Strengths:
- QBs: When healthy, McNabb is a consistent, top-five scoring machine. This was true before TO arrived and will be true after he leaves. That enabled me to wait till the end for backups, since I knew they would only be needed for bye weeks or cover an injury.
- TEs: I did expect to take three TEs, but not nearly as soon as I did. As all my WR5 targets were dropping left and right, TE was the one area where there was decent value left on the board. At 2PPR, having a strong backup will be huge, and this team could end up being among the top-five in TE scoring despite being the last to grab a starter.

Weaknesses
- RBs. At #13, I knew I needed to go RB-RB, since there'd be no one left with any value in later rounds. I just didn't realize just how shaky the remaining RBs would be at those slots. Deuce McAllister and Thomas Jones are about as blah as you can get there, and a lot will depend on the improvement to Cedric Benson and to Deuce's knee. Maroney may just be my savior here -- lots of teams toward the bottom of the first round in April may need to draft a RB, depending on where the FAs go; if he ends up in the right position, you'll see some SSL drafters here snatching him up in the second round.

JEFF GARCIA is the guy I can't believe wasn't drafted.

Everything I've heard out of Detroit camp, news and fans say that he's the sure fire starter this year, lock stock and barrell.

I'm not endorsing his PLAY, but as a starter, he's better than many of the guys drafted.

Now, you may be asking, "If you feel that way, why the hell did you draft Cutler?"

Upside and Offensive Line. I know what Garcia can do. My QBs needed a spark, not a 200 and 2 TDs on a good day type guy like Garcia.

Still it was hard for me to pull. Sometimes, it comes down to gut and with 1 last roster spot, I went with the rook. . I think Cutler will land in either Arizona or in the New York Jets passing game and they BOTH have much better O-Line's than Garcia. Will he need a year of grooming? Maybe, but Pennington and or Warner (always going down) can't be THAT hard to beat.

Still surprising that Garcia didn't land somewhere.

Am I the only one that has heard this news?? Maybe that's it...

SUPER STUDS - McNabb, McAllister, Chambers,

Well, I didn't put T Jones on there because I don't like how they started to in Lovie's terms "rest" him. If he can hold off Benson 1 more year, (that's a very big if), this team could roll...

2nd Tier - T Jones, Rod, Donte, Moulds - Lots of upside with these guys and a very high FLOOR.

McNabb has his big injury out of the way so I'd feel safe drafting him.
Deuce has been a victim of injuries, he can't get hurt again can he? Why not draft Antowain Smith over Musa Smith?

Moulds needs to find a new home because Losman hates him. He's a big question mark next year. If he lands in a favorable situation like Tampa or Miami, he'd be great.

Rod does it every year, but when will be his last?

Up and Coming - Alex Smith and Maroney. Alex looked great and should put up 40-50 catches. Maroney is a sleeper. He looks great and in the right situation could explode.

Overall, great draft. Good depth and solid, balanced, SAFE team that will compete.

That was a close call -- basically it came down to three things:

1) It was no guarantee that Antowain would be re-signed as Deuce's backup.
2) Antowain split time with Stecker last year.
3) Better to take a chance at someone young and improving, who has at least a chance of being a starter, than someone old and declining, who will undoubtedly be a backup wherever he signs.

The real problem is that, coming off an knee injury, Deuce is not a first round RB, period. But drafting Antowain there seems like it would compound the error.

This team is scary good. Possibly the best survivor team ever drafted on paper. Bruce and Williamson as WR 4/5! He has three potential Rd 1 VBD players with another three that could finish as round two material. A strong argument could be made that he has a top 3 RB, two top 3 WR, a top 3 TE, and a top 3 kicker.

On paper, this is one the worst teams I've ever drafted. Almost everyone either spent a large amount of time out with injuries, or are Rooks. I going to have to depend on those players coming back to healthy status. But, if they do, most of these guys can put up monster numbers. But we'll see.

