I picked up a rack of this a couple of days ago. I am never disappointed with it. I thought it was great again this year. Definately a beer I look forward to every December.

I just popped the cork on an Allagash Curieux.  Its a Belgian Tripel that has been aged in bourbon barrels.  The oak/bourbon taste is very strong, and is very noticeable in the first sip.  Not sure yet how much I like it, but it is a very interesting taste.  We'll see how it finishes.
*

I really enjoyed the Curieux. It started with a bourbon/smoky flavor but it seemed to lessen as I drank the rest of the bottle. I might have been buzzed by then.

St Bernardus Abt 12 (10%)

Let me know what you think. I thought it was fantastic, but it is certainly not a session beer. It is one to be savored. I need to pick up another one of these. Their Tripel and their Prior 8 are also very good.
*

Interested to hear more about the St. Bernardus beers. Local shop has the 4 packs of the 12, the 6, and the Witbeer in the four packs for around $10-12 bucks.

Beer Advocate Listings. As I said before, the Abt 12 is a sipping beer. I would make it the first beer of the evening. It has a really rich malt profile and has a very smooth finish. It's the fourth highest rated beer at BA, so it is definitely one that you should try. I haven't tried the 6 or the witbier. The witbuer is not my favorite style, but I will probably give it a whirl some time. The 6 should be a fairly easy drinker with the lower alcohol content.

I liked it a lot. The bourbon/smoky flavor you mention overpowers the beer a bit, but I like that taste. Barrel aging really pairs better with malty beers IMO, but doing it with a tripel provided a unique experience. However, at 13 dollars a bottle I don't think I will be revisiting this beer any time soon.

Mendocino Winter Ale -  thumbup1.gif

Not a usual Winter beer as its not spiced. Pretty much a double IPA, but its really good. At 9% its alot easier to drink than DHF 90min, and I couldnt detect any alcohol. Felt more like 7%.

Cascade, Amarillo and Simcoe hops give this big, smooth beer its intensity. If you like beers like SNPA, SNCA, or Titan you would probably like this one. They should make this one a year round release.
*

I know its dorksor to quote your own posts, but I must reiterate:

This Mendocino Winter Ale is freaking fantastic. Id pick this over DFH 90 every time. Its so damn smooth its rediculous, and the only indication of the ABV is the buzz. If not for the buzz Id NEVER believe this was a 9% beer. Even as it warms the aocohol just refuses to show itself. An expertly crafted brew.

Im going to get a case of this stuff and let half of it age until next year.

Drinking my first 6'er of SN Celebration Ale.

Went to the pub today to watch the dogass Cowboys lose and had the following:

Pyramid Snowcap - Average. Not nearly hoppy enough for a seasonal brew. The beer was a whole lot darker than the flavor.

New Belgium Two Degrees Below - Pretty good. Hoppier than the first beer. It was also quite a bit lighter in color, which I found surprising. Still not much of a hop bomb, but it was more memorable than the Pyramid

Breckenridge IPA - Decent enough filler while I was trying to figure out what I wanted next.

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale - This stuff is the ####.

Did anybody else have to pay 15 bucks for the Scaldis Noel? I hope its good...

But I suppose 25.4 oz at 13% is pretty much a wine....and I'd spend that much on a wine.

Also found a HeBrew Miraculous Jewbelation. Haven't seen this one before.

Oooooooh, I gotta seek that one out. How is it? Is it winter spiced? How strong is it (abv%?)?
*

It was really good. Tasted a bit like Celebration Ale. Not super spicy or anything. I can't remember the % though. bag.gif 8.something?

It was at a Mellow Mushroom pizza place if any of you live near one.

Finally got my hands on some Russian River. They were out of the Pliny the Younger (Imperial IPA) which really is a shame. Its been a while.

But I did manage a few bottles of the following

Supplication - Brown ale aged in Pinot Noir wine barrels for one year with sour cherries, Brettanomyces yeast, and Lactobacillus & Pedicoccus bacteria

Damnation - Damnation is our brewmaster's interpretation of a Belgian style Strong Golden Ale. It has extraordinary aromas of banana and pear with mouth filling flavors of sweet malt and earthy hops.

Temptation - Blonde ale fermented with a special strain of yeast and aged in French oak Chardonnay barrels for one year. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using Brettanomyces yeast.

Some good news and bad news on the beer front:

Bad News - Hoegarden to go out of production

More bad news - Hoegarden employees revolt.

Good News - Peter Celis may open a new brewery in/near Austin, TX.

Just tried the Avery 12th Anniversary Saison. Wow, one word came to mind... swill. Overpowering nutmeg aroma and flavor. Also soapy on the aroma. $6.50 for the 22 oz. bottle. I poured it out. I NEVER waste beer but I made an exception.

Such a disappointment.

Trying 4 new ones (to me) tonight.

Lancaster's Milk Stout. Not bad.

Lancaster's Amish Four Grain Pale Ale. green.gif Tastes like lemon juice. Something not quite right about this one.

Otter Creek Vermont Lager. Not bad.

Wild Goose Winter Ale. On the advice on WYB. On deck. Can't be worse than the Four Grain Ale.

Sampled Flying Dog's Snake Dog IPA this evening. Meh. It's decent, but I can think of at least six IPAs that I would rather drink.

I bought a 6 pack the other day and thought the same thing. 60min seems to be all over the map lately...sometimes super hoppy, sometimes malty and sweeter. Still good either way I guess, but I like the turbo-hoppiness version better. Maybe the guys are sampling batches a bit too much at the brewery and forgetting to dry hop?

Average IPA. Not enough hops, and Ive noticed a metallic taste in a few of them. Feels a bit watery sometimes, too.

There are other spicey belgian wits to take its place. That style is becoming a favorite of micros all over the country for its ease to brew and mass appeal.

Fear not.

Its Sierra's version of a Pilsner. Not meant to knock your socks off, just supposed to be a quaffable summer drink (lawnmower beer). I don't know if they have it where you are at, but a Victory Prima Pils is a much better lager.
