Louis Murphy (1 Viewer)

As a WR3 think he could have some decent value? How much does his stock rise with Cambell now at QB?
WR3? He is going off the board in the middle teens, he's more like a WR5 or WR6...if you are saying he can perform at a WR3 level perhaps you are right. But understand these preseason games get a little overblown. I am optimistic about Murphy though and think when you add in the injury risk of Schillens and the disappearing act of DHB that he will be the only reliable WR for them.

Yeah, that was my question...can he perform at a wr3 level? Its a PPR league and as the 82nd WR taken in Dodds new top 300, I really think he may be a good value pick that late.

We don't just have preseason games though. It's not saying much but he was the Raiders most reliable WR last years as a rookie.

Agreed

I guess that injury thing happened sooner than expected:

Raiders WR Chaz Schilens is out indefinitely after having his troublesome knee scoped on Tuesday.

Scratch him off your cheatsheet and give Louis Murphy a nice bump; Schilens probably isn't going to play before midseason while also trying to get his twice-surgically repaired foot back into playing shape. We can't really say it's a blow to the Raiders' offense because Schilens has hardly played to this point in his three-year career. Murphy and Darrius Heyward-Bey will be the Opening Day starting wideouts. Zach Miller is a sleeper to lead all tight ends in targets.

Remember that Murphy had 4/128/2 against the Steelers and it coincidentally came with JaMarcus Russell benched. He turned it on late last year and finished 34/521/4. He had dropped at least a couple more TD's that were probably rookie mistakes.

With an entrenched starting spot, Murphy has a shot to develop his 2nd season.

I'd look for 60/1000/7 from Murphy, but that depends somewhat on DHB producing on the opposite side. Regardless, Campbell throws a nice deep ball, and is better than Gradkowski. Murphy can only improve on last years numbers. Definitely can develop into a WR3.

DHB update:

Media types are still on the rampage about Darrius Heyward Bey.

Why?

First of all, if you buy the adage "Any publicity is good publicity" the Raiders have scored a coup. Bey's condition has brought about a storm of stories about the Raiders.

Most of them are speculative and most of them slanted in a negative light but thats the Raiders relationship with the media anyway.

After last years embarrassing storylines this hardly seems like a ship sinker.

Some in the media may feel Oakland isn't being forth coming enough about Bey's condition. Some seem to be accusing the the Raiders of lying and others seem to have sniffed out a quick way to band wagon a story that draws Raider fans and Raider haters without doing any work.

Probably a little of each.

So what is wrong with Bey?

Maybe he does have a hammy issue. If he does he sure hasn't been treating it. RB Darren McFadden and several other Raiders have hammy injuires and they are constantly stretching, working them, cold tubbing them and using all manner of treatements to get them healthy.

Bey has been spotted on the sidelines running and for the majority of it without ice and or tape.

Either Oakland is being negligent in letting an injured wide receiver continue damaging himself or he doesn't have a hamstring inury.

So then what is wrong with him?

Oaklands says that Bey is simply "fatigued".

The 2nd yr Wide Receiver has worked long and hard this off season. As boring and un exciting as it may sound, maybe just maybe, he really is just tired and in need of a rest.

Reporters scoffed at this notion as did uninformed fans. "Fatigued", "What the hell does that mean?"

Only Bey and the Raiders know for sure, but what it could mean is that Bey has a serious medical condition they don't want to discuss. Of course that doesn't seem likely given the fact he's on the field running.

It could also mean Oakland thinks he's ready and are resting the uninjured and heavily scrutinized 7th overall pick.

Its going to be a long, long season ahead.

Why not just say that?

Because, however unlikely, it might cause dissention in the ranks and it might cause media types to scrutinize the Raiders way of doing business (Like they don't already, but why help them hurt you?)

Hard as it may be to believe, the media sometimes has a way of casting somethings Raider in a negative light.

"Oh sure, go ahead and give star treatment to a guy with 9 catches last year!"

Or,

"Bey's so fragile he can't even make it through training camp!"

The facts are, there is a very real strategy to conserving and maintaining your weaponry.

There is also a benefit to concealing your strengths and weaknesses from your competition.

