DeAngelo Williams (1 Viewer)

Anyone else having problems trying to figure this guy out from a fantasy perspective?

First I was high on him when I realized that he would be the starter and get the majority of the carries.

Then the Moore injury.

Then the realization that the Panthers aren't going to be very good and are going to be coming from behing (passing) an awful lot.

Are players like Brandon Jackson and Bradshaw in front of him now? I know it is only week 2 but I am having a really hard time trusting in him as an RB1.

I have Williams as well.

Be patient. He was the #1 RB two year ago. Williams is very talented and will get his.

I'd be looking to buy him. Here are his stats for the first 4 games last year:

14/37/1 and 4/42/0

16/79/1 and 3/32/0

11/64/0 and 2/10/0

18/40/0 and 2/19/0

Nothing spectacular. Averages around 75 combined yards a game and .5 TD's.

Carolina seems to take about 4 games for the offense to catch up to speed. I expect the first couple of games to be tough. The right side of the line is without Otah and is using MacKenzie "turnstile" Bernadeau at guard. Once Otah comes back, Schwartz (currently RT) will move to guard and be the road grader guard. I think then DW and Stewart both take off. I expect similar numbers to last year with maybe a small uptick if he plays all 16 games (no reason not to believe he won't).

:kicksrock: Now that is some good posting. Thanks.

He's a beast. Let's not forget what he did 2 years ago. He's not a Rb 1 only because of the timeshare. Talent wise he is top 5. He's gonna have weeks last last week but he is also gonna win your week some weeks. I'd reserve judgement until after this week against TB. He should put up top 5 rb stats this week. If not then it's time to re-evaluate.

He should have a monster game this week at home VS a weak team. I think the Panthers let him walk (hes a free agent next year), and they run him into the ground.

I agree that they should run him into the ground but at a certain point this year they need to determine if Stewart is going to be able to hold up physically as well. If Stewart cannot stay healthy then they must keep DWill!

Stewart is healthy right now, not on the injury report, practicing and playing.

Just traded for him and played him over Gates :-(

In it for the long haul, so he's going to do better is my thought.

He started slow last year didn't he? He'll come back!

Let's bump this thread back up. What the heck are DWill owners thinking right now? Anything other than, "OH ####"?

The QB carousel in Carolina is spinning pretty quickly right now, but for some reason they STILL don't want to run the ball...

Is Otah back? This is the one week where I have to start DWill so I am hoping he is, I think Otah is bigger part of Dwill issues than QB play.

At last recollection, Otah is still not practicing and he said it'd still be a couple weeks before he got back. I think that was last week. I think they'll try to run more, but until a QB can establish a decent passing game and get 8 out of the box, I don't expect much. You might get a game like Chicago where he breaks off a long TD because he got past the stacked front against him, but I"m not seeing anything close to last year until they can shore up the offensive line. MacKenzy Bernadeau failed at RG, so they've been trying out a couple more bodies. End of the Chicago game, they moved Schwartz inside to RG and put one of their backup tackles in at RT. Seemed a little better, but don't know what they'll be trying this week.

Start him with confidence this week. After the first quarter of the season, DeAngelo always turns it around and starts to produce big numbers.

He already had a good week 4 game, and while his numbers in week 5 were disappointing, they will find a way to make sure he gets his numbers this week.

I rarely make predictions when it comes to Panthers players, but I feel strongly that DeAngelo is going to have a big game. Matt Moore runs a ball control offense much better than Clausen was able to (partly because he can handle the snap, which Clausen can't seem to do).

I predict a huge game of 120 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.

TL;DR version: Far too much talent to dump, not producing enough currently to start him. Frustrating.

Long version: Until Otah returns, I can't get that excited about him. I haven't been forced to start him, luckily, due to Bradshaw's emergence, but I certainly expected more than the occasional flex play/bye week coverage I'm currently getting out of him.

I keep hoping that the biggest drag on his production is the lack of Otah.....but I think that may just be wishful thinking. The Panthers are terribad, so it may just be 'one of those years.'

I can't feature you can get anywhere near equal value in trade at this point, though, so he's clearly a hold for dynasty(but we all knew that). Redraft? I'd say he's still a hold for now with the shred of hope Otah's eventual return may bring.....but of course if he still struggles whenever Jeff come back then he's probably untradeable at that point.

Otah probably won't be back this week. It's looking more and more like he may not play at all this season.

I think it has more to do with the QB than Otah. He's not exactly struggling out there. He's just not getting the opportunities. I know historically, his YPC is over 5, but 4.7 isn't shabby when your passing game is doing nothing.Maybe Moore's benching woke him up and Moore can be the QB he was at the end of 2009 and the Panthers can start moving the ball.I think getting Steve Smith back will help too, whenever that is.

And what will you send me when I'm right? I've been watching DeAngelo for years, and for some reason, I just have a feeling when he's going to have a big game. This is going to be one of them.

Well, welcome me to your clique dynasty Deangelo owners! Just traded for the guy and waiting for the trade to go through. Had to give up LT and Bowe in a keeper format where we keep 6 at no cost. The former 2 weren't going to make the cut as keepers, so i think i did pretty well. Most of the people i talked to don't like the trade, but that's the whole point in buying incredible talent on the cheap. When they are cheap no one wants them!

Right now is the time to get Deangelo in dynasty formats. He can be had pretty cheap. And for all those assuming that he has done a horrible job, remember, this guy just turned 27 and barely has any mileage on those legs! Just a couple years of 200+ carries. Not to mention that in his "horrible" year so far, the guy is averaging almost 5 yards per carry. Not so bad is it? As long as a back is averaging 5 yards he is still elite in my book. The problem is with coaching, Deangelo should be getting 25 touches per game while JStew gets 20+ per game.

