WIS XV: Alphabet Soup with a side of Salary

Official rules
You will be drafting 25 players. Each player's LAST NAME will begin with a different letter. For example, once you draft Tim Greg Golson, you cannot draft Doug Glanville.

For the purposes of the draft, the letters Q+I will be considered the same. You must draft one player whose last name begins with EITHER Q or I. The letter X will not be represented. You must draft one player for each of the remaining 23 letters.

The draft will consist of 24 "normal" rounds and one "wild card" round. The wild card round will be round 24. In this round, and this round only, owners can select a player whose last name begins with a letter they have already used. (From the example above, you could select Glanville in round 24).

Players whose last names begin with Z,I,Q MAY NOT be drafted in the wild card round.

There is also a SALARY minimum and maximum for drafted players.

Every season used must be between $1,000,000 and $10,000,000 (inclusive) for pitchers and between $1,000,000 and $8,000,000 (inclusive) for position players.

Eligible players for this draft will come from the National League or the American League during the years 1901-2011. No federal league players allowed, and no 19th century players allowed. Full and combined seasons are allowed. NO PARTIAL SEASONS are allowed.

Draft order will be set by rolling dice (see details below)

There will be a ballpark draft that will be the reverse order of the player draft order. Owners must have a park selected in order to make their 4th round pick (thus the draft must be completed by the end of round 3). Ballparks must have been in use from 1901-2011 and must be unique in architecture. This means that once Enron Field is off the board, Minute Maid is off the board too.

No trading of draft picks permitted until the 5th round has begun. Player-for-player trades are permitted at any time however they must adhere to the letter restrictions.

The letter restriction WILL remain in place during the season.

Draft Clock and notes

The draft clock will begin in round 2.

The clock will be a 1-hour clock that runs from 9am-7pm in the poster's time zone.

Please do NOT skip ahead if someone ahead of you has already used a letter.

If a draftee picks a player with a letter they have already used, they will be auto-skipped (as if it was a valid pick) and can make that pick up any time. The incorrect player IS eligible to be drafted.

League Number: MLB99353

I like the alphabet soup thing. The salary part I dunno. The $1M min doesn't matter because we wouldn't be likely to draft any of those guys anyway. The $10M max majorly skews things towards offense. It wipes out 474 pitcher seasons to only 57 hitter seasons, most of which are Babe Ruth.

The media in this country needs to go. It is a curse on a free socity.

Maybe a salary cap is more appropriate?

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. The biggest casualty will the be deadball pitchers with tons of IP/162, which will force people to go with 4-5 man rotations.

If we want to punish hitters equally, the cut line should be set somewhere between $7M and $8M.

That is true. A lot of those 474 are deadball seasons that aren't necessarily all that valuable.

I suppose the salary max will also create a fairly good spread of IP and PA seasons being used, which is probably a good thing with the alphabet soup format since we want to make every pick matter as much as possible.

Any opinion about lowing the max salary of position players to $8M?

It'll remove 220 player seasons from the draft pool including a lot of the usual WIS suspects

That makes sense to me. We'll see what Franco thinks since he is both the commish and probably knows the most of us about salaries.

I'd be fine with lowering it to 8mil, but I suspect the pitching hit would be just as big (maybe bigger) than the impact on hitters. With an 8mil cap on pitchers, a 200ip guy will not be an ace. I use a ton of pitchers in the 8-9mil range. You can find platoon hitters easier than you can find guys for a 5-man rotation.

I picked 10mil to force people to go to a 4-man rotation with a deeper bullpen. You'll probably be using 10+ pitchers with that limit in place, so more roster spots will matter.

Cutting it to 8mil will make the roster spots matter even more, but I don't think it helps the problem of too much hitting depth vs. pitching depth.

At 10mil, there are 375 pitchers with ERC# under 2.50 and over 150 IP.
At 8mil, there are 216 pitchers with ERC# under 2.50 and over 150 IP. That's a big chunk of usable starters gone.

Now, granted, 216 SPs is still not bad, if we all draft 5 of them that's only 120 (24x5). The problem is that half of them probably start with the same 4-5 letters.

At 10mil there are 285 hitters with 400 PA and OPS# over 1.000 (though many are 1B/OF)
At 8mil there are 176 of them with 400 PA and OPS# over 1.000 (though many are 1B/OF)

Same thing... you lose a lot of hitters cutting the cap, and a lot of the good 2B/3B/SS seasons are between 8-10mil.

I'm all for shrinking the draft pool so the QI/Z guys matter a little more and you have to think really hard about using your valuable letters. I just don't want to go nuts. But I'm willing to go to 8mil if people feel strongly that it will help.

EDIT: I see it was just a suggestion for position players. I might like that a little more.

Just thinking out loud.

What if we followed the alphabet each round? Meaning in the first round 1.01 pick has last name A. 1.02 has last name B......1.24 has last name Z.

2nd round everyone moves down a letter. 1.01 slot (2.24) would have B (or Z, whichever way makes sense to move). Continue that for 24 rounds.

I think it was meant to be $10m pitchers and $8m hitters

Just thinking out loud.

What if we followed the alphabet each round? Meaning in the first round 1.01 pick has last name A. 1.02 has last name B......1.24 has last name Z.

2nd round everyone moves down a letter. 1.01 slot (2.24) would have B (or Z, whichever way makes sense to move). Continue that for 24 rounds.

I have a feeling some people would really luck out. Your #3 is R, your #2 is S, your #1 is T, that is a lot better than your #3 is J, your #2 is K, your #1 is L.

Really? I think you have that backwards if anything. There are #### tons of R, S, T players. Not so many J, K, L.

Let's not over complicate things with round restrictions. Leave some room for team creativity.

That's what I was thinking. Even with the position player limit set $2M lower, the number of hitter seasons removed from draft pool is still lower than the >$10M pitchers.

I think Sparty makes it 3 left.

Not sure about belljr. T-Up is another regular we haven't heard from. Maybe we can lure Koya in with the promise of cheap drugs and simlive marathons.

WIS XV: Alphabet Soup with a side of Salary

For the purposes of the draft, the letters Q+I will be considered the same. You must draft one player whose last name begins with EITHER Q or I. The letter X will not be represented. You must draft one player for each of the remaining 23 letters.

The draft will consist of 24 "normal" rounds and one "wild card" round. The wild card round will be round 24. In this round, and this round only, owners can select a player whose last name begins with a letter they have already used. (From the example above, you could select Glanville in round 24). Players whose last names begin with Z,I,Q may NOT be drafted in the wild card round.

My real last name begins with Z. Anybody here an I, Q or X?

The letter restriction WILL remain in place during the season.
