Need Help-Present wife bought me (1 Viewer)

Let me preface this by saying that my wife always gets me great gifts and puts a lot of thought into them. However, in the 14 years we have been together, I have returned a few gifts from her. She always says its fine but is definitely bummed and upset when I return it (women, amirite)

Anyway, we are going on a Disney Cruise in two weeks and she comes home with my Valentines Day present today. For some odd reason (unlike her), she thought I wanted or needed a gopro Hero 4. I know what they are, but I have zero desire for one and frankly, as someone who is not into extreme sports, I dont even know what I would use it for.

Quick search on the innerwebs shows me that this thing costs about $400. But she got some bundle so Im sure it was a little more. I really dont want to upset my wife more than I already have with my reaction but this thing needs to go back, no?

Who has one and what do you do with it outside of video yourself snowboarding or jumping out of a plane. Do I keep or return

Any help would be nice since Im at a loss

explain to her it is a terrible gift you have no use for. make her return it and get you something of equal value you can actually use

We made a movie ages ago. Been there done that. I think she just thought it would be cool but im not seeing it.

And no, im not a cyclist.

The fact that no one has said keep it its awesome says a lot. Now I just need to figure out how to return it and let her down gently

Did you ask her what she thought you would use it for?
she said she thought it would be cool for the cruise (excursions, snorkeling, videos of kids)
Maybe exchange it for something that can still be used for that, but is a little more practical? Some kind of cheaper/disposable underwater camera of some sort? That way you can say "Hey great thought, just not a huge fan of this particular type, but I exchanged it and go X so we can still do all that stuff. YOU ARE SO PRETTY."

You should wear to sporting events with the tickets you buy using my patented Stubhub System.

In all seriousness, unless you want some footage of some action sport you partake in, GoPro is pure hype. I like buying as many useless gadgets as I can, so I researched GoPro and couldn't justify any reason to purchase one, and I'm pretty active. Bite the bullet and let her know it's going back, or as it has been alluded to earlier in the thread, make a video and share here.

My brother in law is using his to try to figure out where the wobble is coming from in some construction equipment he builds.

Some mountain biking buddies have them, and I just can't see the appeal. Even when they film a 2-hour ride I was on, and they cut it down into a 5-minute highlight film, it's all I can do to pay attention for the whole thing... and I've never heard of them doing anything else interesting with them.

They seem like something we buy in the US because it's just next on the list - already have an iphone, ipad, laptop, fitbit, GPS, noise canceling headphones... what's next? GoPro? I guess so.

"Honey, sit down...I have something important to tell you. Before I do want you to remember that I love you. I...I...slept with your sister/best friend."

1 minute later

"Just kidding. I didn't really sleep with her. But I am returning that goofy $500 skater-cam you bought me."

Have one and love the waterproif aspect. Used it on current vacation in the pool with the kids, kayaking, and at the beach. I don't think you need to partake in extreme sports to find usage for it where a regular camera or smartphone might be at serious risk to be ruined.

Is it unbelievably awesome? No. But it's pretty damn sweet to use for those types of functions, especially in/under/around water. Also love the wide aspect of the video and pictures. For example, took my 3yo daughter down an alpine slide during the sumner at a ski resort and videoed the ride at arms length. With a normal phone or camera the video would've barely picked up my daughter and I. With the GoPro we were both on full view and it was pretty cool to rematch and see her facial reactions and commentary as we bombed down the hill.

Don't look a Go Pro in the mouth. Or something like that...

Is it just me, or when you see a cyclist with one of these attached to their helmets, don't you want to give them a small bump with your car?

Get some footage of that you ####### jerkoff

Usually when I see a cyclist with one I assume that the primary reason that they have it is in case some ####### like you runs over them and they need the video footage for the lawsuit.

So it's a $500 camera to protect a cyclist in the unlikely event they get hit by a car?

Yep.

So not always is what you're saying. Just tell the wife you don't want it.

If you need the cash return it. Otherwise use it for whatever activities you partake in on the cruise and comment on what an awesome gift it is, she is so thoughtful, etc. She will get the tingles since she picked out such a great gift and reward you with kinky sex and #######s for the entire cruise.

She's right... Under normal circumstances, regular video cameras are 10x better than a gopro due to the audio sucking on them. However if the activity has any chance of the camera getting wet/dusty/jostled then gopro are fantastic.

Use the camera to film some family stuff on vacation. Edit together a couple videos with a cool soundtrack using iMovie or windows Movie maker. Give that to your wife for her birthday. Will be the best gift she's ever gotten. Boom. Lemonade from lemons.

This isn't shtick. Try that. What mean more to you... $400 gift or a happy wife? Not saying that combatively as you know I'm a big acer fan :) Just saying whether she says it or not, it will ding her spirit.

The fact that she specifically wanted it to capture family moments is a key point here. Use it and deliver her a custom video and she will swoon. Don't want/know how to make the movie? I can help us use fiver to get it done for $10-20 on fiver.com. Upload a series of clips and photos to Dropbox and send someone the link and they'll kill it.

so true
Agreed. Shark move if you actually need on of these is to check out the monoprice knockoff to see if it fits your needs:

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=117&cp_id=11704&cs_id=1170401&p_id=10629&seq=1&format=2

Sadly it's not $6 like their cables, but at less than half the price of a high end go-pro... It's worth looking at.

I don't get go pro unless you are into some of the extreme sports. Why would anyone spend the time watching any of the footage, who cares or has time for it.

I also don't get the people who video concerts or sporting events with their phones instead of just enjoying it. You aren't a videographer and someone who is is taping the event most likely if you are that interested.

So you don't understand why someone might want to make home Movies with their family on vacation?

Yea, I get that, but every digital camera already has video capability, as do phones. This item is superfluous. Not to mention, years later we never watch our family movies, only look at the stills if anything

You you'd take your phone snorkeling? With a life proof case, maybe. But then you have to keep a hand free holding it.. this mounts easier.

Don't get me wrong... I think the item is superfluous for 50pct of the population. But it definitely has its purposes.

I agree the item is not worthless. The percentage I'd argue is more like 90 though, but go pro would probably be thrilled if 1/10 people had their cameras, and their stock would soar.

What I don't get is actually going through the footage and actually wanting to rewatch it.

But I admit I say that as a blue hair who only uses youtube if I need to watch a video on how to fix or repair something,

I've watched extreme sports peoples gopro angles, it's awesome, I love the pro wakeboard shots. But those people are an extremely small percent.
