Dynasty Alert - Dolphins WR Roberto Wallace (1 Viewer)

pghrob

Footballguy
The arrest of Chad Johnson and the emergence of Ryan Tannehill coinciding with the maturation and health of the physically gifted Roberto Wallace all are combining to make it difficult not to start considering the 3rd year WR out of San Diego State as a bonafide sleeper candidate for a breakout season. At 6'4" and 222 lbs, Wallace has the size to offer any QB the assurance to put the ball up for him to "go get it". Wallace has worked in the off season to gain better understanding of the WCO. The hard work and opportunity are combining to return dividends for Wallace as he is getting recognized during training camp.

If you have room to stash him on your dynasty roster, it wouldn't hurt to sign him off the free agent list now. The Dolphins have a weak WR corps and the field is wide open for someone to emerge as the primary target.

Roberto Wallace caught four passes for 71 yards in Friday's preseason debut. Coming off a strong offseason, Wallace entered in the second quarter, catching a 21-yard pass from starter Matt Moore. All four of Wallace's catches went for at least 13 yards. Limited to special teams last season, the 6-4, 225-pound wideout could carve out a role in Miami's muddled receiver corps with a strong preseason. Aug 10 - 11:33 PM

someone needs to step up. he's still raw, they've been "developing" him for a couple of years now but i think he's got the talent to be somebody. i'm in.

When Miami signed Johnson, source said it was largely done to make sure the QBs had enough weapons. Name to now remember: Roberto Wallace.

Guy is in his 3rd year. I think the Dolphins have big plans for the kid if he plays up to his potential. Just note now you've been warned. If your looking for the WR MIA to own look no further. :)

per rotoworld via miami herald:

The Dolphins rewarded WR Roberto Wallace for his four-catch, 71-yard preseason opener by placing him with the first-team offense in Sunday's camp practice.

Largely a special teamer his first two NFL seasons, Wallace is emerging as a serious sleeper for a starting job in Miami. For some background, Wallace went undrafted out of San Diego State in 2010 despite running a 4.48 at his Pro Day at 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds. He only had 73 catches in his college career. Wallace has more talent than Legedu Naanee and is on the deep-league radar. Aug 13 - 1:45 AM

Phins are going 4-12, they won't take a QB again, I think the WR1 for the year 2014 and beyond is not here yet.

Can Wallace go out and catch 40-50 balls this season? He can now as only Bess and Naanee would be ahead of him and if he has any skills he can cruise right past Naanee,

Spotlight On Roberto Wallace After Chad Johnson Release

Aug 13th, 2012 at 7:02 am by Joe SorianoAFC East

The big news coming out of the AFC East right now, besides the return of Logan Mankins, is the decision that the Miami Dolphins made to cut Chad Johnson and avoid the distraction associated with his arrest. The biggest thing about Johnson’s release is the actual football ramifications on the Dolphins, because losing Johnson cuts the skill of the wide receiver position. After all, he has been the best wideout in the ‘Fins training camp and had a high chance of being the team’s number one receiver on opening day.

With Johnson released, however, the focus shifts on Legedu Naanee, Brian Hartline, and a 2010 undraftee out of San Diego State in Roberto Wallace. Hartline is the most consistent and best receiver out of that group, so he’s a virtual lock to start and get a high amount of targets after returning from injury. Naanee has looked good in training camp and there were rumblings (likely from the ignorant) that he could have usurped Hartline for the No. 2 job had Johnson stayed, but I’m not in favor of that after Naanee’s inconsistent year in Carolina in 2011. I mean, Hartline is way better than Naanee. Better hands, more consistent, way better deep threat etc. The Dolphins really need him back.

The young and athletic Roberto Wallace is easily the most intriguing wide receiver out of that trio, because Hartline and Naanee aren’t too exciting. Hartline is a good deep threat, but you know what you get out of him; consistent yardage. Naanee is a sure-handed, somewhat boring wideout who helps a team and is ideally a No. 3 receiver.