Whether the media likes it or not.

Louis Murphy is a very underrated player. He needs the Oakland passing game to show some life, but he could easily morph into a WR3 or better this year. He has talent and the two guys infront of him are not holding a strong grasp on the #1 and #2 WR spots.

If Campbell is as good as he was last season or better, there will be a vacuum for WR stats in Oakland. Someone besides Zach Miller is going to catch the ball.

With Chilens out for a while again with the new knee injury and DHB with a mysterious leg condition, Murphy may get his shot right out of the gate this year. He flashed some serious potential last year.

One play in particular said it all about him and he didn't even catch the ball during... the play where he sprung Zach Miller for a super long TD by making two solid blocks after sprinting down field with Miller to protect him.

I just picked this guy up in my rookie draft tail end of the 2nd round to be my wr6. While I am a die hard raider hater, I couldn't look past the fact that the raiders improved dramatically by getting Campbell. They will play from behind quite often and are going to have to throw the ball. DHB is nothing more than a combine star till he shows otherwise. I mean seriously fatigue? Cmon. What kind of football player sits out for that. This team doesn't have a #1 WR entrenched, Campbell likes Murphy and Schilens can't stay healthy. He has the potential to have some huge games this season, I wouldn't draft him to be a starter but def has huge upside to be trade bait and a big WR3.

I'm on the Murphy bandwagon. This guy is the most talented WR in Oakland. Campball isn't great, but he's WAY better than the crap they've had the last few years. DHB sucks and I'm writing him off as a bust as of now. Shillens is hurt again, so I'm writing him off. Johnnie Lee Higgens?

I haven't updated my numbers for Murphy yet, but I have a feeling that I'll end up higher on him than most people. Just because Zach Miller might be the #1 target, doesn't mean that Murphy can't put up 60/900/6. Is 70/1000/7 impossible? Surely, not. For how late this guy is getting drafted, he's certainly worth the pick. If he doesn't pan out, you didn't waste much of a pick. But not many WRs being drafted as late as him have that kind of realistic upside.

I think he has a very good chance at being a WR3 this year. I agree that it means that Oakland will probably run the ball a little more, but Murphy should see more targets, and he was impressive for a rookie last season. I took him last night about 100 spots before his ADP because I thought at that spot he represented the best upside and didn't want to miss out on him.

looked like the real deal again tonight. Though most of his yards came off of one play...but he did make the play and score.

We need to change this thread to the "******* Official Louis Murphy Bandwagon Thread ********"

Here are my current projections: 68/1013/7, good enough for WR23 in my PPR rankings.

Some more things to consider: He was drafted in the 4th round, but 2009 might prove to be the deepest WR class ever. He's clearly the best WR on the team. DHB is a joke. Chaz Schilens can't stay healthy and hasn't done much anyway.

34/521/4 is pretty solid for a rookie WR.

The Raiders will still be losing a fair number of ballgames. This team will pass enough for Murphy and Zach Miller to get enough targets.

I see no reason that any WR opposite him needs to produce to "take pressure off" him. The #2 WR is usually overrated for fantasy analysis as top WRs have produced with or without a solid guy opposite them. It's a myth theory.

I kicked the tires on Murphy all off-season, in much the same way I kicked the tires on Miles Austin last year. I didn't pull the trigger on Austin because I didn't trust my gut. I'm not making that mistake again. I like everything about him, he was the best WR on his team last year and he still is. He's got a QB who can actual complete passes. The Raiders will simply be better than last year and a rising tide raises all ships.

I project 57 catches, 880 yards, 5 touchdowns. This is about where Manningham finished last year. A solid WR3/bye week guy.

I'm very confident that Murphy will produce nice returns on investment right out of the gate. Whether it's Campbell or Gradkowski, he can get behind the defender and break the big play.

I am actually starting him in my FF starting lineup week #1 with H. Nicks as my other WR.

With confidence.

So it sounds like the Raiders had a very dizzy Bey last week.

Is Murphy better with Gradkoski than Campbell? 2 catches for 87 yards after Campbell left the game last week.

