2010 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Greg Olsen, TE, Chicago Bears

Player Page Link: Greg Olsen Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or :goodposting: ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Guess I'll be the first here.

Best receiving option on the team? Yes.

Will Martz utilize him as such? Doubtful.

Not a big Martz fan at all. Believes too much in his system of the past & not enough on utilizing his best players.

Projection: 50 510 6

I think Greg will be a buy low in dynasty leagues after this year. Not sure exactly why the Bears didn't deal him this offseason.

Hey guys - We all know that Martz likes to abuse fantasy TES.

However, Olsen has 107 targets last season and he led the team with 60 receptions.

Would you draft him this season? What can we expect from a guy who has clearly been a big focus of the Chicago offense.

This pretty much says it all, doesn't it? No responses for a guy many thought would be a fixture and key to the Bears resurgence just a season ago. Mike Martz' offensive play-calling tendencies are so ingrained in our minds that we've all but discounted Olsen as having any real fantasy value this year. Is that wise? It's hard to imagine Martz would really ignore a talent like Olsen, but it's also hard to ignore his history or the fact they signed Brandon Manumalenua to block.

Just consider what Mike Martz did for Vernon Davis when he was the 49ers. Then consider Mr. Olsen's plight. WW fodder in my league, as the TE class is overall very deep and very strong. If Olsen's situation changed and he were traded or something, well....

One and done for Martz. One wasted year for Olsen. They finish 4th and the Bears clean house.

I don't disagree that Olsen may be a wasted talent this season, which is a real shame. Would you draft him as your TE2 though? What do you think his baseline numbers look like? 30 catches? 3-5 TDs? That hardly seems aggressive to me.

Vernon Davis, another talented TE, got stuck under the Martz Madness in San Francisco. He put up 31/358/2. A slight uptick based on QB play, and WALA:

35 receptions

400 yards

3 TDs

400 blocks

The way I see it is they didnt signed Brandon Manumalenua for $6 mil to sit on the bench. However, the Bears also utilized a two TE set more than any other team in the league. I also saw where Martz had V. Davis stay in and block on a ridiculous amount of snaps (cant recall the exact #). Dont forget they also have K. Davis and Clark. All things considered, Olsen is FF irrelevant.

Actually he is my #2 behind Dallas Clark. Banking on Martz 1 and done. Don't want to get rid of him. There's no doubt that after seeing Vernon Davis tear it up with Jimmy Raye as OC, that Martz will once again fail to utilize his best players even adequately.

like most I dont expect much from olsen this year with Martz history of TE use.

but from today's practice, Cutler hits Olsen over deep middle for TD in traffic, that was the best catch of day.

What i cant wrap my mind around is the hype that Vernon Davis was getting when Martz was with OC then didnt produce. He has a history of limited TE use. Im not sure if Martz is changing a little bit in his philosophy or if its the same hype with SF.

I think he'll be a little better than that despite the Martzophobia that will keep people from drafting him. Still not a fantasy starter, but break down the TDs people expect Cutler to be throwing this year and I think you have to award a fair # to Olsen (who scored 2, 5 and 8 so far).50 rec., 6 TDsA good enough backup if you're the type to draft one.

Olsen is having a great camp as a catching TE. Him and Cutler have been hooking up a lot. they have been doing red zone drills lately and Olsen has a lot of TDs, yesterday he had 6TDs. on just about every draft sheet he is listed too low IMO.

I would bump him up based on how his training camp is going. I would say he should be take before Owen Daniels and not in the Scheffler territory.

the reason why he is low is not the lack of his talent as a receiver but Martz history with TEs. it seems like Martz is realizing his past mistakes. he knows like all of us they he missed used V Davis.

Martz and Cutler have the most passionate bromance I have seen with a coach and a player. also

Cutler and Olsen are close friends, and they do good chemistry. It seems realistic that Martz would be changing some of his how he plays TEs. this is my speculation based on what I have been hearing out of camp.

Greg Olsen could be the Bears #1 WR this season, even with Martz, who does not feature TE's. Olsen had 5 targets and 3 receptions in the first half last night.

Not a great start for Olsen - was counting on him for TE1 production - anyone see the games to give an update on how he has looked?