As for Wallace, this is a guy who runs a sub-4.50 forty and is 6’4″, 223 pounds. He is everybody’s favorite sleeper to win a starting gig, especially after a big game to open up the preseason. Against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Wallace was one of the team’s lone bright spots after hauling in four passes for 71 yards.

An extremely talented wide receiver, David Garrard had this to say about Wallace, “Roberto is going to be a pretty good receiver in this league. He’s that guy I’ve really been looking at and trying to work with. When he puts it all together, he can be a big talent.”

Everything Garrard said above is true, as Wallace can certainly blossom into a quality starting receiver if he continues to develop; he has the physical tools. In fact, the Dolphins played Wallace with the first-team offense yesterday. Naanee is more of a sure-thing, but there is no denying that Wallace has more talented and was a standout in the preseason game. Keep watching the Dolphins wide receiver situation closely, because keeping track of the opponents is also crucial.
he's had a pretty stellar pro-day in 2010 and it's understandable why a team would try to keep the kid around.Height: 6037

Weight: 223

40 Yrd Dash: 4.48

20 Yrd Dash: 2.56

10 Yrd Dash: 1.47

225 Lb. Bench Reps: 19

Vertical Jump: 36 1/2

Broad Jump: 123"

20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.12

3-Cone Drill: 6.80

according to miami beat writer omar kelly, he's still raw but has the talent to be special. if he can finally take the next step, i think the sky is the limit with those measurables.

serious question (no sarcasm): What were his liabilities that kept him from being drafted?
x2Raw or not, with those measurable and a "pretty stellar pro-day", he seems like he would have been a draft worth prospect.
he played for san diego state, his college stats looked like this, and he was considered extremely raw. i don't think there was anything else, i don't see any negative character articles or anything out there.

He also missed two years in 05/06 with a shoulder injury.

The bottom line on @ochocinco 's release is Miami would rather invest in Roberto Wallace than 85. That's their stance. I can see both sides.

I see several people calling him raw but what is raw about him? Bad route runner? Unable to beat coverage? What?

Q. Talk about your football background.

A. I'm from Panama, and I only started playing football my junior year of high school. Only now am I starting to really understand the game and coming around mentally. I feel like I'm just starting to get it. Obviously, I have the physical ability. I feel like I can be one of the best wide receivers to come out of college this year. I've been watching a lot of film of the NFL greats, and doing everything I can to learn more. I am just ready to show (NFL teams) what I can do.

raw = limited experience coming into the league and still learning the game/position.
Nah I get what it means but after three years in the NFL I was wondering if there was any area he was particularly shaky on.
from what i've read, it's that he's just been inconsistant. being on the practice squad for 2 years in concerning, but it's the opportunity now and the talent/measurables that make him appealing and worth the grab deeper leagues imo.

Never played a game form start to finish? Never had to be the guy on a game winning drive where he must gain separation? Never had to be the guy to score the winning TD, never had a drive where he caught two passes in a row...lot of raw in his game. His college stats are not exactly overwhelming either. Week1- Bess 6/70Week2- Clay 4/45/TDWeek3-Naanee 5/60Week4-Wallace 4/60Every week someone else might have the most receptions but Miami is going to struggle.

This guy in college and pro the last 5 years has avg 16 receptions, 200 yds, and not even 1 TD per season...control your urge to want to get too excited here. I also would like to believe Wallace is the guy as a Phinsfan and I support him with Johnson leaving but people in hell would like a cold drink of water, does not mean it's gonna happen.

Never caught 40 balls in college or pro, never hit 500 yards receiving, avg of less than 1 TD per season...raw? This guy is chilled and in the butcher's cooler, that's how raw he is.

