The incredible waste in public education
22 January 2013 - 07:03 AM
I watched a lot of discussion on the news about the ideas to make schools safer after Sandy Hook. A common refrain was the fretting over money to get an armed guard into every school. I didn't get it then, and I don't get it now. Looking at the information here it looks like we have tons and tons of money available but we simply choose to spend it on administrative staff. The amount wasted is staggering and, frankly, disgraceful. I look at things like this and just shake my head.
Imagine how safe our schools could be and how much more could be offered to them if we turned that wasted 15-20 billion dollars a year and turned it to security, facilities, teaching staff, technology, etc.?
EPA conducting illegal human experiments?
02 January 2013 - 08:24 PM
Washington Times article.
I will be very interested to see the outcome of this, both from a fact finding and a legal point of view. The lawsuit alleges that the EPA has been engaged in experiments on human subjects that, as described by the EPA themselves, are lethal. What I find most interesting is that the EPA's defense seems to be that they aren't subject to review by the court - i.e. they are above the law.
Most interesting. There is simply no excuse for this kind of behavior (if true), and the hubris in the the EPA's defense (from the pleadings) is disgraceful. If this is found to be true, then this agency should simply be shuttered.

A cure for paralysis?

On top of the exciting news about possible help for MS sufferers, here is one for those people who have lost function due to spinal injuries.
Absolutely fascinating - evidently olfactory ensheathing cells are the only cells that don't stop growing nerve endings. The dog video is excellent, BTW.
