2011 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

With the labor uncertainty, there are more unanswered questions entering the summer than usual. The good news is that gives us some more time to discuss the merits of players without having to react (or overreact) to the smallest bits of news about a slight injury in practice, or coach speak. We'll have plenty of time for that when it comes (we hope).

In the meantime, as always we will post a list of players to be discussed each week. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discuss expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Sidney Rice, WR, Seattle Seahawks

Player Page Link: Sidney Rice Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or  ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Rice had the growing pains expected from a WR entering the NFL. He showed promise as a rookie but was not a fantasy force. The sophomore slump would provide a synopsis of his 2nd season. His emergence in his 3rd year had as much to do with Favre as it did with his development but we were shown what he was capable of. Just about everyone on the entire Minny team suffered through a disappointing season last year but Rice being able to maintain a high average per reception is enough to demonstrate that he is capable of rebounding.

It must be the Seattle weather that has so negatively affected many of the WR’s that have played there. The transition for Rice should be minimized by having the familiarity he already has with T. Jackson, who at the moment appears to be the opening day starter. I am not touting Jackson as the 2nd coming of Favre by any means but the shared experiences of these two players will give Rice the lead over the other WR’s for becoming the primary weapon of choice. During the transition year I could see there still being a close split between Rice and Big Mike (if there is no backslide) making it so that neither will be ideal fantasy prospects but solid contributors none the less.

75 receptions for just under/right at 1,000 yards with 8 tds.

If the running game becomes solid the td's might go down but I am not sold yet on Lynch so I suspect there may be more reception tds available.

It's just the first game of the pre-season, but Rice didn't play and TJax looked terrible. Any comments on what people think about Rice this year with his new team?

We should be discussing how they'll do with Luck next year. I cannot figure any other reason why they wanted T.Jackson this season.
Not sure exactly what this means. It's pure pie in sky speculation.Dealing with the here and now, I think TJax is a joke, and I am shockedthat Seattle decided not to look elsewhere for QB help.

1) The lack of training camp and he knows the system better than any Free Agent2) They are taking flyers on a few young QBs...if it pans out..great. otherwise they are set to draft an ELITE QB from next years draft. They could finish 7-9 with an aging vet but they want to get younger, and whats the point? They are building the team, then getting the QB of the future.Prety simple to see why they didnt look elsewhere.

Seattle is a headless horseman...a rudderless ship....whatever analogy floats--or in this case for Rice, sinks your boat.

105 targets, 52 rec - 700yds - 5 td.

love the talent, hate the opportunity.

Sidney Rice possibly has torn labrumPosted by Mike Florio on September 18, 2011, 12:54 PM EDT APThe centerpiece of the Seahawks’ free-agent class will remain in the cabinet for the foreseeable future.A shoulder injury has kept receiver Sidney Rice out of the first two games of the 2011 season, and Jay Glazer of FOX reports that it’s believed Rice has a torn labrum. If so, Rice may eventually need surgery. Which could mean that the Seahawks won’t get much of a return on their investment in Rice this year.
