Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
Might as well see if the kid has improved at all.

Collins is dreadful, as expected. At home -- against the Browns. Before the final Colts drive (when they were down 27-12 and Cleveland went into a prevent defense with 2:00 left), Collins was 11-26 for 103 with 1 INT and 1 lost fumble. I hope Polian won't let Kerry's $4M contract dictate playing time.

Game 4 in the preseason next yr. Starts and ends there as well.
I respectfully disagree, UNLESS the Colts know Painter actually gives them a better chance to win, and they privately don't want that.Curtis Painter looked pretty damn good (for Curtis Painter) at times this preseason.

I don't know why Collins was signed in the first place.

He is a statue and this offense is based on timing and having some touch on the ball.

Collins has a laser beam and zero touch. He also has no athleticism to make up for his slow delivery. He was awful last year, and I don't see what Polian figured he had left in the tank?

Manning has been hiding a lot of this teams faults for a long time.

This situation just boggles my mind. Collins is horrible. I just can't believe Painter wouldn't be a pretty decent upgrade. I refuse to believe that they actually want to lose. That's ridiculous.

Let's check his career stats:

WK TM OPP CMP ATT YD TD INT RSH YD TD FPT

16 IND NYJ 4 11 44 0 1 1 3 0 0.5

17 IND BUF 4 17 39 0 1 2 1 0 0.0

Hmmm, .25 fantasy points per week. LT has a better chance at putting up passing numbers than this loser.

If you have a Colt, any Colt, and think it is possible that Curtis Painter starts later this season you better trade them (unless the Colts sign Joe Mauer). Those WRs will need a catchers mitt to catch those bounce passes coming their way.

Painter is just as bad as Collins, maybe worse. I almost wish they would play Painter to ensure losing most of their games. If they don't get Luck I still want a top 3 pick. Maybe an impact WR (Blackmon or Jeffrey) or a top defensive player.

This has probably already been discussed to death, but what I don't understand is why they even have Painter on the roster. If as soon as QB1 goes down, you go pay millions for some ancient journeyman QB to play instead of QB2, what is QB2 there for? He's got two years in the system, if you can't play him now then when??

Cannot envision a "Curtis Painter Era," or even an epoch. More like a period: brief, hard to look at, and cruelly comedic. Like lingerie on a fat girl. In NFL terms, comparable to the Spergon Wynn period, I would imagine.

It might actually start at some point this Sunday night when the Steelers hold the Colts to eight straight 3-and-outs.

Or if they decapitate Collins, whichever comes first.

The zero backup theory has boggled Colts fans for many years. Obviously ownership has known all along that there has never been a suitable backup to Manning and I guess they figured that it was worth the risk not to roster a legit QB2 and to simply roll the dice on a top 5 draft pick if in fact it ever came to fruition. The last true backup QB the Colts have had was Jim Harbaugh (yes i know he started) and before that it was Jeff George.

Painter may be a better option than Collins but he has shown nothing to suggest that he is capable of anything other than throwing interceptions.

When has he been given the oppurtunity? He looked better than Collins has so far in his pre-season gane against the pack.

Concussion... close enough. ;)
Colts QB Curtis Painter saw his first action of the season in Week 3 against the Steelers. After Kerry Collins left due to a possible concussion, he came on to complete 5 of 11 passes for 60 yards in the 23-20 loss. Afterward, coach Jim Caldwell revealed that Collins' health would not be the only factor in choosing his starter for Week 4.
Read between the lines: this is Painter's gig going forward, despite how Collins feels. Collins is a million years old. There is no upside or future there. Look, Painter isn't Manning. Hell, he might not even be Rex Grossman. At one point a couple of years ago, I thought he might be the worst QB I've ever seen. But I'm telling you, he showed me something this preseason. With Collins looking awful early in the season, I picked up Painter on a hunch (when I started this thread). With all the weapons at his disposal, I believe that his FLOOR is a solid fantasy backup for bye weeks. His ceiling could be far better, once he starts taking first-team reps and gets in a nice groove. He improved dramatically from the first series to the second series last night against a great defense, and he looked comfortable making checks at the line of scrimmage.Dismiss this kid at your own risk.