Family Matters
After reviewing the teams fro the draft, I see that appear to be on top of the rest. After that it's a crap shoot. As I make my comments I will clarify on players I have questions about that could affect the ranking.

As pointed out by LHUCKS and others, this was an excellent draft. Well managed top to bottom. Excellent selections made by all. Congrats everyone on doing a good job.

I will start with my top 2:
Radballs:
QB is the big question mark. I fully expect Vick to start all year even though he's lost. lol But clearly unless Brad Johnson is starting he could go out early. Vick has been known to put up bad weeks and if BJ isn't starting he could be at risk during Vick's bye week any other number of weeks. Of course having LT, Moss & TO means he might have quit a few amnesty weeks to utilize and keep the dream alive. On balance, with what we know right now, this is the team to beat. Nice job to Rads on an opportunistic draft.

Shadowfax:
Shadow quietly had an excellent draft. The only question marks will be his QB2 and TE. Of course that could easily be the downfall but I suspect with Pitts increased passing attack that Miller should see some increased looks. As long as he survives the Manning bye week he could go all the way. Nice draft Shadow!

The rest of the teams are also teams that can win this thing. No one had a terrible draft IMO and as we know things can and will change. Some teams will lose starters before the 1st game even starts. But here are some comments on the remaining teams in order of the draft:

DUKE:
QB is ok if unspectular. Lead by Plummer and backed by Carr should provide about average scoring on a consistent basis. RB is outstanding led by LJ. Brown should be a respectable RB2 and provide enough support to make up for the QB scoring. WR is ok but might be inconsistent. No TE2 could be a problem as Shockey isn't exactly the picture of health. Yet with LJ and Shockey this team can contend.

Rush:
Excellent QB's. Alexander will carry the RB group and Davis and Martin should combine to give you good RB2 numbers most weeks. WR and TE could be problematic for this team and likely inconsistent. But with the and QB strength this could be a team tat goes deep.

Cowboy:
While you will likely have 2 QB's most of the year, you had to invest a great deal of picks to get there and I wonder if that might of hurt you in other areas except the last pick. RB & WR are very strong and will carry this team. TE is ok and at times will be spectacular. Definately a team that can go long if the QB performs.

Team Legacy:
QB is the one position that has to come through and you are riding Leftwich for this team. If Lefty stays healthy you'll be fine. QB2 is a poss problem but I think you'll at least have someone there. RB1 is excellent but RB2 has questions. Because you have Tiki I likr this group. WR1 & 2 are awesome. The WR3 might be iffy and if Curtis doesn't perform could be a weakness for you. TE's are solid. So I can see this team challenging.

LHUCKS:
QB should be ok as long as McNair stays healthy. I like the 3 RB's but you cannot have any injuries or you are doomed. 9 WR's should provide something but I'm not sure what. Depends on Jones and MOss developing into a starter potentially. TE is solid. Again, this team might be a contender if you remain healthy.

Ruds:
I really like this team and was borderline top 4. Cpep is a key along with Edwards. Both are coming off injury and yet they are great athletes. So if they get back to near 100% then I really like this team. If not this team may not last long because Garrard will not likely see the field. The RB's may become a strength of this team. Williams can be a great find if he lands in the right spot. Perry will catch alot of balls and score decently for you. Holmes is a wildcard in that he might retire or he could take over for an injured LJ. The WR's are s solid group and deep. TE1 is outstanding. Could be a contender if thing fall right.

Twilight:
The big question(s) here surround the RB's. Foster is always hurt. Caddy & Bell are fragile it seems. Shelton, I' don't know. Do if healthy this can be a solid group. If not it's bye bye early.

Family Matters:
If Collins starts the QB's are excellent. While Rudi will be a steady performer, the remaining backs may not do anything worthwhile. Yet if Davis is in the mix in Car and Gado/Davenport are in the mix in GB then this could become a strength on this team. That's a wide range and no way to know right now. WR's look good and if Bennett remains healthy should put up sold numbers. Excellent D's. A team that could go early or contend if things work out.