I really like Louis Murphy this season. Last year he showed me enough to leave me intrigued going into the off-season. I also like his attitude and his willingness to work, from stories and snippets I've read, he's the hardest working WR on the roster in Oakland and guys that work hard always get a bit of a bump in value because it shows that they're not merely relying on talent but trying to improve upon it. I think he's a very viable player that can give teams at least 4-5 solid starts this year and be a very solid depth player. I don't know if he'll be consistent enough to be an every week option, but he's definitely a good bye week filler or injury replacement. I got him in the 4th round of a rookie draft in July and think he has a chance to get between 800-900 yards with around 6-8 TDs.

I agree with your projection range.

I'm liking Murphy's opportunity and would like to pick him up but would drop Devin Hester to do so. How do you like him against someone like that (good QB, passing offense, but not the clear cut #1)? Berrian, Kevin Walter/Jacoby Jones comes to mind as well.

Murphy had 94 targets last year.....and only 34 catches. QB play can be blamed for some of it, but he has inconsistent hands, too.

I don't disagree with the inconsistent hands part, but really of the 34 catches, how many were circus catches where he had to use all his skill to get to the poorly thrown ball? How much of that is the mental aspect of knowing that if you have to go up late to get a ball that is poorly thrown, you are about to get creamed? You can't overstate the effect of JaMarcus Russell had on that team. It's amazing when you think about Z Miller's talent given the comic tragedy of errant passes that was the Raiders passing game last year. With accuracy comes consistency, and hard work ethic will likely make Louis Murphy one of the breakout WR's to watch this year.

Picked him in the 14th round of a 16 round, 12 team draft. Not sure you can get much more value than that in a draft.

14/52 (26,9%) with Jamarcus 20/44 (45,5%) with Gradwoski or Frye
 This is what I love about the Shark Pool. People digging for the deeper stats to enlighten us all. So while Murphy's hands aren't the best, we can be confident that he'll catch more than 34 of 94 with decent QB play.

His QB was the biggest bust in the history of sport. I give him a pass.
Me, too. That's the intriquing thing about his prospects with the QB upgrade this year, but he still needs to catch the damn ball.

pretty good company

The thing that worries me is if/when Schilens returns Murphy will move to WR#3. Heyward-Bey will be given every chance before they put him behind Murphy.

Not that Raider beat writer Jerry McDonald is a fantasy expert, but when asked in his chat who would lead the Raiders in receiving this year, he said Zach Miller would have the most receptions, but LM would have the most yardage and TD's.

I drafted him in as many rookie drafts as I could last year and picked him up as a trade add-on in a few leagues this summer. Even if I weren't a Gator fan, I'd be drinking the kool-aid. Definite WR3 1000 yard potential this year.

Can someone explain me why people talk about Schilens like he's Randy Moss or something like that ?I mean Schilens, 25 yrs old, injury prone, 591yds+4td in 2 yearsMurphy, 23 yrs old, 521yds+4td as a rookie

I don't think they talk about Chaz in those glowing terms anymore. Louis Murphy is the only game in town regarding Oakland WRs.

I think he is going to have a big year and provide tremendous value for where he was drafted. He and Massaquoi seemed to have found there way on to almost all of my teams.

A little more info from Roto: "Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune predicts that Louis Murphy will lead the Raiders in receiving yards and touchdowns this season.

McDonald foresees Zach Miller leading the club in receptions. Murphy finally has sole possession of the flanker job in Oakland, and should retain it even when (or if) Chaz Schilens (knee, ankle) returns. The ideal late-round sleeper -- especially in non-PPR leagues -- Murphy is quietly a threat for 900-1,000 receiving yards. He's light years out in front of Darrius Heyward-Bey."

If Murphy is being drafted near WR80, grab him. Miller will be a reception threat, but don't forget the Raiders will be a better overall team with more touchdown opportunities. I also expect DHB to catch more passes, but this will only help the passing game and Murphy.

I'm really starting to like Murphy this year. None of the defenses in the AFC West are particularly strong in the secondary and I expect most of the games to be shoot outs. He really has a ton of potential this year if Campbell can improve that dreadful offense and finds Murphy early and often.
