2011 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

With the labor uncertainty, there are more unanswered questions entering the summer than usual. The good news is that gives us some more time to discuss the merits of players without having to react (or overreact) to the smallest bits of news about a slight injury in practice, or coach speak. We'll have plenty of time for that when it comes (we hope).

In the meantime, as always we will post a list of players to be discussed each week. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discuss expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Reggie Wayne, WR, Indianapolis Colts

Player Page Link: Reggie Wayne Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or  ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Reggie Wayne probably doesn't get the credit he deserves as a NFL wide receiver. The guy plays 16 games just about every season that has counted for him and has made spectacular plays on one of the most prolific offenses the NFL has seen in the last decade. He's been a reception machine the past couple of season catching nearly 225 during that time span but yet most people expect a decline in Reggie's numbers, even though the Colts still don't haven't invested anything substantial in an improved running game. I think Reggie still has it and represents a solid draft pick this upcoming season. Reggie isn't a "sexy" pick anymore, but he'll give you consistent numbers during the course of a season and that's worth something.

102 passes, 1180 yards and 7 Td's

It shocking how little attention Wayne has received, although I think it's also a testament to his quiet consistency. He's at the point in his career where he's never perceived as THE best potential fantasy wideout, but he's also a guy that someone in your league is going to happily draft as their top option, and generally be rewarded for the choice. The Peyton Manning surgery is a modest concern, because I can't fathom any Colts receiver producing at their normal level without him, but all reports (and his history) suggest Manning will be on the field. So long as that's the case, Wayne should be comfortably in everyone's Top 10, and a Top 5 consideration in PPR formats.

He currently has an ADP of 26. That's a great place to grab him in a 12 team redraft. I would be happy as a clam with a Peterson/Manning/Wayne start.

1300/9

It is hard to get excited about a guy that has seen his ypr drop every year for the last four years. He only managed 1355/6 during a year in which his QB threw the ball an amazing 680 times! That is almost 100 times more than his career high. Considering that number has to come down and Reggie's ypr situation (starting in 2006 his ypr is as follows: 15.2, 14.5, 14.0, 12.6, 12.2), there isn't a whole lot to get excited about for a guy who is going to cost you a WR8 price tag. He has finished #6 and #7 the last two years, but given the aforementioned notes, you've gotta feel like you are drafting a guy at his ceiling when drafting him at WR8.That being said, I won't be distraught if I end up with Wayne on my team. I don't plan to own him, but if that's the way the cards fall, that's fine. He'll likely end up between WR8-WR12. He's no longer got any upside allure, but he'll hold down his position on your team.

In a PPR league, he still has a ton of value. Thee of his last four seasons have been with 100+ receptions and he finished WR3 in terms of total points and WR6 in points per game. I'm not convinced that he's a lost a signifcant step as his career ypc has been all over the place anyway, but he's still a top five WR in PPR formats. Non-PPR, he loses some luster as his TD production has never been particularly strong given the amount of receptions he gets, but as an early third rounder, he's a steal given that he has one of the highest floors out there.

102 receptions, 1350 yds, 8 TD

So with Peyton looking even more questionable for starting the season how far do we drop him? I did have ranked 7th, but now I'm thinking possibly all the way down to 15.

He also has not done much to endear himself to his possible new QB. I know in the heat of the game, that matters little, but Collins (or whoever starts) owes little to Wayne and does not necessarily view him as the clutch guy (as Manning would).

Even IF I was assured Peyon would start the first game, I'd drop down Wayne to the #12-#13 range as we have no idea how effective Peyton will be. If Peyton misses multiple games, I'd only draft Wayne as a high end WR3, so he'd be in the #20-#22 range.Collins is not a good fit behind that Indy offensive line.

I love Reggie Wayne, but his skills have declined over the past 2 years. I know the numbers don't bear that out, but you have to consider that, with Dallas Clark out and an ineffective running game, the offense really focused on forcing short passes to Reggie Wayne. With Clark back, the hopes of a slightly improved running game, and serious questions at QB, Wayne won't get anywhere near his customary numbers.

90 Rec, 1050 yards, 7 TD's

At his ADP, I am avoiding Wayne this year.

He's seems to have lost a step, and doesn't get as wide open as he used to.

Manning is very likely to miss one game, and maybe more.

Wayne has to compete with Collie, Garcon, D Clark and Addai for receptions.

I just don't see any upside with Wayne this year. While he will still have a solid year, I would rather take a guy like Vincent Jackson or Mike Wallace or Miles Austin who all could have really big years.

85 rec, 1075 yards, 7TD
