Fans Guide to NFL Labor Battle (1 Viewer)

I am convinced that there will be either a lockout or strike next season as it appears there are too many issues to work out. Our team owners have already discussed converting to a college FF league next season ...

Things are indeed looking grim and we're discussing alternatives as well. I think the rookie salary cap could end up being a bigger issue than it is currently being portrayed in comparison to the more obvious ones.

I think the squabbles between the owners might be more of a road block to a 2011 season than any they have with the players.

My concern is that each side has a new leader and each of those leaders is going to want to win this when compromise is the route that's needed.

Outstanding summary.

Here's the part that resonates with me...

How do we solve this mess?

We’re glad you asked (and glad you’re still with us after all these questions). As with most labor disputes, this is a gap that can be bridged through creativity and compromise – and, ultimately, it will come down to money and perception. The first thing that has to happen for a deal to be forged is that each side has to move past the rancorous rhetoric and intense emotion that is likely to worsen over the coming months. Certainly, this is a volatile issue that involves principle and impacts the careers and lives of numerous individuals and their families – but in the end it’s a business dispute between two entities that have it pretty good in a strained economy. If the owners and players test fan loyalties by robbing them of an entire season – or, in a worst-case scenario, dragging the dispute past the fall of 2012 – both could end up as losers.

:goodposting: Great post siggy. Thanks

First off, Excellent article. Laid out every detail for the situation.

I disagree. Its always darkest before the dawn. People have a way of finding a compromise when the clock is winding down. Right now there's so much time to get things done in the minds of both parties. A deal will be struck around March (if they want to save face before a draft) or July (Training Camp) of next year. The 18 game schedule is a forgone conclusion. Thats the key to a compromise for both sides. Owners want more game revenue. Players want more money and will use the leverage of taking on added risk of injury to get larger rosters, less mandatory mini-camps and higher minimum salary for veterans. Owners will scale back the 60% to a more "fair" number but overall more individuals will make out with more dollars. First round rookies lose out but no one cares about them it seems. Overall, common sense will prevail. The owners and the players will realize they stand to lose way more than they will gain by a lockout/strike.
