WR3? He is going off the board in the middle teens, he's more like a WR5 or WR6...if you are saying he can perform at a WR3 level perhaps you are right. But understand these preseason games get a little overblown. I am optimistic about Murphy though and think when you add in the injury risk of Schillens and the disappearing act of DHB that he will be the only reliable WR for them.As a WR3 think he could have some decent value? How much does his stock rise with Cambell now at QB?
Yeah, that was my question...can he perform at a wr3 level? Its a PPR league and as the 82nd WR taken in Dodds new top 300, I really think he may be a good value pick that late.WR3? We don't just have preseason games though. It's not saying much but he was the Raiders most reliable WR last years as a rookie.WR3? http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/38841491/ns/...ts-player_news/Raiders WR Chaz Schilens is out indefinitely after having his troublesome knee scoped on Tuesday.
Scratch him off your cheatsheet and give Louis Murphy a nice bump; Schilens probably isn't going to play before midseason while also trying to get his twice-surgically repaired foot back into playing shape. We can't really say it's a blow to the Raiders' offense because Schilens has hardly played to this point in his three-year career. Murphy and Darrius Heyward-Bey will be the Opening Day starting wideouts. Zach Miller is a sleeper to lead all tight ends in targets.
Yeah sure, but for a decade? This rope-a-dope thing Oakland is doing is masterful indeedThe facts are, there is a very real strategy to conserving and maintaining your weaponry.
So it sounds like the Raiders had a very dizzy Bey last week.DHB update:
Media types are still on the rampage about Darrius Heyward Bey.
Why?
First of all, if you buy the adage "Any publicity is good publicity" the Raiders have scored a coup. Bey's condition has brought about a storm of stories about the Raiders.
Most of them are speculative and most of them slanted in a negative light but thats the Raiders relationship with the media anyway.
After last years embarrassing storylines this hardly seems like a ship sinker.
Some in the media may feel Oakland isn't being forth coming enough about Bey's condition. Some seem to be accusing the the Raiders of lying and others seem to have sniffed out a quick way to band wagon a story that draws Raider fans and Raider haters without doing any work.
Probably a little of each.
So what is wrong with Bey?
Maybe he does have a hammy issue. If he does he sure hasn't been treating it. RB Darren McFadden and several other Raiders have hammy injuires and they are constantly stretching, working them, cold tubbing them and using all manner of treatements to get them healthy.
Bey has been spotted on the sidelines running and for the majority of it without ice and or tape.
Either Oakland is being negligent in letting an injured wide receiver continue damaging himself or he doesn't have a hamstring inury.
So then what is wrong with him?
Oaklands says that Bey is simply "fatigued".
The 2nd yr Wide Receiver has worked long and hard this off season. As boring and un exciting as it may sound, maybe just maybe, he really is just tired and in need of a rest.
Reporters scoffed at this notion as did uninformed fans. "Fatigued", "What the hell does that mean?"
Only Bey and the Raiders know for sure, but what it could mean is that Bey has a serious medical condition they don't want to discuss. Of course that doesn't seem likely given the fact he's on the field running.
It could also mean Oakland thinks he's ready and are resting the uninjured and heavily scrutinized 7th overall pick.
Its going to be a long, long season ahead.
Why not just say that?
Because, however unlikely, it might cause dissention in the ranks and it might cause media types to scrutinize the Raiders way of doing business (Like they don't already, but why help them hurt you?)
Hard as it may be to believe, the media sometimes has a way of casting somethings Raider in a negative light.
"Oh sure, go ahead and give star treatment to a guy with 9 catches last year!"
Or,
"Bey's so fragile he can't even make it through training camp!"
The facts are, there is a very real strategy to conserving and maintaining your weaponry.
There is also a benefit to concealing your strengths and weaknesses from your competition.
Whether the media likes it or not.
I agree with your projection range.I really like Louis Murphy this season. Last year he showed me enough to leave me intrigued going into the off-season. I also like his attitude and his willingness to work, from stories and snippets I've read, he's the hardest working WR on the roster in Oakland and guys that work hard always get a bit of a bump in value because it shows that they're not merely relying on talent but trying to improve upon it. I think he's a very viable player that can give teams at least 4-5 solid starts this year and be a very solid depth player. I don't know if he'll be consistent enough to be an every week option, but he's definitely a good bye week filler or injury replacement. I got him in the 4th round of a rookie draft in July and think he has a chance to get between 800-900 yards with around 6-8 TDs.
I don't disagree with the inconsistent hands part, but really of the 34 catches, how many were circus catches where he had to use all his skill to get to the poorly thrown ball? How much of that is the mental aspect of knowing that if you have to go up late to get a ball that is poorly thrown, you are about to get creamed? You can't overstate the effect of JaMarcus Russell had on that team. It's amazing when you think about Z Miller's talent given the comic tragedy of errant passes that was the Raiders passing game last year. With accuracy comes consistency, and hard work ethic will likely make Louis Murphy one of the breakout WR's to watch this year.Murphy had 94 targets last year.....and only 34 catches. QB play can be blamed for some of it, but he has inconsistent hands, too.

Me, too. That's the intriquing thing about his prospects with the QB upgrade this year, but he still needs to catch the damn ball. His QB was the biggest bust in the history of sport. When is Schillens due to return? The thing that worries me is if/when Schilens returns Murphy will move to WR#3. Heyward-Bey will be given every chance before they put him behind Murphy.
Can someone explain me why people talk about Schilens like he's Randy Moss or something like that ?I mean Schilens, 25 yrs old, injury prone, 591yds+4td in 2 yearsMurphy, 23 yrs old, 521yds+4td as a rookieThe thing that worries me is if/when Schilens returns Murphy will move to WR#3. I don't think they talk about Chaz in those glowing terms anymore. If Murphy is being drafted near WR80, grab him. Miller will be a reception threat, but don't forget the Raiders will be a better overall team with more touchdown opportunities. I also expect DHB to catch more passes, but this will only help the passing game and Murphy.A little more info from Roto: "Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune predicts that Louis Murphy will lead the Raiders in receiving yards and touchdowns this season.McDonald foresees Zach Miller leading the club in receptions. Murphy finally has sole possession of the flanker job in Oakland, and should retain it even when (or if) Chaz Schilens (knee, ankle) returns. The ideal late-round sleeper -- especially in non-PPR leagues -- Murphy is quietly a threat for 900-1,000 receiving yards. He's light years out in front of Darrius Heyward-Bey."
