Much like the Vikings, the Rams WR position is wide open. However, they have maybe a little more upside long term and for this season. With Bradford running the offense and Josh Mac calling the shots the sky is the limit for these guys. There D will likely be average-to-poor again so they may be playing catch up quite a bit. So who is going to take the cake?

Figured we should start a thread to track this info. May be helpful cause a couple of these guys could end up really making a difference for fantasy squads. The problem is there are so many to choose from

Sims-Walker: huge upside, injury concerns, working with 2's?

Danario: Same as above, running with 1's?

Avery: Same as above, working with 2's

Brandon Gibson: running with the 1's and positive reports so far

Pettis: reports say he's looked good, but nobody on the national scene seems to be talking about him http://www.turfshowtimes.com/2011/8/6/2347612/st-louis-rams-training-camp

Salas: FBG favorite but he's been stalled by hammy

Amendola: PPR slot machine, we'll he maintain his position with the competition?

figured a thread tracking any news about them would be beneficial. I'd get it started with Pettis report above...

 
Currently I love Alexander's ADP, which is very low. Amendola is going a bit higher and isn't the TD threat that Alexander is but he's s safe bet for recpetions so he's still value in PPR formats.

Sims Walker is probably the most physical WR and is definitely a projection given the short amount of time he'll be given to gain favor...he is more of a long term play.

Gibson is running with the 1s but he's probably got the most competition, namely from Avery.

 
They have a bunch of 3rd WRs who are all about equal in talent. Football wise I think Salas is my favorite of them. But for fantasy I would go with Amandola.

 
Whoa - I must have missed something. I thought Clayton was the favorite for #1 - now he's not on the team? Can someone fill me in on what I missed please?

Clayton should have signed anything he could last year. He and Sam....he suddenly had a career.

Generally, in this situation, we'll see several groups working with the starters until the team decides upon starters.It's far too early to read into anything.

They do have a young QB- timing and an almost trust has to be established if they're going to be special this year. Bradford is super impressive, but they can't push their luck here or he'll accidentally throw a bunch of INTs to start the year. He has to develop some with these WRs.

Amendola's rapport with Bradford, IMO, makes him more of a sure thing than anyone. Plus he was excellent in the slot so I don't see a pressing need to replace him either.

Re outside WRs-they've gotta work this out in camp, with the competition and all.

Danario needed to step his game up to be a star and now, he must do it if he wants to play. I think that's a good competition type thing.

Sims-Walker has to practice and be someone they can count on.

Avery was impressive at times when they were a bad team. I really think he is likely better than we imagine in FF, while others seem to think he was the best of a bad group and will be left in the dust now. He's got a knack for catching the DB sleeping and getting open deep. At times, McDaniels' O has seemed too methodical and lacked the back breaking big play. I think Danario and Avery may get a little extra love because of their big play ability.

 
Was desperate for some info on these guys and went digging last night. According to fan reports from viewing practice, I was able to gather that

1) Clayton will likely not be resigned, and many fans a pissed about that.

2) Gibson impressing and making good use of FAs not being there.

3) MSW called best WR on roster by one fan, but haven't heard much otherwise.

4) Salas playing very well and determined, fan favorite to take Amendola's slot.

5) Amendola being scrappy as always.

6) Avery nicked again and some are beginning to write him off.

7) Alexander not garnering much to comment on other than the typical "sleeper," and "could blow up."

8) Pettis doing very well, but nothing spectacular.

9) Gilyard sounds completely forgotten though someone did say that he could surprise and take a vet's job.

Nothing concrete, or any more than fanboy regurgitation but it's better than nothing for a group that should turn out a couple of fantasy gems. Oh, and Kendricks has been killing it from everything I hear. All-in-all, sounds like fluff and gushing to me and I'd love for some more input to what I think will be one of the premier passing teams over the next decade.

if they are really going at it, this is expected as he truly goes into a football shape and not into what someone simply calls football shape by working out in a gym.People beginning to write him off is also expected.It's just how it goes.We will probably do this dance with MSW too.
 
It was definitely Mark. I heard it amidst the Andre Brown returning discussion and the announcers were discussing both Claytons.

Granted if I were Clayton's agent, talking to the Giants might get Spags attention most of all, but...definitely they were talking about Mark.

Michael Clayton signed with the Giants. Mark Clayton is still out there...Giants agreed to terms with WR Michael Clayton.Yes, this is the same Michael Clayton that starred for the Bucs as a rookie in 2004 and then bottomed out in the UFL last year. He did appear in six games for the Giants at the end of last season, catching two balls. We don't expect him to be more than a camp body, even if free agent Steve Smith (knee) isn't retained. Aug 2, 12:25 PMCoach Steve Spagnuolo indicated Saturday that free agent WR Mark Clayton's surgically repaired knee is "not ready yet."It's hard to imagine Clayton and his agent looking kindly on Spags' revelation. We haven't seen the quote in context yet, so perhaps the Rams are still considering Clayton once his knee checks out. At this point, we wouldn't expect to see him sign elsewhere any time soon. I think that the top three receivers to own in this offense will be Alexander, Avery and Amendola. MSW is lazy and won't live up to potential. Alexander has the size to be the jump-ball threat in the end zone, Avery has the speed to be the deep burner and Amendola runs crisp routes from the slot.

Avery has done nothing so far to warrant any optimism at this point.MSW has a 1 year deal to prove something. I call that motivation.Gibson may me the sleeper here. He might make the Rams pass on Clayton when he is healthy enough to pass a physical.

