Google Announces Launch Of Google Music - MP3 Store, Free Cloud Storage, Music Sharing, And Artist Hub

Just minutes ago, Google announced the launch of the long-awaited Google Music storefront. What's Google Music offering?

* MP3 Store: Available on the Android Market as a new category starting today. The tracks are stored in the cloud as 320Kbps MP3 files - no DRM. You also get 90 second song previews. Requires Android 2.2+. Universal, EMI, and Sony are all on board (Warner Music Group is not), along with many smaller independent labels. 8 million paid tracks are live at launch, but the number will soon be 13 million.

* Free Cloud Storage: The original 20,000 song cap that was part of the Google Music beta will remain in place, and it will remain free. It does not appear this storage is expandable at present, but this wasn't really discussed.

* Song Sharing / Recommendation: You can share a song or album with your friends once you've purchased it via Google+ only. They'll receive one free listen of the song or album you just purchased. Your G+ friends will see any songs you've purchased then recommended in the Market as part of your Friend Stream, where the full song or album will play back once for any of your friends.

* Exclusive Tracks: Google Music will offer some tracks exclusively (like live tracks from The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Shakira, and Dave Matthews Band). Busta Rhymes will be debuting his new album on Google Music.

* Free Song of the Day: Pretty self-explanatory, like Amazon's Free App of the Day, but with songs.

* Artist Hub: Allows self-producing artists to submit their tracks to Google Music (link here). You can create an artist page, upload music, and set your own retail prices. $25 to create your own artist page. Google's cut is 30% - flat rate.

* T-Mobile Carrier Billing: This one is self-explanatory. T-Mobile customers will also get some exclusive free tracks.

* US Only: Google has only signed distribution deals with major labels for the US market. There was no mention of any future availability of the service outside the United States.

Google Music is open for business

Google Music is open for business

11/16/2011 02:15:00 PM

Last May at Google I/O, we launched Music Beta by Google with a clear ambition: to help people access their music collections easily from any device. Music Beta enabled you to upload your personal music collection (up to 20,000 songs) for free to the cloud so you could stream it anywhere, any time. Today, the beta service evolves into a broader platform: Google Music. Google Music is about discovering, purchasing, sharing and enjoying digital music in new, innovative and personalized ways.

Google Music helps you spend more time listening to your collection and less time managing it. We automatically sync your entire music library—both purchases and uploads—across all your devices so you don't have to worry about cables, file transfers or running out of storage space. We’ll keep your playlists in tact, too, so your “Chill” playlist is always your “Chill” playlist, whether you’re on your laptop, tablet or phone. You can even select the specific artists, albums and playlists you want to listen to when you're offline.

Purchase and share

We also want to make it easy and seamless for you to grow your music collection. Today, we added a new music store in Android Market, fully integrated with Google Music.

The store offers more than 13 million tracks from artists on Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, EMI, and the global independent rights agency Merlin as well as over 1,000 prominent independent labels including Merge Records, Warp Records, Matador Records, XL Recordings and Naxos. We’ve also partnered with the world's largest digital distributors of independent music including IODA, INgrooves, The Orchard and Believe Digital.

You can purchase individual songs or entire albums right from your computer or your Android device and they’ll be added instantly to your Google Music library, and accessible anywhere.

Good music makes you want to turn up the volume, but great music makes you want to roll down the windows and blast it for everyone. We captured this sentiment by giving you the ability to share a free full play of a purchased song with your friends on Google+.

Exclusively on Google Music

We’re celebrating our launch with a variety of music that you won’t find anywhere else, much of it free. There’s something for everyone, with a variety of free tracks to choose from:

The Rolling Stones are offering an exclusive, never-before-released live concert album, Brussels Affair (Live, 1973), including a free single, “Dancing with Mr. D.” This is the first of six in an unreleased concert series that will be made available exclusively through Google Music over the coming months.

Coldplay fans will find some original music that’s not available anywhere else: a free, live recording of “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”, a five-track live EP from their recent concert in Madrid and a remix of “Paradise” by Tiësto.

Busta Rhymes’s first single from his upcoming album, Why Stop Now (feat. Chris Brown), is available for free.

