Nnamdi Asomugha vs SD (1 Viewer)

I would have to believe Gates. Force Lloyd & Nanee to beat them, but as good as Aso is I still think Gates is a mismatch for him.

I think they keep him on his side of the field. I dont think he can cover gates. Denver often tried Champ on Gates
I have a hard time seeing him cover one wr specifically since they arent near the threat gates is. If he is one of the covers that stays on one side all the time then he could possibly be on nannee all game. Doesnt sound like a good plan for oakland...

It's never a bad idea to pretty much take away an entire side of the field...

In the redzone he should cover Gates. I have watched all of Gates TD receptions and they are against zone D. He just shreds it. No one is jamming him at the LOS. He runs free and finds a gap.

The odds of beating SD without covering Gates in the redzone is very small.

Oak has traditionally just left Nnamdi on one side of the field, it has been rare for them to have him matchup vs a particular player. Not saying its a good move, its just their MO

In the Nnamdi vs. Champ comparison threads where people were comparing the number of times each was thrown against, one of the criticisms Nnamdi always got was that Champ was covering the other teams best WR a lot more often since he would follow him around the field, whereas Nnamdi was more likely to just stay on his side of the field and cover whoever lined up there.

I remember in the last debate, people were remarking that that was starting to change a bit, and Nnamdi was starting to move around the field more.

I don't know where that stands now (I try to avoid watching Oakland games), but if things are the same as they've been in the past than he would probably not cover Gates very often, if at all.

I haven't seen much of the Raiders games this year but wasn't there a lot of talk in the preseason that they were changing that this year.

Denver was effective shutting Gates down when they'd double team him with Bailey and an LB. I don't think you can expect to stop Gates one on one regardless of who the individual defender is - he's a mismatch no matter what.Beyond that, the Raiders are one of the worst run Ds in the league - this could be a big week for Matthews and Tolbert, with the passing game taking a back seat for once.

Haven't watched every play of the Raiders games, but did some digging into this....It seemed the first 2 games (Ten, Stl) he covered his usual side of the field. However against Arizona, I believe he followed Fitz. Week 4 against houston I believe I read that he went back to his usual side since AJ didn't play, but I didn't see enough of the game to say one way or the other.

So to me it, seems that it's dependent upon the quality of the other teams WR1. If he's a gamechanger, ie. Fitz, it looks like Oakland will have Nnamdi follow, otherwise, it's his usual side.

Not what i wanted to hear as a Rivers/Floyd owner...The good news is Oak has the ability to put up some points unlike lame arizona last week so there is always hope...

One guy can't "jam" Gates. He'll bust through it and be off to the races. He will kill again unless he's doubled/tripled.
I would hope Oakland watched tapes of last weeks game between SD and Arizona on what NOT to do against gates. I could see him having the same effect with Oakland being more concerned with the WR's.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but traditionally Asomough lines up as the LCB, and Floyd lines up on the right side of the formation in their base sets. That puts them squaring off on most plays, and leaving Legadu Naanee against Chris Johnson or whoever the Raiders are running out there right now.

No historical precedent for Aso covering Gates...I wouldnt try to gameplan around it.

I'd start Gates as the #1 TE overall this week.

Floyd and Naanee both as deep-league WR4/Flex options. I like Naanee to have the better game, but both stand a decent chance of being held under 60 yards.

Without WR Vincent Jackson the Chargers think Raider CB Nnamdi Asomugha may shadow TE Antonio Gates more in this match up. Makes sense on paper and Nnamdi's certainly covered him many times throughout the years but it’s really not a great idea. Nnamdi doesn't fare well against top notch TE's and was burned badly by former KC Chief Tony Gonzales before he was traded to Atlanta.

No matter what, Gates will shred the Raiders as he always does. They would be better off shutting down floyd and hoping that buster davis doesn't capitalize in the slot while the LBs are cheating towards gates.

Floyd and nannee were pretty much shutout last game, didnt seem to affect the scoring much for SD...

I can vouch that he covered Fitz the whole game. I was at the game and pretty much checked every snap to see who was on Fitz. I know on Fitz's first reception Fitz was lined up on the left side and someone else covered him. I'm not sure about the TD, but I would say for 95% of the plays he was guarded by Asomugha.

I read the papers after the AZ game and they said that while Aso was covering Fitz he gave up one reception for 18 yds I believe. The TD was while they were in a zone.

I really think someone else was on him when he caught that 18 yarder because I remember thinking "Oh, well of course he caught a ball because 21 was not around him." I might be wrong though - my seats are pretty high up...

the TD did come in zone coverage.when Fitz shifted to the slot, Aso followed him until the snap, when fitzy broke inside toward the GL and sat down in the zone and Aso dropped off in short zone coverage on the outside.

It's the raiders. He'll line up on the same side he always lines up on. DRAT that the other team doesn't fall for that gambit! BAastards!
