If it happens, without question the most likely cause would be disease.

Not a very good root cause list. Famine could be caused by Acts of God/Nature which could be caused by Climate Change. Disease could be caused by degradation of Human/economic conditions (I'm assuming you didn't mean improved) which could be caused by war.

My vote is on Climate change leading to economic failure, famine, disease and war of all flavors in at least 100-150 years and potentially 50-100

Went with never. Most likely, IMO, is meteor. We're too survivalist to destroy ourselves. And we're too advanced, bureaucratic, and crazy enough so

that we'll either figure out or quarantine disease.

Unless we figure out how to live in another solar system, the human population is guaranteed to go to 0 whenever The Sun cools off enough to go red giant.

I hope you've enjoyed this moment in pedantry.

This. Starts with climate change

Oh, I took this the wrong way. Dang. Please forgive.

I stated primary reason, pick whatever you think the primary reason may be, I agree it may be a multitude of reasons. In a pinch, good ol' other is a good option.

Improved economic and health conditions have greatly reduced birth rates in western countries. Birth rates are now below replacement levels in several countries, and only grow due to immigration. Birth rates in the developing world has already greatly reduced. As advances happen in the third world, birth rates could continue to drop dramatically worldwide.

Earth hit by a meteor in 517 years will do it. That will cause another ice age, and they'll be 4000 people left. Then they'll find the Lord and rebuild, they always do.

Solar flare. Happens all the time. Next big Coronal Mass Ejection hits and it's over, we're back to 1780 tech.

If Sanjay Gupta has his way it will be within 1-10 years. Dumb ### inserts himself in the middle of an ebola outbreak which has no cure and a 10% survival rate. Then comes back to US to tell us how dangerous it is

Somebody needs to get on that weaponized thing like in the Tom Clancy novel.

Primary reason will be the death rate greatly exceeds the birth rate.
And when the death rate is reduced to .000001%?

I voted never happen imo. Its a higher probability we'll be biologically immortal before we'll be reduced by 1/2.
It would seem history is not in your favor - given the sheer number of species that have gone extinct. No reason to expect that we will be any different.

Really? I think humans stand pretty far apart from any species that has gone extinct. I don't think dinosaurs had the internet, or even basic tool use ;) We're the ONLY species to shape our environment to suit ourselves, which protects us from a wide variety of potential extinction threats.

And, in my view, we are on the cusp of immortality. Its within 100 years in my opinion.

Those species didn't have the ability to correct the problem that caused them to go extinct. For the most part, humans do.

It would ultimately be disease that pushes it to 50%, if it were ever to happen. Anything that wipes out probably even 10% of the population would result in bodies lying around decaying and disease spreading from there.

True but we're the ONLY species to shape our environment to hurt ourselves, which exposes us to a wide variety of extinction threats.

I'm sure there will be no potential downside that could come from that.

I don't see any reason to be defeatist about this, so I voted never. We can pretty easily imagine today the technologies that it will take to get us out of the solar system and eventually colonizing other planets, and the rate of technological advancement is still accelerating. I think given that, our danger is more to ourselves than to a random natural event.
