1.11 Jackson, Steven STL RB
I didn't expect him to fall to me, and the preparation I had done assumed QB or WR with my first pick. I'm thrilled to get him with this pick.
2.02 Grant, Ryan GBP RB
Meh - I figured I'd be happiest if I secured two RBs early, since this isn't PPR. Grant isn't inspiring, but I felt like I'd be stuck taking three mediocre backs in my next four picks if I skipped one here.
3.11 Gates, Antonio SDC TE
4.02 Addai, Joseph IND RB
I had a hard time deciding on the order - talking to Wimer, who was at the turn, it didn't matter - I would have gotten both either way. Gates should be massive without Jackson around. He's old and his feet are a problem, but he should be good for five weeks. Addai was one I really liked getting this late. If I'd expected him to be here, I might not have taken Grant earlier. At this point, I feel like I can ignore RB for pretty much the rest of the draft with three solid guys. The Gates pick started a run at TE.
5.11 Sims-Walker, Mike JAC WR
6.02 Moss, Santana WAS WR
I had no WRs, so wanted two. After struggling to pick which of these two to take first, it didn't matter - Wimer went RB/RB between my picks. Both of these guys get TDs, and I think both have underrated offenses this season. Of course I'm behind the rest of the league at WR by waiting until the end of the 5th to take my first, but in survivors I've always done well by drafting a crapload of WRs rather than studs. Moss has always been hit or miss, which works in survivors.
7.11 McNabb, Donovan WAS QB
8.02 Knox, Johnny CHI WR
I checked Wimer's rankings since he didn't have any QBs yet. I wanted McNabb or Palmer, but they were his next two QBs ranked, so I had to choose one rather than take another postition first. McNabb is a nice guy to get this late in my opinion. If I hadn't taken him, I would have ended up wiht Knox and Palmer, which would have been fine also. I like this better, though. Knox could easily have a couple of games with 40-yard TDs in the first five games. He's ideal for this format.
9.11 Gaffney, Jabar DEN WR
10.02 Young, Vince TEN QB
The young WRs in Denver are hurt, and Eddie Royal really sucks. So, their TEs will have to... oh, wait - they don't have any receiving TEs. I guess their RBs will... no, everyone's hurt. Gaffney and Royal are the only guys healthy and I expect Gaffney to get a boatload of targets in the first five weeks. Young might be a bit of a reach, but he has some monster games from time to time, which is something I look for in survivors.
11.11 Sproles, Darren SDC RB
12.02 Eagles, Philadelphia PHI Def
I felt pretty secure at all positions at this point, but was a little light on numbers at RB. Sproles has always been dangerous from anywhere on the field, so a 60-yard TD could happen. I'm sure most think this was too early for a defense, but they were tops on my list and I felt my starting lineup was more important than depth given the makeup of my team to this point. Drafting 11th means you're behind from the start, and I wanted to get strong at the off positions. With Gates and my top D, this seemed right. Six Ds went in this area, so I guess I wasn't alone.
13.11 Moore, Lance NOS WR
14.02 Naanee, Legedu SDC WR
I needed more depth at WR. Lance Moore could be gold at the beginning of the season with Meachem's injury. Naanee is good after the catch and has a good situation for the first few weeks at least - he may be the third option, but Rivers is great and defenses are likely to focus on Floyd and Gates. Rivers will find him.
15.11 Freeman, Josh TBB QB
16.02 Fells, Daniel STL TE
My QBs are below average, so I took a third pretty early. This was a function of both my QB weakness and what I felt was a good roster everywhere else. I'd never start Freeman, but he could score for me. Fells is a second TE in case Gates gets hurt. The WRs aren't great, rookie QB who's used to having Gresham... maybe Fells breaks out.
17.11 Hartley, Garrett NOS PK
18.02 Williams, Roy DAL WR
I love these two picks. Hartley's my top kicker (NO offense + dome + good kicker) and I think I got the best pick at all three off positions. I don't like Roy Williams, but the 18th is pretty amazing to get him in a survivor, I think. Dez is missing time, Witten's being asked to block more, and Roy catches TDs. Not bad in survivor.
19.11 Buccaneers, Tampa Bay TBB Def
20.02 Orton, Kyle DEN QB
It felt like this should have been a 20-round draft. My team was set, so I was just looking to fill out backups and look for upside guys. Orton's on a terrible team, but his RBs are all hurt and he might have to throw a ton early on. Four QBs for a five week season... why not?
21.11 Jennings, Rashad JAC RB
22.02 Nugent, Mike CIN PK
I like Nugent this season. The Bengals look great on paper. Jennings is just in case MJD gets hurt.
23.11 Browns, Cleveland CLE Def
24.02 Cook, Jared TEN TE
I once won a league somewhat like this based almost entirely on Seattle's defense putting up a game for the ages. A third D comes from that memory - sometimes things come together and a defense just has a monster game. I've got more chances for that to happen. Cook's a flier with a ton of talent, and they keep saying they want him more involved.
Overall, I'm happy. One of four QBs, one of three Ds, and one of seven WRs have byes during our 5-week season. Looking back, it would have been nice to put one more WR on there instead of the third TE, but after Williams I didn't think there was anyone worth taking.
The draft room was fun.