I really really hope you're correct on this.Signed,

A Dallas Clark Owner

With Vick potentially out and NOBODY worth anything on the ww, I may be taking a shot on Painter to cover for Hasselbeck's bye until Vick gets back.

I really hope Raider Nation is on to something here b/c my once promising team needs a lifeline right now.

What's up with dude's hair though?

Off-topic: Another free tip if you are looking for QB depth: Pick up Christian Ponder.

How many more games do you think they'll watch McNabb lose before wanting to see what Wonder Boy can do? I think he's pretty damn talented, too.

What's the story on Ponder?I'm in a 2QB league and I'm desperate since Manning went down.

I read somewhere (to lazy to look for link right now) that Minny is not thinking of making a change any time soon.I think Ponder starts at some point the year but it may not be until the 2nd half of the season. The Vikings WRs are trash other than Harvin who I think they terribly misuse. But in a 2 QB league I guess he would be worth a shot. Just not sure when he'll be on the field.

The Curtis Painter era will begin after the last Quarterback in North America drawing a breath turns the Colts down...

Curtis Painter:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XfO_DEjAEA
Horrible put together video, with horrible commentary...looks like it was a high school video, lolStill Painter just aint good at all, no matter what videos are out there.
We've really only seen him play as an over-matched rookie. We really don't know yet if he can play. Like the OP I saw something in him during the Green Bay preseason game. He started a little shaky - and never looked GREAT - but he looked like he had a little spark to him.I wouldn't pick him up in a re-draft, and in a dynasty it's tough as well since Manning will be back next season, but he may bring some hope for the rest of the Colt skill players. Maybe they make good "buy lows".

Painter seemed to like Garcon & not Wayne
We overthrew a wide-open TD to Garcon late in the game Sunday. That being said, he's much better than Kerry Collins.
I wouldn't take that too seriously...first pass in his first regular season game action in two years coming in against the Steelers in the fourth quarter. Probably pumped with adrenaline. He settled down after that. Not saying he's Brady but it's a little extreme to use that one pass to make a judgment call.

Really when you think about it, is Painter likely to be that bad? People are saying that Peyton covered up all the flaws and faults of the team but really it is more that Peyton Manning is just simply one of the best handful of QBs EVER; anything would look bad in comparison. The team DOES have some very good players. Its just that everything is designed around Peyton and Painter has had literarly no time to do anything in the two years there. He Never gets in a game. He NEver gets in a pre-season game with ANY of the regular starters. He NEVER gets even a sniff as much of practice that other backups do because all things in Indy revolve around Peyton. So it does not surprise me that he looks like a guy that has no continuity or practice or repetition; because he doesn't.

And when you think about it, does he figure to play out as bad as most other backups in the league would?

Do you want Leinart or Clausen out there instead? Kafka or Luke McCown or trent Edwards or Matt Moore? Is he even as bad as some starters named Tavaris Jackson or Matt Cassell the way they are playing? Legitimately, if any team outside a small handful loses their starter, most teams would look just as bad. I had to stop and think for a minute to even think of who backed Drew Brees up. Its not like there are world beaters out there a-plenty that would be any better than Painter.

No doubt by now you have seen the YouTube song about Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick:

(aka The Friday Song if you are from west Michigan)

INDIANAPOLIS—QB Curtis Painter might be in line to make his first career start Monday night at Tampa Bay.Veteran Kerry Collins still is being evaluated after exiting Sunday night’s loss to Pittsburgh with concussion-like symptoms. Even if Collins is cleared to play, it makes sense to see if Painter represents an upgrade. In three starts, Collins has completed just 49 percent of his passes and averaged just 4.9 yards per attempt. That’s not good enough. Painter suffered a tough start against the Steelers, fumbling on a sack by LB James Harrison that S Troy Polamalu returned for a touchdown. He also missed a wide-open WR Pierre Garcon on what would have been a 74-yard TD.But Painter rebounded and directed a critical 10-play, 80-yard drive that produced a 20-20 tie with 2:09 remaining. If nothing else, management needs to determine if Painter is a viable backup option moving forward.
:drive:Painter will face the Tampa2 defense this week, which as the FBG upgrades/downgrades email pointed out is the same defense he faces every day in practice. The Tampa2 covers each of the deep halves very effectively, so I would feel pretty good about inserting Mr. Clark into your lineup if you need him to pull out the win on Monday night.

