL game before and that was in an offense that canned their OC right before the season began.

I've long believed that strictly as a pass catcher Winslow is either the best or 2nd best TE in the NFL, he's just been unlucky to spend his career with terrible QB's. Its very possible by the end of this year we could honestly say Josh Freeman is the best QB Wisnlow has ever had, outside of the 6 weeks where Derek Anderson looked like a pro bowler.

Benn and Williams are decent prospects, but Winslow will be the main weapon in the passing game for at least this year, and if the reports out of Tampa's camp about Freeman looking much improved this offseason are accurate then Winslow could be an excellent value pick. I'm not worried about his knees, he gets a surgery done every off season, in a weird way I actually think it may help him since it means less wear and tear in camps.

I'll give Winslow: 85 catches on 130 targets for 1,000 yards and 6 TD's. I think he'll be a top-5 TE and can probably had outside of most top-5's. If I can't get Gates or Davis early, I'll wait a few more rounds and get Winslow.

No love for a guy who finished in the top 10 for fantasy TE's three of the last four years?

Knee Surgeries or not, the guy had 11 games with eight or more targets. Given the fact that the Bucs will be starting several young, inexperienced WRS this season, shouldn't Winslow see a ton of action because he is the only proven guy on the team?

Freeman started the last 9 games. In those games Winslow totaled 77 targets, 46 rec, 589 yds, 1 td. It's not always right to extrapolate those #'s over a who;e season, but I will sort of estimate where they will be with another offseason of experience for both Freeman and Winslow in the offense.

80-960-7

Placing him right near top 5 territory. Go get him while you can.

If you believe Winslow will get those numbers, why get Gates or Davis early? By early, I'm assuming you mean 4th round correct? Winslow's ADP is 9.09 five rounds later and a good chance he may drop a little lower than that in your draft.

He seems to have knee surgeries every offseason (I guess he is the TE version of MArk Schlereth), but they don't seem to slow him down, so his latest one doesn't bother me.

I have noticed (with zero stats offhand to back it up!) that td's for each tight end fluctuate. Drafting a tight end based off last seasons tds are a bad move, IMO. And that is why I like Winslow. His td numbers don't jump out at you, but he quietly put up another top 10 season with a tough surrounding cast. Huge value guy, and he is the tight end I am targeting in my drafts.

I am going with 79 receptions 948 yards and 6 tds.

I know Jeff Tefertiller feels Winslow is good value this year.

Andy Hicks also thinks that he's undervalued.

Latest news indicates that Winslow's knee is healed and he'll be ready for camp:

(Thu Jul 15, 02:33 PM) - Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris said TE Kellen Winslow (knee) will be ready for the start of training camp, reports Stephen Holder, of the St. Petersburg Times.

Thoughts on Winslow the rest of the way? Will he be a top 10 TE this year?

Even though he was 2nd in targets in week 1, he is still on the Bucs and they won't be scoring a ton of points this year. Also, Freeman is still in the learning stages of being an NFL QB.

eoMMan, your avatar is hot. As a Winslow owner myself, I wonder how much explosiveness he has lost to make big plays. Still, I see him being valuable in PPR because of the targets.

Freeman has a broken thumb he is coming back from and rookie Mike Williams is still feeling his way around the field but believe me he's getting the feel of the place quickly, that catch he made in the back of the end zone last week was a thing of beauty. The 20,000 fans that didn't show up for the game missed an amazing coming out party for the rookie. I think once Williams and Freeman hook up on some longer pass plays that the middle of the field is going to be wide open for Winslow by about the 5th or 6th game. I don't think TB will fare well against Carolina this week so I would put KW on a buy low list here pretty soon.

Thank you, but yours is hotter. :sadbanana:

Buddy was on the phone with a coach at TB. Winslow is considering rehab. Something about not being able to get off of painkillers (cortisone shots every week and docs saying he shouldn't even be standing).

So, he's missed the last 3 practices and is listed as Questionable for Week 2. What are the odds he plays for those of us that are a bit challenged in the TE2 department?

Kellen Winslow (knee) is listed as questionable for Week 2 after missing the majority Friday's practice. Officially, his practice participation was listed as "limited."

Winslow is the rare player that can play and play well without practicing, but we'd look elsewhere this week. Coach Raheem Morris acknowledged that Winslow is "experiencing some pain" in his six-times surgically repaired right knee. He didn't take part in Wednesday or Thursday's work, either, and has been surpassed by rookie Mike Williams as the Bucs' top receiving threat. There are healthier, safer tight end plays in fantasy.

I'm thinking this may be the beginning of the end and I'm an owner.

Thinking that if you have him in a dynasty its time to move him.

Been trying with no takers!

this is nothing new for winslow. he has always had pain in that new. sure, it may be the "beginning of the end" but this is no different than any of the other missed practices for the last 3 yrs.

You don't think Mike Williams , Arrelious Benn and Sammie Stroughter will eat into his targets if he's not on the practice field?

In practice, sure.