You can only buy low if someone's value is low. Deangelo's value is very low right now. He is the perfect buy low candidate, especially in dynasty formats but even in redraft.

You have stats to back up your "feelings"? Just curious. As a homer, I figured you would also notice that the two games Moore DID NOT play this season were DWill's best games of the season. The first two games Moore started, Williams averaged 3.9 and 3.2 ypc. If it weren't for his 29 yard run in week 1, it would have been even more pitiful.

The Panthers can't be averaging 60 plays a game with how bad they have been. That is 45+ carries you are wanting to send their way out of no more than 60 plays per game. There's a pretty decent chance, that even with you coaching the panthers, you would be playing from behind more times than not. It's just not a winning equation running more than 75% when you are getting blasted. I'm also pretty sure the opposition has a pretty good handle of the game plan when they see those two RB's and no Steve Smith either ... just stack the box and force you to throw to win. Although your way might appeal to the Deangelo and Stewart fantasy fans, you wouldn't last too long as the head coach.

Pretty weak considering he gets a turd in a box if wrong.

I think it has more to do with the QB than Otah.
I totally agree with you. Hence why I said hoping it was merely Otah being out was probably 'wishful thinking.' The real reason is the Panthers are just a bad football team and he isn't getting the opportunities that he has in the past. But I'm trying to make myself feel better. So I'm going to keep holding out hope, regardless of how slim it is, that maybe it's just Otah. :) Perhaps if Moore shows a pulse after the benching that will do the trick as well. At this point, I don't care WHAT it is, I just want it to get fixed.

Simple. Dynasty owners keep him, redraft got screwed by Richardson. They aren't trying to win. The coach is distancing himself from all decisions but won't be fired. It's over in Carolina for 2010. Get what you can for him.

Hoping to get a nice week out of him this week since I'm forced to start him because of byes. If he does have a good week I'll probably see what I can get for him. Things in Carolina don't look good.

ugh. i hoping he makes a come back. i haven't started him since week 4 starting Hillis / Turner over him since then. still trying to package him for Foster during his bye, but we'll see. probably nothing doing there.

The only stats I have is DeAngelo's history of being a slow starter. I have posted it in multiple threads and it's been mentioned in this thread as well. Williams has never performed at a high level in the early weeks of the season, regardless of who the starter is. The Panthers are coming off a bye and they are desperate. Steve Smith is injured, Matt Moore needs to get off on a good start, and they are playing against a team where they actually have a shot to win. All that will lead to the team finally doing what they should have done all along...feed the ball to DeAngelo.I'm not saying that you should start him, I'm just saying that if he was on my team, I would be starting him. He's going to blow up this week, and I'm sure of it.

For the record, I don't own DeAngelo. I typically avoid having Panthers players because they are overvalued in my league, since there are a lot of homers. I did attempt to make an offer for him last year (before he started playing well) and this year, but the owners haven't been willing to take reasonable offers.

He's right, DWill is a notoriously slow starter. I checked his game logs dating back to 2007 and he almost never has a big game prior to week 5-6. Since his bye was last week this should be the game. Good analysis.

Forced to start DWill this week. Rostered on bench since Week 1.

Have Foster & LT on Byes.

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith (ankle) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 20, reports Panthers.com.

From KFFL.

Hopefully with Smith back in the line-up, Carolina may have a few drives that are not 3 and out.

The Panthers are coming off a bye to scheme things up and have Otah coming back soon. Plus, as people have mentioned he always drives people mad until about the 6th game and then is top 10 every week.

Well, I guess a lot of people think that he will have a big game this week... in he goes into my starting lineup.

The question I have is, at what point do you just park him on the bench if he keeps under performing? Week 8? 10? When we hear Otah is not coming back? etc.

Depends on whom else you got, I in same boat as the other poster, I have LT and foster on the bye to start with CJ. So Dwill has been on the bench since week 2. But will be in my line up this week, I hope he comes back to last years numbers late in the year. You can never have enough depth.

Judging by some responses in this thread, I have to imagine DeAngelo would be a solid buy low in all formats. Y'all are talking like he is a worthless fantasy option. Despite the Panthers anemic offense, he's averaged over 70 yards from scrimmage with 4.7ypc. He is a top 10 RB talent in the league (IMO) and is in a contract year.

I don't think he will live up to his fantasy draft stock this season, but I agree with solorca - I think he is a solid start this week.

All true....and in the scoring format in which I own him that has him ranked as the 140th offensive scorer overall, on a per game basis. Among all teams in this league, 108 offensive players are starting each week. Worthless? No, but 140th overall ain't good enough for the freight that had to be paid to secure his services either. I can roll out a gaggle or WR3s, and a few TEs, that I could pick up for 'free' off the wire and outproduce him most weeks at the Flex so far(and have had to do so).I'm certainly not selling him at his current value because, as you mentioned, he's a top 10 RB talent.....but his situation isn't allowing him to do much with it at present. I do not blame him for the fact he hasn't produced. He has done pretty okay with the carries that he's received, but his offense can't keep him on the field and his defense hasn't really stopped the opposition much to get him back out there more frequently either. Were I not an owner I'd probably be looking to buy on him too, especially in dynasty, but this year I wouldn't be banking on an epic turnaround. Hopefully he proves me wrong. I'm going to need him in a couple weeks big time.