I'll start him in my 2QB league - nothing on the Waiver Wire much better.

To me he looked as if he ran the offence more efficiently than Collins. He made a hot read to Garcon that should have been a TD and even had a quick snap (doing his best impersonation of Manning). Reggie Wayne was even endorsing Painter when Collins was signed.

A team will take on the personality of their QB and their coach. Collins just doesn't look up to the task. Painter at least has some fire and we saw Indy play better ball when Painter was in.

He has to be better then Kerry. I still can't believe Collins is getting paid that type of jack. Not sure what the Colts FO thought he could accomplish in this offense. They would have been better off sticking with Painter & Orlovsky in the 1st place. Had they not invested all that money in Kerry, then maybe they would have had some for Garrard...

I'm surprised that people don't all hire Kerry's agent. After the contracts he got from Tenn and now this one considering his actual production is insane.

Looking forward to seeing the young kid get his chance on a week's worth of reps

Any guesses at how this will affect Collie?
Well first, it's not set in stone that Painter is starting this week. But the Orlovsky signing is a pretty good indicator that the Colts doubt Collins will be available to them. If Painter indeed gets the start, I'd roll with Clark and Wayne for sure, and I might even give Garcon a shot if you have limited options.Edit: I never actually answered the question. I would not touch Collie until Painter clearly develops a rapport with him.

Kerry Collins missed Thursday's practice and coach Jim Caldwell confirmed that he is still recovering from his apparent concussion in Week 3. The Colts are preparing as if Curtis Painter will start Monday night's game against the Bucs.

Reggie Wayne finally gets his wish. The Colts receiver campaigned for QB Curtis Painter to start when the team was searching for a replacement for Peyton Manning. Reggie is a stand-up guy. :thumbup:Get on this train now, fellas. Painter goes for 240 & 2 TDs Monday night... minimum!

Do you think I should drop Gabbert for Painter? Painter has a ton of weapons and Gabbert has MJD. I just get the sneaky feeling that Painter will be more than a passable QB for the year. He would only be my 3rd QB in a 2 QB start league.

I'm glad Reggie's a stand-up guy and all but he better put up some decent numbers soon. Meaning, this week!!!!!

I don't know about that but I picked him up two days ago to sit on my bench and see what happens.

Short answer: Never.

Era would imply a long term.

Curtis Painter will not be at the Helm long term so he will not have an era.

This thread sounds like it was created by a guy who picked up Painter and needs points...he also hopes he is better then what the coaches even think. There is a reason why they went and got Kerry and passed on starting Painter in the first place...but lets forget about that.

Everyone hated your condescending attitude as the "Football Critic"... an attitude which was comical in the first place since you aren't very smart. Now you're wearing out your welcome with this dumb alias as well. You actually make reading a HUCKS post somewhat refreshing.

Time to create yet another alias, and try hard to make sure that this one has a better personality.

Raider :hey: can I talk? Ok, well actually not me. I'll let the Colts' best player talk.

Reggie Wayne lobbying for Painter

On Thursday, Wayne made his feelings clear. Appearing on Michael Irvin’s radio show on WQAM in Miami, Wayne explained that he believed the team should have relied on the guy who already was on the roster.

“It took me two years to learn this offense,” Wayne said. “Now, you mean to tell me you’re gonna bring in somebody and he’s gonna learn it in 18 days? That just didn’t sit right. That just didn’t sit right with me. And I know we had Curtis Painter who’d been here for three years. You just gotta give him a shot. We gotta give him a chance.”

Wayne said that the move conjured memories of his second year with the Colts, when the team brought in Qadry Ismail without giving Wayne a chance to show what he had learned and how hard he had worked to show that he can play.

“I may get a lot of flak about this, but that’s all the way different from what our whole motto is. Our whole motto’s always been ‘the next man up.’ And then we went and got somebody else. I’m like, ‘Well, that’s not how we roll, really.’”

Wayne’s comments come at a time when it appears likely that “the next man up” approach will give Wayne exactly what he wants for Painter. Though the team won’t use the “c” word, Collins apparently has a concussion. And Painter apparently will play on Monday night at Tampa.

Thanks, but it's all just :hophead: now.JuSt CuZ had already declared that Painter is a bum. So... that's that.