I don't understand why he's not getting more love...I realize the picture is somewhat cloudy, but Alexander has demonstratd upside...just look at his gamelog. More importantly he passes the eyeball test. Lastly, he's currently running as the #1.Value city...kid has a ceiling around 80/1250/10 and he's not getting any love...stole him in an FFCP draft in round 14 two days ago.

The risk/reward ratio here is awesome IMHO.

Also amendola isn't at all special, just the guy that stayed healthy last year. His YPC is horrible. The TEs and roookie WRs will eat into his touches a lot.

Because the guy had like 5 knee surgeries in college. I love his size, speed, and ability, but if his knees don't hold up it doesn't matter....

(RotoWire) Amendola had eight receptions for 70 yards and one touchdown during the Rams' inner-squad scrimmage on Sunday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Analysis: Amendola continues to be one of Sam Bradford's favorite targets. The diminutive wideout is almost guaranteed the slot receiver job barring any injuries and is a nice sleeper pick in most fantasy leagues.

Alexander is the one receiver in STL with a realistic chance of being a fantasy stud and if he's healthy, I don't think there's any way he doesn't start and produce at a WR1 level. But this blurb from the above article is not encouraging:

"Danario Alexander returned to practice Tuesday after missing several days with swelling in his left knee. "A little swelling; it's going to do that," Alexander said. "It's my first time going through a (full) training camp. So it's just a lot of pounding and stuff like that — it just swells up on me a little bit."

Alexander is the one receiver in STL with a realistic chance of being a fantasy stud and if he's healthy, I don't think there's any way he doesn't start and produce at a WR1 level. But this blurb from the above article is not encouraging:

I strongly disagree that he's the only one that can emerge. Mike Sims-Walker has shown just as much potential and he doesn't seem quite as injury prone

I'm shocked there's so much positive talk about Gibson in TC. I had him on my roster from after his first game w/ Stl (he had like 6 grabs for 90 yds) up until a week or two ago... and I haven't seen anything very impressive with him. His catch % doesn't seem very good, he doesn't seem explosive at all with a YPC of 11... I figured he'd be on the cutting block.

Agreed. Would the Rams really keep 7 receivers, or does Gibson sticking around assume one of Avery, Alexander, or MSW get cut? Amendola and the 2 rookies are locks.

Was on a one year contract last season.Started hot.Blew out his knee.Hasn't been signed back by the Rams (or by anyone else) and reports indicate he's behind in his recovery.

Never thought I would hear that! lolAgree that Alexander and MSW are the targets for home-run hitters, and Gibson seems to be pretty cheap as well.

 
Great idea for a thread ....If anyone has a clue on this situation they are a better man than me. I was extremely confident before the past week or so that avery was gonna be the guy, as of now im not so sure anymore. :shrug:

I just wish I could be at camp with them right now........................................

I'm shocked too. I have him in a deep dynasty team along with DX and Salas hoping one or two pans out to be something and was looking for any reason to drop him but as deep as the league is, all made up of sharks from here, I never got around to cutting him. Now all the news out of TC is he's been with the 1st team since about day one. I didn't see it coming at all...

8 receivers... You've got Gilyard in the mix too. He was supposedly having a pretty good camp until he got his bell rung (or something) yesterday. "St. Louis Rams second-year WR Mardy Gilyard (undisclosed) has had a solid start during training camp. He saw some first-string reps at slot receiver while WR Danny Amendola was not allowed to practice due to post-lockout rules. He had to be helped off the field by the team's training staff Tuesday, Aug. 9, and head coach Steve Spagnuolo said Gilyard was having trouble seeing. He wasn't sure if Gilyard was suffering from migraines.

So, 8 WRs, 9 if you count Gilyard, 10 if you count Clayton at some point. And 6 will be kept. But it's not as simple as assuming the leftovers get cut.

Let's not forget... they have a lot of guys because there are a lot of guys with injury histories, and there's a month before the season starts. A lot of shaking out to go. Maybe Danario's knee can'y go and they stash him on PUP. And/or, Clayton can be signed and go on PUP, buying more time. Meantime, maybe one or more of the others goes down with injury before he comes off. I'd be almost willing to bet that Salas or Pettis gets some phantom injury at the end of preseason and gets stashed on injured reserve. Gilyard likely goes onto the practice squad. It'll all shake out, most likely, without anyone having to be cut. I agree with some of the posters above that Gibson is probably the least talented, but he just keeps showing up and getting the job done, and for a team snakebitten by injuries that probably means a lot.

 
As far as I can tell, it's an all out royal rumble camp battle and anyone can win it if they show they can earn it and stay healthy at the same time. Currently, based on everything I've been reading, Gibson is winning that battle. Therefore, my money's on him........Until the winds blows, then I'll be changing my mind completely.

 
Brandon Gibson has been running as a starter since Rams training camp began.Highly inconsistent to this point in his career, Gibson has reportedly showed an "improved attitude and work ethic," and looks to have locked up a roster spot at the very least. For what it's worth, the Rams' SB Nation blog TurfShowTimes.com predicts that St. Louis' starting receivers will be Gibson and Danny Amendola, with Mike Sims-Walker entering for all three-wide sets.

Danario Alexander was forced to sit out several days of practice recently due to swelling in his left knee.Alexander was back in practice Tuesday, but it's a reminder that knee problems are going to hang over his head. "It's my first time going through a (full) training camp. So it's just a lot of pounding and stuff like that it just swells up on me a little bit," Alexander said. If healthy, he has the potential to be the best receiver on the Rams and he remains a worthwhile flier in all fantasy formats.

Just read this, A bit surprising.I didnt expect him to get cut, but I also didnt think he was holding onto his job.
