Team X Chess thread

28 February 2014 - 07:10 AM

Gents, this is the Team X thread.  If you aren't Sand, Pizzatyme, joe t, wdcrob, spoofy, boomboom, unialias you are more than welcome to look in on this thread, but please don't kibbutz.  If you just wandered in here this is a thread for the team above to play Team O in a couple games of chess.  We will be discussing moves and lines in here to crush those other guys.  Rules are pretty simple:

-  3 days for each move.

-  We will play one game as white and one as black simultaneously, so please label your lines as such.

-  We can consult chess opening books, but after that it is brainpower.  No chess engines.  The analyze feature in Chess Time is awesome - great tool.

-  We have a spread of folks in experience and skill.  Since this is a learning experience everyone should contribute and put their thoughts on the line they think is best.  I look forward to this as there are concepts that I know that I will get a better handle on.  So please contribute.

-  When contributing please post the line you foresee for a long as you think is useful.  It helps a lot when you find your error 3 moves down the line.  Or when you miss a possible response to your line (a big one for me).

- We will use a day or two to discuss and then have a vote on the best line to take.  I expect the decisions will be pretty cut and dry by the time discussion is done.

Anything else I missed?

This should be fun!

Some good resources we can use:

http://www.chessgames.com/  Has awesome opening stats.  We can refer to this for our opening library.

http://www.caissa.co...m-generator.php  For this you can enter moves and have it animate.  It may help with looking over proposed lines.

Incredible Administration Choice - Windmills

07 December 2013 - 04:34 PM

Seems windfarms are a big deal these days.  They are politically important enough (despite being nowhere near competitive on an energy cost basis) to have received a 30 year exemption for killing golden and bald eagles.

So, over the years our government has decided that we needed to ban DDT to save the raptors, despite it saving about 500 million lives while it was in use.  So it seems the priorities of this administration are:

1.  Wind farms

2.. Raptors

3.  Human children

Brilliant.  Way to protect a political narrative.

Coin - Electronic Credit Card. This thing is awesome

24 November 2013 - 07:37 PM

Anyone seen this thing?  https://onlycoin.com/

It will take 8 CCs and combine them down.  I have more crap in my wallet than I know what to do with.  Combine this with a rewards membership (hotel, airline, etc.) combiner and I could get my wallet down a decent size (yes, I know, first world problems.).  Seriously considering getting one.

Our next fiscal time bomb - Social Security Disability

12 October 2013 - 07:49 AM

Great article over at CBS going into the Social Security Disability problem, particularly the fraud therein.  The fraud in this program is huge - claims have shifted away from definitive diagnoses toward hard to disprove conditions - back pain, mood disorders, etc.  A system left wide open to be gamed.  And the fraud has flooded in.

The program is expected to become insolvent in 2016 - not far away at all.  In fact, I am somewhat surprised that this isn't on the list of things that need to be addressed.  Well, actually I'm really not surprised.  The administration sure doesn't want this fixed, as it is a nice pocket to put people into that hides them from being on the unemployment rolls.  If the 25% or so of people on SSI were put back into the employment pool our unemployment rate would sit at 12% or so.  12%.  This would be a debacle for our administration and shine a light on exactly how poor our employment situation really is.

At this rate sometime in 2016 folks on SSI will see their checks decrease proportionally (the fund doesn't just go kaput - they simply can't pay out everyone at the full rate).  Now while one would hope for some serious effort at reform I personally expect in the near future strident calls for payroll tax increases "so the most vulnerable among us can receive the benefits they most desperately need."

Global Thermonuclear War - 30 year anniversary

26 September 2013 - 05:17 AM

Mr. Petrov may be the only person on the planet who can legitimately claim to have saved hundreds of millions of lives.  What a fascinating (and terrifying) story about the Soviets, their paranoia, and the inept technology they were using to (almost) start a global nuclear event.

Thanks, Mr. Petrov.
