Ok so a few updates:

Tried Sierra Nevada. Not bad but nothing spectacular imo. I wasn't a huge fan of the aftertaste. I could definitely drink this, but would never choose it over Sam Adams.

Tried Pilsner Urquell. Very good, I was pleasantly surprised. Goes down very easy imo. I might try this one again in the near future.

Thats all for now. Keep the suggestions coming.

Not suprised that you weren't a big fan of the Sierra Nevada. Its a pretty hoppy ale and tastes nothing like a good lager. The aftertaste is the hops.

As for the Pilsner Urquell, when its good its real good. Unfortunately I have run into some consistancy problems with the beer though. But a good Pilsner Urquell on a hot day is tough to beat.

funny to read over this thread again...Sierra Nevada might be my favorite beer right now...lol, how times change.

Are you starting to appreciate the hop? I think I mentioned back in there somewhere that you'd gradually grow to love it.

I am now going to do the beer equivalent of introducing someone who has dabbled in pot to the wonders of Amsterdam:

Half. Time. Beverage. Heaven on earth.

Go there - it's about 45 minutes from you. Bring a cooler and a credit card.

Thoughts on some other beers mentioned: I'm a big fan of Arrogant Bastard, but you *have* to like hops. Stella Artois is ####ty Belgian Budweiser that is a shadow of what it was 20 years ago courtsey of the corporate brewing whore called InBev - don't drink it. I challenge ANYBODY to try Middle Ages Dragonslayer and call it a "lightweight" Imperial stout - alcohol means little when dealing with a nearly supersaturated solution of malt and hops.

Suggestions: Upon reviewing your reviews <g>, I'd suggest trying Keegan Ales Old Capital - local brew out of Kingston. His other two ales are more flavorful, but this sounds like its more to your tastes. Get a six pack of Southampton Secret Ale at Halftime. It's a Sticke, or strong (for the style) Altbier. Yummy stuff. Want to try a Belgian Saison? Dupont is a classic of the style, but don't disregard local products - Southampton makes an outstanding one, as does Ommegang (Hennepin). Both from New York State.

OK, I'm off to have a porter at the brewpub next door. thumbup1.gif

LIked the Dogfish the best...good stuff.
The SS was a bit different. Very good, but my hopes might have been too high for it based upon what everyone here has told me.
The Flying Dog was average...nothing bad, nothing too great.

Since how you taste a beer has so much to do with smell, its how the air is trapped in the glass and presented to your palate. You need surface area for this type of beer (like how a snifter allows maximum surface area at the highest point of the alcohol).

If you drank these beers in a champagne flute, you'd find that the tastes are not as bold and present.

green.gif I don't trust anyone who thinks Tecate is worth drinking unless on sale dirt cheap...and Guinness I like but it's HIDEOUSLY overrated by the "I drink it to prove I'm cool" goobers.

Sam Adams lager is a great brew.  But you kinda lost me w/ the Killians/Yuengling picks.  Mediocre brews at best.  (Unless Yuengling has changed significantly in the last 10 years.)

It has. And IMO Sam Adams is respectable brew....EXCEPT the lager. Puke. Like Guinness, way overrated (marketing agents there probably break their arms patting themselves on the back).

Been drinking way too much Rogue Dead Guy lately. Also a fair bit of Anderson Valley Boont Amber. Both are very good beers, IMO. I also like to mix in an occasional Stone Arrogant Bastard. GD liquor store doesn't stock Ruination. Bastards.

Funny, reading through this again, many of my regular beers are no longer regulars anymore.

bs.gif The glassware makes a huge difference. For example, pour an Ommegang into a champagne flute and into a wide mouthed chalice-looking glass and try some from each. You'll see what I mean.

Keep in mind our tongues only can differentiate between about 4 to 10 different flavors. The rest of the "taste" comes from our olfactory senses. Why do you think you can't taste anything when you have a cold?

To me, if you're going to drop the coin on a good beer, may as well drink it out of the kind of glassware that gives it the best opportunity to show what it's made of. Hell, most of the beer geek bars that I go to will use specific glassware for certain beers. No harm in that at all. Would you go to the trouble of making a killer cheeseburger and then serve it on a 10 for a dollar mushy white bread roll?

Old Rasputin is the only thing so far. Looking forward to the Pranqster when or if it gets here. We've mainly got a bunch of belgians, some Rogue, Avery, Great Divide, Dogfish, Victory and Mendecino. A couple of local breweries have embraced the new law as well. There is a great Scottish ale by Highland brewing, a double IPA by Pisgah brewing (draft only), and a local brewpub has been doing some belgians. I'm like a kid in a candy store. I know I've said this before, but once the beer selection gets to a good point I will try and send you out some stuff. Happy drinking!

I see you here FatM.. er Ray. I'm about to pop open a Great Divide Old Ruffian barley wine. Yumm!!!!

I love the Dogfish 60 minute and the 90 minute is even better.

Stone makes a great IPA as well. Also recently picked up the Great Divide Titan IPA, very good stuff.

Lastly Victory makes a pretty good beer and it is priced right. They are selling the Hop Devil for $5.99 a rack at the beer store I go to in Mass. Its not quite as good as the others I mentioned but its still quality beer.

Drinking another Rogue Dead Guy as I type this. You should really stump your beer store for some Anderson Valley too. Not that the brew is "great" but all of it is solid as hell. Boont Amber is good stuff. And if Lagunitas ever starts sending beer to NC, jump on it immediately.

I've never had anything from Great Divide. So many beers, so little time ...
Ray Stevens
Mendecino is also a very solid brewery. Not as good as Anderson Valley, but very drinkable stuff.

Edited because I'm a moron.

The 60 minute is quite possibly the best IPA I've ever had. Even better than Harpoon.

The 90 Minute, however, sucks. It's something like 8%-9% alcohol. And you can taste the difference - not cool. I like to enjoy my beer. If I'm looking to get trashed, I'll get some whiskey.

From the website:

Our family of Indian Pale Ales includes the 60 Minute I.P.A. and the 90 Minute Imperial I.P.A.. Both feature our unique continuous hopping program, where they receive a single hop addition that lasts over the course of the entire boil (60 and 90 minutes respectively). This breakthrough hopping method makes for a beer that is extremely hoppy without being overly bitter.

While I appreciate the dedication to variety from Avery, I think they do it at the expense of quality some time. Especially when it comes to big beers. I think they add alcohol content to the detriment of flavor from time to time. That said, I haven't had the Kaiser, so I don't know whether it falls into that category or not.

I'm just being introduced to Avery since our new law has changed. Their barley wine was okay, and I certainly wondered about this 'Imperial' Oktoberfest. Seems kind of gimmicky, but I will still be willing to give it a shot. I also saw The Beast at the beer store. Fifteen percent alcohol and about 8 bucks for a 12 oz. bottle. I passed. The jury is still out on this brewery IMO.
