Titans quarterback Chris Simms was arrested in New York City early this morning for operating a motor vehicle while impaired by marijuana, the New York Post is reporting.

According to the report, Simms "was observed with red eyes, flushed face and slurred speech at around 2 a.m."

Simms spent Thursday morning getting booked and awaiting arraignment at Manhattan Criminal Court.

Simms is the second Titans quarterback to be arrested in less than a month; Vince Young got an assault citation in June for hitting someone at a strip club in Dallas.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Chris Simms — son of former Giants quarterback Phil Simms — was busted in the West Village this morning on charges of driving while stoned, The Post has learned.

Simms, 29, of Nashville, was stopped while driving his 2009 Mercedes Benz through an NYPD Manhattan South Task Force checkpoint on W. Houston Street at 1:35 a.m., according to a source.

Simms reeked of marijuana and admitted to officers he had smoked earlier in the car, a source said.

He also had red eyes, flushed face and slurred speech, sources added.

Chris Simms Simms is the son of former Super Bowl MVP Phil Simms, and has played for the Denver Broncos and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has struggled to regain starter status since rupturing his spleen while playing for Tampa Bay in 2005.

In April, he signed a one-year contract with the Titans, where he formerly played in 2008.

Phil Simms is now a football analyst with CBS, has a second son, Matt, who also plays football.

Simms tells a completely different story. The differences between his story and the police story are huge, even differing on the number of people in the car.

"My client never admitted to smoking marijuana that night. He said he was smoking cigarettes that night," said Simms’ attorney, Nathan Semmel, who revealed that two other unnamed passengers were in the car at some point during the evening.

"The DA should investigate whether those two individuals were responsible for the marijuana odor."

His explanation is that he was smoking cigarettes near his eight month pegnant wife. Does he have a history of smoking cigarettes such that we believe he would need one at 2 in the morning with his wife next to him in a car? If so, why the red eye reaction to something he does regularly? Or are we to believe that a professional athlete thought it would be a good idea to take up smoking, do so next to his pregnant wife, and because he was new to it he had negative reactions to his eyes and speach?

Did he have a lighter, a book of matches, or a pack of cigs on him?

I can abide a stoner, though not one who drives his pregnant wife around. I can't abide a really bad liar.

Imagine you are Chris Simms, though. Your Dad expects you to follow in his footsteps to Super Bowl glory (22 of 25!). There is a massive burden of expectation on your shoulders throughout your career which you fail to deliver on. Must be pretty depressing.

Not surprised he's not going in the right direction.

NEW YORK -- Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Chris Simms needs to add a new date to his 2010 season: an October trial in his New York City drugged-driving case.

Simms didn't make it to court Monday in the case. He's in the midst of Titans preseason activities in Nashville. A Manhattan judge agreed to excuse Simms but said he needs to be there Oct. 7 for a hearing and trial.

Police say Simms, 29, slurred his words and told them he'd been smoking marijuana before he was stopped at a checkpoint July 1. The 29-year-old has said he was just talking about cigarettes.

He faces charges including a misdemeanor count of driving while impaired by drugs.

Simms is the son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms. Chris Simms is 7-9 as a starter and has thrown for 3,117 yards and 12 touchdowns with 18 interceptions during his six-year NFL career.

Simms is in his second stint with the Titans. He came to Tennessee in 2008 after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then returned to the Titans after playing for the Denver Broncos in 2009.

Simms was a third-round draft pick by the Bucs in 2003.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

They should make him an exception for the NFL substance abuse policy. It might make the spleenless wonder play better.

Major Applewhite would have passed the field sobriety test and then delivered his wife's baby in the backseat.
After he failed the first 3/4ths of the sobriety test, he really should have called Major Applewhite to come save him in the last quarter of it.