Perry Van Hook:
Love the TE's but questions abound in other areas. Most especially the QB. No doubt Frye will be starting in Cleve but I doubt he puts up better than avg numbers. The other 3 are questionable for sure thought Young could prove to be your best of the group. Spending 4 picks on QB's make it tought on the remaining team and left you more questions. RB is interesting because Faulk will do ok but Bennett and Barber are contengent on others not playing well. So not sure what to expect. I like the WR starters but there's no depth to help you becasue of the QB's. So again if things fall right and your WR's remain healthy you could contend.

ACP:
If PAlmer is healthy then he's an excellent pick. The risk here is that you could end up with no QB to start the season. If that happens then you have an early exit. I like the RB group and the WR's are solid. Not having a TE2 might hurt on the bye but you can overcome that. Definately a team that can contend.

Abrecher:
A good TE group and excellent WR's leave this team a contender. With McNabb back and healthy this team looks solid. RB's have alot of questions and leave you vulnerable. If Duece is not great out the gate and Jones is back up then you've got problems that might lead to an early exit. Otherwise very solid group.

Fro:
This team looks balanced with great QB's, good RB's and WR's. TE should be ok but have ??'s. A rebound by KJ and/or Gore getting meaningful reps and you could be very strong. At the same time the RB's could become a weakness if unhealthy.

Fiddles:
Your QB's might be a great strength if my QB sleeper Warner pans out. Brady we know about but I think Warner will surprise. RB maight be pretty good if Pittman stays in the mix. WR's are very good. TE's might be decent but I think inconsistent. Not sure if the WR/QB's can carry or not but I would not be surprised to see this team in the end.

Rzrback77:
The 2 big question marks here are Favre and Green. If plying they make this team ver strong. If not it could be an early exit. RB may be ok anyway because I expect Parker and White to either start or get significant carries. I'm not sure what to make of the WR's. Can these WR's make 3 decent scores every week? I have my doubts. If they do then you have a contender.

Good luck to all!

Drafting last undoubtedly affected my draft as I began weak at RB and scrambled behind runs several times.

I am another who thinks that large (16 team leagues) must begin with a solid RB. Being at the bottom made that difficult. Selected Willie Parker hoping that he remains the main back at Pitt and that he beneifts from Bettis leaving. Not sure that will happen but like him over the other choices remaining. Briefly considered Kevin Jones, but like Willie better. With a potential weakness at RB, thought about taking another with Willie, but liked the potential of leading at TE better. Hope that Gates has another year similar to his last two.

At 3/4, felt I had to get an RB with my starter so questionable. Considered Ricky Williams as well as A. Green and L White, but got burned on him year before last and just couldn't take him over them. Had planned on taking a QB with one of the RBs, but when McNabb, Hass, and Brady were taken immediately before my picks, decided to wait. May regret that.

Felt boxed in at 5/6 and had to take a QB. Briefly considered Simms, but thought upside of Favre much worth the risk. Thought about taking two QBs, but truly none left were worthy. Also needed a WR that I could count on and that list was also dwindling.

Would have taken 2nd QB at 7/8, but Carr, Boller, and Sims were gone so went WR/WR. Very difficult choices here, but went safe with Muhsin and upside with Michael Clayton. Jimmy Smith was also considered here.

Was very happy to get Brooks at 9/10. Considered E Parker and S Parker, but decided to go with Brunell as my third risky QB. All three of them have risks, Favre retirement, Brooks no job, Brunell similar to Brooks, with less upside, and I could be burned badly by that group. But, they also could be great.

Back to the WRs at 11/12. Like Booker if Miami doesn't add or if he goes elsewhere. I also like Pinkston to return to the Eagles, but should have waited a few more rounds. ARE and Drew Carter were on the short list with the two I got.

