Chargers WR Patrick Crayton Told To Shut Up By Norv Turner

Ex-Cowboys receiver Patrick Crayton, who was traded by the Cowboys just before the season, blasted his Chargers' special teams unit for not taking their jobs seriously. The Seahawks' Leon Washington ran back two kicks (101 and 99 yards) for touchdowns to help Seattle upset the the Chargers 27-20 on Sunday. "Right now, (special teams) coach (Steve) Crosby is (ticked) off. I don't blame him," Crayton said after the game. "The guys who are sitting in the meetings are not taking him seriously when he tells you to do a certain thing on a kickoff. He's been in this league I don't know how many years. He's been around a while for a reason, obviously. You have to take this stuff seriously." Responding to the critical comments, San Diego head coach Norv Turner told Crayton to stifle himself. "Patrick is new to our organization," Turner said on Monday. "And I don't think you'll hear any other comments about it from Patrick. He knows now that the way we handle things is in-house." Turner has reportedly met with the veteran receiver. "I think Patrick understands I am the spokesman in terms of how we're handling things," Turner said on Monday. Turner said he doesn't agree with Crayton's message, because if it were a problem, he would have brought it up earlier. "If he had told me that (on) Wednesday morning, and said, 'Hey, these guys aren't taking things serious, then you say, 'Hey, wait a minute,' " Turner said.

In all his years as Redskin's head coach, I've never once seen Norv Turner look like he had the capabilities to discipline a player...I think "Shut Up," is not what he said, and probably something more along the lines of "Um...excuse me, Patrick, could you please refrain from speaking please...thank you."

Crayton made the mistake of criticizing the coaching staff for not motivating the players on special teams in the national media.

Sounds kind of spot on.

But PC needs to do something in this league before taking it upon himself to speak out like that.

Hope you guys aren't insinuating that he's incapable of disciplining his players because he talks to them like people are supposed to talk to each other when they're adults?

No, we're flat out stating that he's incapable of disciplining his players because he's a weak personality who doesn't command any sort of respect. This isn't a kindergarten class, it's a football team with a bunch of immature, egotistical, muscle-heads and so a little assertiveness is necessary. Norv doesn't have that.

good that is what a coach is supposed to do. you forget Crayton has spent so long playing for the DILLIS Cowboys, he isn't used to playing for 'the team'. I think he gets a pass (and 20 wind sprints).

:lmao: Yeah, that must be it. I'm sure it would be much different if he played for that Superpower in Detroit.

And how much time exactly do you spend in the Charger's locker room each week?

Same amount as you, but I've got 7 years of 'Skins beat reporters and 'Skins players to back me up. Norv is a complete wimp as a leader. He should have stuck with being an offensive coordinator.

Call me when articles like these deal with football players acting like adults. 95% of what you read about the off-field actions of football players surely don't reflect the actions of adults.

He called Crayton out, didn't he?But you're right, he should be more like Mike Singletary...0-3.Tom Coughlin may be looking for a job in 2011...with a recent Super Bowl ring on his hand. His way of doing things worked a couple of years ago, why not now? Just like 40 times, a coach's style get more attention than it deserves.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I just question "statement of fact" on things like this, that only insiders would know. These statements happen a lot around here.

Ah, the discredited method of going to the other extreme to make a point. The Strawman building strawmen, as it were. Where did I say that being tough guaranteed wins? Hint: I didn't. Running a football team like Clark Kent doesn't cut it either though, and moreover wouldn't appear to give much of a chance of success at all. Who are the most respected and successful coaches currently in the league? By my count, Belichick; Tomlin; Shanahan; Payton; Fisher; Reid. Recent such coaches no longer in the league include Cowher; Schottenheimer; Parcells; Gibbs; Walsh; Levy; Shula; Holmgren; Dungy; Reeves (arguably); and Ditka (arguably). Guys who don't (yet) have the resume but who I regard as "up and comers" include Mike Smith; Harbaugh; Ryan; and Schwartz. I might have left out one or two that I'd include upon further reflection. What's the common trait? These guys are hard-asses who are unquestionably the leaders of their team. None of those guys had any problem with getting in the face of anyone who crossed them. If they did, they're gone. The only remotely mild personalities on that list are Dungy and Reid, but Reid's had plenty of strong personalities and the way he managed the TO situation tells you he won't back down either. Dungy had a quieter persona but I don't recall any player getting out of line under him - like Gibbs he kept his firm leadership within the lockerroom, but also like Gibbs his focus was unquestioned. Norv is a complete ##### cat related to every one of those guys. He inherited a very good team and even managed to win a playoff game or two with it, not coincidentally as first Brees then Rivers emerged as good QB's. Ultimately though, aside from his contributions as an OC, he's a warm body.
