Who Is Phillip Tanner? (1 Viewer)

Players like Tanner, Moore, Mike Wallace, and others have taught to me is that creating a second score to track potential upside would be a good analysis in future Rookie Scouting Portfolio publications. I’m going to begin giving two grades. The first will be the actual grade of the player’s performance. The second will be that player’s upside grade. This grade will account for skills that a player flashed during his performance, but didn’t show consistently to warrant a positive score in those areas.

I’ve frequently done this as a part of my analysis in the past while compiling rankings, but I haven’t listed the second grade. I think it will be telling to do so.

That was a nice run last night without a helmet. The guy didn't even think about bailing out after his helmet fell off. That showed me he is fearless. I will definately be keeping tabs on him.

I've got a deeeep dynasty league that I just picked Tanner up in. Funny thing is I had been waiting for him to show up on MFL for a week or two. Nice write-up, and interesting stuff, I feel validated.

Bump w/Jones high ankle sprain and possibility that Choice is traded.
I think this guy could be a BIG surprise in Dallas. I'm holding him in both my big dynasty leagues, hoping he shows something.
I own Jones in a few leagues and have avoided picking up Choice or Murray because I thought if Jones went out for an extended period of time Tanner might end up the biggest winner. Unfortunately for me, I guess we will find out.

i love your constant. it's saved so much of my youtube time.

they will not trade Choice - why let two rookies be the last line of defense for Romo . . .

it won't happen . . .

I really appreciate the work your putting in Matt, I'm learning quite a bit from you. Thanks. I have noticed a couple of typos in the article, ie 2 of the last 3 paragraphs. Not a big deal, just thought you might want to clean them up for the sake of presentation. The notion of grading on potential is interesting, although it's difficult to really gauge a player's "it" factor in many cases. I'm becoming a filmroom junky myself, but my habit isn't as bad as yours yet. I can fathom the time and effort you put in, so I'm a bit hesitant to question why you don't expand your scouting analysis into the NFL preseason and even early years of a players career. What you do now is impressive, but imagine a portfolio that includes breakdowns of players in NFL games especially early in their careers. Watching college film you probably see a trend of huge leaps from junior to senior year tape and there is a similar thing that happens at certain points in many players' 1st, 2nd, 3rd years in the pros. I know it's a big task to follow all the players, but perhaps beginning by following a dozen or so players closely for a couple years as they transition from NCAA to NFL games might be possible. I for one would be interested to get your formal take on players as they transition. Players get better and dissecting that transition period more closely will help improve future evaluations.

Thanks. email me what you found.

With Choice still on the team, does Tanner have any chance to make an impact this year, or next?
DeMarco is the guy here, Tanner may end up #2 at some point unless he can unseat DeMarco.

I picked up Tanner in all leagues, once he gets his shot it will be too late, as he will go for large BB dollars. Now is the time to stash imo.

Well, obviously the Cowboys were running all over the Rams at will, and Murray had a huge game.

But Tanner quietly had his first carries, and first TD, of his career.

6 carries, 34 yards, 1 TD. Not bad, in mop-up duty.

Anyone who was able to watch the game, how'd he actually look?

He looked pretty good, especially on a couple runs. On the touchdown run, he took an early hit and pushed about 2-3 defenders toward the goal line. He made a nice stretch out to get the TD. He also had another good run where he broke a tackle or two for a 10+ yard gain.Other than that, he looked solid. He certainly didn't show the same kind of burst as Murray, but he didn't have the opportunity to do so. I think this kid definitely has potential, and if Choice is out next week, he should get plenty of action.

Phillip Tanner is looking like a very sneaky play this week. Jones is out, Choice might be out and should be limited if he plays, Philly is a nice match for RBs. There is a lot of upside in this situation even if it is just for one week.

:goodposting: I think the biggest thing holding most dynasty players back is time. I don't think the average owner has the time it takes to be informed on most NFL players. A RSP style write up for young players would be very valuable to me personally, and I would think I speak for most. If not a huge project like the RSP, maybe something weekly highlighting a handful of players. Updates to the RSP for guys like Ridley, Moore, Decker and the countless other young players who show promise, but have yet to establish themselves. A recap of what you saw in college that translated, what didn't, and what you see on an NFL level that they didn't display in college. Or maybe something for the young players who are struggling. Is Ingram going to have a Matthews like bump in value soon. Is Lance Kendricks getting open and not getting the ball, or struggling off the line - why isn't he performing at the level most projected? I think this would be immensely valuable.

