2011 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

With the labor uncertainty, there are more unanswered questions entering the summer than usual. The good news is that gives us some more time to discuss the merits of players without having to react (or overreact) to the smallest bits of news about a slight injury in practice, or coach speak. We'll have plenty of time for that when it comes (we hope).

In the meantime, as always we will post a list of players to be discussed each week. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discuss expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings

Player Page Link: Adrian Peterson Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or  ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Vikings will rely on the run heavily this year. If they sign someone like McNabb - even better for AP. I am expecting big things this year.

318/1557/19

38/302/1

So difficult to predict AP's stats at this point with so much up in the air regarding free agency. If they don't bring in a McNabb at QB, and lose Rice in free agency, it could be a long season for the Viking offense. On the other hand, McNabb + Rice probably means a prolific offense where Peterson could reach 15+ TDs. At this point, I'd say the odds favor them not making a QB move, and losing Rice. I think we'll see Ponder sooner rather than later, and just about each of Peterson's stats (except carries) will take a hit.

330 carries x 4.1 ypc = 1353 yards, 10 total TDs

MIN would be dumb not to try and bring in a McNabb or try and trade for Orton. They can't just trot out Ponder as a rookie.

If they do bring in a solid veteran QB, Peterson will have another huge year.

320 car, 1425 yards, 14 TD

35 rec, 275 yards, 1 TD

The player page link directs you to the wrong Adrian Peterson.
At least it's not Chester Taylor.285/1160/6 40/390/1Tough year for him. Tough year for the Minny offense.
I agree. Problem number one is a balanced offense. You're not going to see it with Kolb, McNabb, Ponder, Webb. or some other popular FA. A FA QB in year one of a new offense, coaches, and less time to work on it all because of the lockout is not a recipe for success. Then the Viking's O-line is just bad at run blocking. I don't think that it'd take a ton for them to be competitive and make AD the #1RB, but unless a few guys make massive leaps in skill then it's just not going to happen with the status quo. On top of all that the NFC North defenses look TOUGH. It's going to be hard sledding all year long.

Minnesota will rely heavily on their best offensive player, Adrian Peterson. The rest of the team, we're not so sure on but Peterson will get his. Toby Gerhart may vulture a few Tds away from the heavily used Peterson in the upcoming season.

1200 yards, 10 Tds

38 receptions, 400 yards and 1 Td

It seems a lot of people are down on ADP as if he wasn't good before 2009. The Vikings ran the ball more before Favre & ADP benefited from it. To me he's one of the safest RBs.

Right he's the safest RB out there, but this isn't the same team. Most noticeable is the O-line. Hutch is getting old, McKinnie is regressing/getting old, and Birk moved on while Sullivan hasn't exactly filled his shoes. I'm still not sure what to expect from Sully and since he had lower body injuries most of last year it's hard to say exactly what he can do with a bit of time under his belt and some continuity. I see him as a very smart guy that can call out the protections and provide good pass blocking but I just don't see him a road grating run blocker.

Career high in TDs might be a reach, unless he scores all of Minnesota's offensive touchdowns.

True. But this guy is too damn good. Go back and look at LT's 5th year in the league and name me an offensive lineman that is close to Hutch, even at this stage in his career. Dielman was solid and thats about it. But LT's best season's were 5-7 with an OK line at best. RB's of this caliber still get better, even in year 5. AP is a buy low(er) candidate for me in any league I can try to pry him away.

One of the safer bets in FF. Probably won't be #1, but probably will be 2-5. Tough to predict numbers until other positions on the team are determined. If I had the #1 selection, I would take Peterson.

Beast.

Exactly. Larry Johnson is to Ladainian Tomlinson as Arian Foster is to Adrian Peterson.

Is it me, or does AP's schedule look REALLY easy this season?

Seems like he could have a monster season facing the NFC and AFC West, but i haven't heard much chatter about it being a huge plus.

Haven;t owned him since his rookie season, am I missing something? Is his O-line that bad?