Shakira’s live EP from her recent concert in Paris and her new studio single, “Je L’Aime à Mourir” are both being offered up free.

Pearl Jam are releasing a live album from their 9/11/11 concert in Toronto, free to Google Music users.

Dave Matthews Band are offering up free albums from two live concerts, including new material from Live On Lakeside.

Tiësto is offering up a new mix, “What Can We Do?” (feat. Anastacia), exclusively to Google Music users.

Artist hub

Whether you’re on a label or the do-it-yourself variety, artists are at the heart of Google Music. With the Google Music artist hub, any artist who has all the necessary rights can distribute his or her own music on our platform, and use the artist hub interface to build an artist page, upload original tracks, set prices and sell content directly to fans—essentially becoming the manager of their own far-reaching music store. This goes for new artists as well as established independent artists, like Tiesto, who debuts a new single on Google Music today.

Starting today, Google Music is open in the U.S. at market.android.com, and over the next few days, we will roll out the music store to Android Market on devices running Android 2.2 and above. You can also pick up the new music app from Android Market and start listening to your music on your phone or tablet today. And don’t forget to turn your speakers up to eleven.

So I can upload my 10,000 songs to the Google Cloud and have access to them anywhere (almost). No fee.
Yes. And you can "pin" songs, or albums to your device so they are available offline.

I've never owned an iPod or anything, and I have been using Google Music for several months now. I obviously can not compare it to anything, but I think it is pretty neat.

I like the free music part of it. Here is the Google Music blog with tips and tricks, and info about free songs and what not: http://magnifier.blogspot.com/

Still wish I could upload from phone to my cloud. I still have to manually attach to PC and move it etc.

However, I do like it for the limited time Iused the Beta. My only problem is the shuffle all ends up playing ringtones and podcasts... I need to set up playlists lol

Apparently they want a credit card number to store on file when new users try to download a free song... but my GB Team claims to have simply canceled out of the input box when request to bypass the request.

Oh yeah, I've got way too many christmas and children songs on mine to even think about the Shuffle all feature ;)

Another plus on the new android app is the ability to both "thumbs up" a song, and have the "Thumbs up" auto playlist available.

Does this allow you to transfer the song to your CPU hard drive as well?
yes, it appears that you can download purchased (or free) songs from the webapp up to 2 times. Or you can use the Music Manager to download as many times as you want.

Just read about this and decided to give it a try. Currently uploading a few thousand songs. So far, so awesome.

First I went through all my music on my PC and deleted duplicates, reorganized some stuff, checked tags, etc to keep it all organized (it was a mess).

This rocks, and you cant beat the price. The Droid App id pretty bare bones, but Im sure theyll be rolling out updates regularly. So far Ive had no issues with functionality, but Ill be happy to get more features as they add them.

Note: If you have music on your phone, be sure to NOT upload those songs from your PC, or youll have duplicates in the Google Music App.

I actually went ahead and deleted the music from my phone when I jumped all in. I like it too, I have listened to about 90% of my music with over the last 5 or 6 months or so.

Been using it for some time and I am loving it. I buy from Amazon, Amazon loads it right into itunes, and Google Music uploads all songs put into itunes in a couple of minutes, works perfectly.

I keep about 1000 songs on my phone for the times when I might not have any service....cant be without tunes when out in the boonies

They just bought a site called Songza that I was unfamiliar with. It appears their niche is having expert curators make playlist for moods, events, etc.

Looking for a playlist for working out? Cardio or strength? Multiple to choose from.

I have subscribed to play radio for a few months now, and this is an area they needed to improve on. IHeart radio is currently doing this well.

Songza is FANTASTIC.. I'm devastated google bought it and will probably muck it up with monetization now.

It was my favorite music site.. the BEST!

I'll enjoy it whilst it lasts.. but I expect google to make it worse... and so i'll just have to turn back to my 2nd favorite music site tunein

Google has done a good job lately of not screwing around with the small companies they acquire. Waze is still a fantastic GPS app that Google really hasn't messed with much except for a few updates here and there. I'd imagine they'll do the same with Songza, at least short-term. They more than likely aquired them to be able to incorporate their mixes into Play Music.