Considered defense at 13/14, but still didn't like the Wrs and there wasn't much left. I think that A Davis can be #2 to Branch at NE if Givens leaves and like the choice, but I must be in the minority on that.

Grabbed a potential first year player at TE in Pope. I considered grabbing a Kicker along with the Arizona defense and going solo with Gates at TE.

Got a reliable kicker very late in Dawson and added Finneran to bolster the team weakness at 17/18.

Took a local product as a hopeful RB. He could be one of those 3rd round RBs that plays a lot. It could happen. Also got Shawn Bryson who has caught a lot of passes over the past few years and if my risky RBs don't land jobs, that will help.

QB - very risky and will be very thin if Favre retires.

RB - Need Willie Parker to keep job and at least one of A Green, L White, or J Norwood to play a lot.

WR - Went with a couple of reliable ones ( D Mason & Muhsin) and lots of depth to cover one or two scores per week.

TE - Hope that Gates keeps on keeping on

Defense - Arizona had several high draftees on defense last year and produced well early until injuries. Hope for continued improvement

Kicker - Dawson is solid

I remain to be in the minority of thought that the few points produced by kickers and defense can be risked on bye weeks and poor performances and overcome with additional depth at WR especially.

I agree on kickers, not on defense. There will be a lot of teams that score 10-15 points in a given week, and a few that score even higher. Unless your one defense turns out to be the next coming of the 2004 Bears, you're starting off in a hole.

And really, what would it have cost you to draft a second? You'd have to forgo your 8th WR or a random third-down back who can only give you 5-6 points, and only if your starting RBs fall on their face.

Before this one started, I took a look at the WSL draft from last year, and found that there were really only four types of late-round picks that contributed much of anything to their teams:
1) kickers
2) defenses
3) backups and young players who unexpected ended up in a starting role
4) rookies who ended up in a great situation

That's about it.

Commercial interruption - if any of you guys want an official Pro Bowl tshirt, I have a line on getting them cheaper than the normal outlets where they are $25.

I think I can get them and ship them to you for less than that. There are two basic styles - one just plain with logo and one with the player's names on them.

If you are interested, shoot me PM with style preference and size you need - I will be getting them tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

I can't offer the service for all the other goodies or I would have to buy a new suitcase to get it all home, although if anyone wants the mini or junior or full size Pro Bowl footballs, sweatshirts, jerseys, I can get you a price and ship it from here for whatever the actual costs are.

Excellent QB's. Alexander will carry the RB group and Davis and Martin should combine to give you good RB2 numbers most weeks. WR and TE could be problematic for this team and likely inconsistent. But with the  and QB strength this could be a team tat goes deep.

Great analysis FM!

Here is my thoughts on my team:

QB
Brees SD
T Green KC
Rivers SD

I am happy with my QB's. I expect Brees to continue as the starter for SD. I felt it important to grab Rivers either as Brees' backup or possibly as a starter for another team.

RB
S Alex SEA
D Davis HOU
Martin NYJ
Morris SEA
Houston NYJ

I expect Alexander to stay on in Seattle and continue to be the consistent anchor to this team. I wish I had more faith in DD & C-Mart as my #2/3 RB's. If Davis leaves and gets to start for someone else (not likely), he should be top 10. If he stays and they draft Bush (probable), he should still grab a lot of passes and close to an even split on carries. Martin = ? Morris & Houston = must haves IMHO.

WR
Harrison IND
Bryant CLE
S Parker KC
M Rob MIN
Bradford HOU
Welker MIA

I am not thrilled here, but in a 16 teamer, you have to be weak somewhere. I do like Bryant & Parker, but would rather they were my #3 & #4 guys. The bottom 3 will hopefully come in handy a few weeks.

