Good god there are so many other topics in life to build a show around, but it seems like every year horse racing gets more than it's fair share of shots.

Me either, but Ill definitely be checking out an HBO show directed by Michael Mann and starring Hoffman, Nolte, and Farina. I highly doubt there is much of a focus on the horses, races, being at the races, etc. This will be about the shady nature of it in between races mostly.

Yeah, JFC was largely a miss, but for some strange reason, I actually liked it. I'm not going to say it was "good", because I don't really think it was, but I couldn't stop watching it. It was almost like a trian wreck, but a well-appointed train wreck. I have a girl friend who thinks everybody's insane. She's a long time bartender and has plenty of cause to think that. She still says "I don't know Butchie instead" when a group of people are carrying on like imbeciles. That never stops being funny to me, though that probably has more to do with my being entertained by her exasperation than the show.

Just set it up to DVR. Hasnt even started and I already have a complaint - Hoffman's star character being named Ace Bernstein is way too close to DeNiro's great character in Casino, Ace Rothstein, for my liking.

What's pointless and incomprehensible? Seemed pretty straightforward to me. I think it showed great promise and can't wait to watch it. Loved the shots and audio when they were in the starting gate. That's exactly the kind of detail I was hoping for with the Milch/Mann duo. That's a heavyweight team. As far as reminding you of John From Cincinnati...I'm not sure what would have done that. Maybe Nolte's character a little bit, but nothing about him seemed surreal. The guy knows he's sitting on a beast that is going to change his life. Regardless, it was the first episode in what will be a long arc, so you can't jump to any conclusions. A lot of people didn't warm to the Wire in the first episode. When you're dealing with this kind of talent, you need to give them space to build their world.

As a former track junkie who has been friends with plenty of connections over the years, everything about that rung true. I also think that jockey kid is probably partially based on Kent Desormeaux.

It may lack the supernatural element of John From Cincinnati but the storytelling is just as sloppy, and the dialogue just as goofy. Betting it suffers the same fate, but you never know, maybe they tighten it up.

I really like Dennis Farina, I met him 10 years ago when he was on a USO tour and he was pure class. Big, hilarious guy, takes over a room.

John From Cincinnati was a bit sloppy, though a lot of that was deliberate. I don't get anything in this that came off that way. This was the first episode and we have no clue what is going on yet. We don't have any context, we don't have any investment in anybody, we don't know who anybody is, no back story, so of course you're not going to really understand what's happening yet. If you've watched these HBO shows over the years, you know the cardinal rule is that rushing to any judgement whatsoever after one episode is missing the point. Patience, grasshopper.

Just out of curiosity, what did you find sloppy about it?

Considering I will never ride a horse in a race, the filming made me feel like I was right there.

Watched the pilot a couple days ago. I found it to be somewhat confusing and nothing really grabbed me. I'll certainly give it a season before coming to a conclusion on it and deciding if I want to watch the next season, but with Hoffman, Nolte, and Farina I figured this would be cant miss.

Have to admit I was disappointed when I saw it. I think were really trying to inject some realism about "the game" in there but threw too many things into too short of a time with too much detail that a non-horse-player just isn't going to pick up. Makes me appreciate the way a show like Boardwalk Empire has managed to roll out its characters.

Guy who wrote NYPD Blue and Deadwood wrote this series. (good interview in Wired, plus this guy was featured in a pbs special about police dramas which was cool even though I never watched them) There is plenty of real life drama in this sport. Trainers, Jockeys, Track Managers, Horse Owners, Gamblers. The problem is most people don't care about the sport anymore, kind of like boxing.(have not watched the show)

Ok watched episode number 2 tonight! I can't understand a ####### thing other than the poker scenes. The dialogue between Hoffman and his chauffeur is incomprehensible! I want to like the show but the ####### dialogue with the guy from Peru and his accent, and the Irish lady jockey and her accent, and the other jockey who is foreign. And, I know Nick Nolte has a gravely voice, but did he have a stroke? And the stuttering jockey agent guy!

Oh, almost left out the crippled lady from Deadwood is now a character. Even with her paralysis, and speech impediment she can somewhat be understood.

Anyway I think it was a good episode!