Choice is out from what I've read. Looks like Tanner is going to get some carries.

I just posted this in a very old Topic.

Murrey may just be that guy, but help me if there are others...

Ridley - BJGE a little banged up, could have turf toe, admitted playing hurt... Ridley was the feature back on the first drive, giving way to fellow rookie Shane Vereen on just one snap. From the second quarter on, though, Ridley was limited to kickoff returns with BenJarvus Green-Ellis taking over as the lead back.

Tanner - Jones & Choice a little banged up, Murrey ahead of him, but 1 or 2 fumbles or injury... Coach Jason Garrett was pleased with Phillip Tanner's performance in garbage time against the Rams last week. "He did a real nice job," Garrett said. "You guys have heard me talk about guys taking advantage of the opportunities they get and Phillip has done that since Day One. ... We handed him the ball six times yesterday and he was productive with that." With Tashard Choice (shoulder) banged up, Tanner could move up to No. 2 on the depth chart for this week's game against the Eagles.

Hunter - Gore playing well, but he has already surpassed half of the carries he had last year in six games. While this might be great for a second or third year man, Gore is no spring chicken. The trend will not continue or the wheels will fall off the bus.

Ivory - Ingram a little banged up, Thomas meh, Sproles situational... Ivory came in last year and did what we're looking for this year.
Cowboys waived RB Tashard Choice.BUMP

Impressions from the Eagles game? The boys were behind so far so quick that I don't think we can draw any conclusions. Anyone see otherwise?

Jones might return to practice this week. If he does, my guess is the Cowboys will go with Murray as the primary RB and Jones as the third-down/change-of-pace RB. I wouldn't expect Tanner to be anything more than a depth guy. He's worth the roster spot in larger leagues but I don't see him having any present value in smaller leagues or ones with tight roster limits. I would expect Murray and Jones to clearly be the primary RBs moving forward barring injury.

Interesting take from Waldman from a while back.A lot of time has passed so maybe some of those deficiencies have improved?

Tanner scored a 69 on my checklist, but there were a lot of areas that I didn’t see Tanner demonstrate consistently that he at least flashed: Pad level. Carrying the ball under the correct arm. Balance when hit from an indirect angle. Decision-making at the line of scrimmage with the blocking scheme. Hand placement and footwork as a stand up blocker. If Tanner has or eventually does address these issues and performs the with greater consistency, his upside grade on my checklist would have been 20 points higher. A player with “89″ potential on a 100-point scale is in starter territory. I still want to see more from Tanner before I can conclude that he has this kind of upside sooner than later. However, he’s a player to watch closely and seriously consider for a roster spot somewhere, if not in Dallas.

Garrett said Jones and Tanner will split the running back duties with Lance Dunbar serving as a “pinch hitter” because a three-man rotation does not allow the top two backs to get into the flow of a game.
http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4699610/how-much-work-can-felix-jones-handleI'd say understanding the nature and length of Murray's injury is really important right now.Is he out for a week or for much longer? Because if it's much longer....

(FFToday)DeMarco Murray underwent tests Monday on his injured foot, but the results of the tests are still unknown. Murray was unable to play this last week and coach Jason Garrett said he is uncertain if Murray will be able to practice Wednesday. "We'll wait and see on that," Garrett said. "We're certainly optimistic. He's proven to be someone who heals quickly. We'll monitor him day by day, but we'll have to wait and see." Murray's backup, Felix Jones sprained his knee against the Panthers on Sunday.

Analysis: With Murray likely out and Jones a question mark for Sunday, Phillip Tanner looks to get touches Sunday against the Giants. Murray is a must start if he plays Sunday. The last time the injured running back played against the Giants was the first game of the NFL season, when he rushed for 131 yards-his only 100 yard game of the year.

I'm thinking about grabbing him instead of picking up a kicker. MY kicker is on bye and since DeMarco is out, I might just have to grab Tanner and roll without a K