I just can't take this guy seriously. He has had no production whatsoever at any level. There's plenty of guys with measurables, but let's see him do it on the field. I mean it took Chad Johnson getting kicked off the team for him to even get an opportunity and this was an Old Chad that couldn't even get separation AND he was widely seen as the best WR on the dolphins by far. Not exactly a very encouraging sign if you can't even get noticed on the field prior to this week.

serious question (no sarcasm): What were his liabilities that kept him from being drafted?
i'm guessing the NFL execs were wondering why he couldnt get on the field and more targets in collegebut he had two other pretty good guys in front of him ... VBrown and DSampson

This guy just needs a chance and it looks liek he may get it.
He has gotten plenty here. The locals are always pulling for him. We all see his talent. But he has what we call James Pruitt disease. Back in 1986 we had this kid named James Pruitt at WR.....he was the best practice and pre-season player ever at the WR position for the Phins.....come game day......oh lord. But anyway I hope he gets a chance to play meaningful minutes this season. He has a lot of talent. He is one to keep a watchful eye on.

In re-draft, how does he compare to a guy like Josh Gordon, in terms of FF value this season?
honestly i wouldn't touch either one of them in redraft... they're both far from sure things this season. they're both getting opportunities here but neither of them have proven they can do anything with them.

Agreed, the odds are against him, but there have been other players who had little to no college game experience come in as free agents and make it.Guys like Willie Parker and Antonio Gates were almost non-entities in the college football landscape and did pretty well when they finally got their shots.

Just in case anyone missed it in the other threads, from Rotoworld:

WR Roberto Wallace was ripped by the coaching staff during Tuesday night's episode of "Hard Knocks."Wallace ran with the first-team offense following Chad Johnson's dismissal, but the coaches aren't happy with him. "He doesn't seem to be moving forward at the same rate that the other guys are," receivers coach Ken O'Keefe said. "It doesn't seem like his legs are underneath him, he's not separating." During a film session, the coaches refer to the former undrafted free agent as "Ankle Weights" Wallace. We'd pump the breaks on any deep-league sleeper talk.

this was prior to his solid performace in the preseason game, where he was open quite consistantly. i also saw this gem from today's practice from dave hyde of the sun sentinel:
Roberto Wallace caught a 40-yd pass in practice, and he referred to Hard Knocks afterward when he said, "How'd you like the ankle weights on that bomb?" (Coaches scoffed at him in a meeting for running as if he had ankle weights).
ETA: i think hearing/seeing the criticism could light a fire under him... it will be interesting what the coaches are saying on hard knocks when analyzing his first preseason game.

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin released his second depth chart of the preseason...

Code:
WR Legedu Naanee Julius Pruitt Jeff Fuller* Rishard Matthews* BJ Cunningham Chris HoganWR Davone Bess Marlone Moore Roberto Wallace Brian Hartline

This is the guy that the assistant GM was talking to asking what it was that was keeping him from being the man, right?

2nd of many depth charts to be released. him taking 1st team reps in practice means more to me than something as fluid as a depth chart before the second preseason game.

Just watched the latest Hard Knocks. This preseason game was nice but after watching HK & the staff lamarnting his inability to get open , I'm going to need a couple of games to sell me.

:lmao: Ankle Weights Wallace :lmao:

now this Hogan kid might be a rip wan winkle.....

Ok not sure how many of you know this but 10 years ago Wallace was living in Panama and the only football he'd heard of is the one we call soccer. Also, he was a good

Enough soccer player to play internationall for Panamas u-17 team. While most nfl players have been playing football their whole lives he didn't play till he was a junior. Now I know many of you might say big deal look at all the former

Basketball players that make great tight ends, but those guys at least new what the game of football was and probably the basic concept. Now add to that the fact that he plays wr a position with a lot of nuance, footwork, and an inmate knowledge of when to break off a route that only

Comes trough years of reps, and the fact that alot of receivers dont "figure it out" till their thrd year, and you end up with a bunch of ignorant self righteous fools who've never set food on an athletic field who think this guy will

Never amount to anything just because he hasn't done much his first two seasons.

Dynasty is on notice about Roberto Wallace but someone forgot to remind the Miami Dolphins....with that WR corp...I'm guessing he might not be an NFL guy?

Dolphins waived WR Roberto Wallace.

Anyone who watched HBO's Hard Knocks saw this one coming. The coaches referred to the former undrafted free agent as "ankle weights Wallace," a reference to his lack of speed and separation ability.
