Tipping question

I'll start off by saying I would just as soon pump my own gas. But in New Jersey, there is no self-service. So every once in a while, I am stuck getting gas in Jersey. The attendants are nice enough and I never really thought about tipping them - until the other day when I was with someone who works off tips and she suggested tipping the attendant. It's not that I don't want to tip; I actually have no problem doing it and am a good tipper. Is this a regular practice for those of you who live in states like New Jersey?

10% seems fair if they do your windows too.

I do not live in NJ but when I get gas there I usually tip $2; it is not much but any more offsets the savings on the price of the gas (NJ has inexpensive gas).

10% seems fair if they do your windows too.

They piss in your gas tank if you leave anything less than 18.

Kind of funny that the lobbying was by the owners rather than some kind of gas station attendants' union or something.

If the emPloyer can legally pay the attendants less thaninum wage, I would consider tipping them. If the employer must pay at least minim wage, then no tip for routine service.

Don't take this the wrong way, but your life is a trainwreck of epic proportions.

I work in NJ. Ive never tipped in my life and I dont know anyone who has.

My parents live in NJ (always have) and my dad tips when he goes...he told me more than once that the attendant he tips always laughs (but is thankful) and jokes, he is the only person who tips him each week. Asked a buddy of mine I grew up with that still lives there and he thought I was nuts to suggest tipping them 9and he is a good tipper in general). I lived there growing up and in summers in college, and I never once tipped.

"In 1949, a gas station in Hackensack lured customers away from rival stations when it offered gasoline at a discount to motorists who pumped the gas themselves. Lobbying by the New Jersey Gasoline Retailers Association led to the passage of a law that year banning self-serve at gas stations in New Jersey."

last time I was in trenton and the pulled into a gas station, the attendant filled my tank, then I punched him in the kidney and took his money.

So no tip?

No, it's not. You can if you want to, of course, or I guess if the attendant really goes above and beyond, but it's not general practice.

Someone told me it is actually against the law to tip gas attendants in NJ. I don't know anyone that tips them.

I tip for many things probably things I shouldn't ... I have been getting gas in NJ for 25 years. I have never tipped a gas attendant. never crossed my mind to do so