TE
Wiggins MIN
Pollard DET

FM was harder on these guys than I am. Wiggins finished last year as the #10 TE with 191 pts and #12 with 227 pts in '04. Pollard finished as #14 with 158 pts in his 1st year in Detroit. While neither are studs, I expect them to combine for better than average points each week.

K
Stover BAL
Carney NO

Safe

D/ST
Colts IND
Titans TEN

I like the upside of an improving Dungy D/ST. The Titans will hopefully have a couple decent weeks.

Overall, I am not expecting to win it all, but I hope to make deep. I feel a whole lot better than I did with last year's squad!

Edit to say that I am doing an analysis on each team, but it will take a day or so to get done (busy time).

Rush,

Let me offer more insight as to part of the reason I am concerned about your TE's. It has more to do with what I think might happen in their cases. For example, in DET, Pollard likely did better because of all the WR problems and the QB's inability to throw deep. There's a better than likely chance that Det performs better this year and that might eat into his numbers somewhat. As for Wiggins, other than week 17 his production dropped considerably leaving me to wonder if their philosophy has chamged or that with getting Nate back and Krob getting better that maybe they don't need to throw to the TE as much. Add in the new coaching and uncertainty at QB and I wonder what impact that will have on the TE. Minn isn't a team that is committed to throwing to the TE so it leaves you wondering.

Brees and Trent Green is an A+ combo. If you dont land one of the Super Stud QBs, having these 2 guys qualify.

Enter Superstud Alexander. Most consistent player in the game. You also landed the Jets ground game (sharing carries most likely) and Dom Davis, who will mentor Reggie ... for about a game in the preseason.. I see Reggie getting about 12-14 carries a game in year 1, so that leaves plenty for Dom. IF he can stay healthy. He will break more than his fair share in his time. Dom along with the Jets give you a solid RB2.

So, lets say you grab 20 from your QB, 25 from SA, 15 from your RB2, now we're into the Wide out situation.

Marvin, still top 10 wideout gives you 20 more. You already have 80 going into WR2. Bryant will get you 10-15 a game, after that, you're hoping for one of those guys to contribute a 10 spot. 102 a game without a TE.

I like Pollard's second year. Throw in Wiggins and you'll safely earn 10 a week here.

I'd say that 112 minus K and D puts you in the upper 3rd, and possibly upper 4th.

Good draft.

You make a good point. But when you are placing your TE results on these 2 with so many questions then you might feel a little uncomfortable. I have no idea what will happen to the TE position next year and yet he's counting on that. Makes me a little nervous is all I'm saying.

Some poss ggod news for Team Family Matters regarding QB2 Collins. I did did not copy the whole article, it's here: http://www.insidebayarea.com/sports/ci_3514884:
[QUOTE]Shell hints at staying with Collins

"All I can say is Kerry Collins has been an outstanding quarterback," Shell said at his introductory press conference last Saturday. "Matter of fact I just spoke to Kerry before I came down here. He is excited about moving forward next year. He is an exciting quarterback. I think he has a chance to be great for us. But those issues will be addressed down the road."
If Shell's already getting on the phone with the guy and talking him up, this sure sounds like a coach counting on Collins to be his QB in 2006. In fact, quite frankly, the Raiders have done nothing to suggest they aren't still completely in love with Collins, as revolting a thought as that might be to 97.9 percent of the fans out there.

Remember Al Davis' comments the day Norv Turner was fired? "I think Kerry did adequately well considering other factors maybe not seen by the press or fans," Davis said. "He had no running game, and our pass protection slipped."

We'll soon find out how serious the love affair is. Collins is due a $2.5 million roster bonus in March, and if the Raiders pay it, it stands to reason they're probably keeping him. He's supposed to make $6 million in base salary as well, and with easily attainable incentives, he'll have an ungodly cap figure of nearly $13 million.

That will have to be renegotiated, of course, or the issue will be resolved for OaklaIt's more likely that they'll rework the contract. Davis intimated in early January that Collins' Raiders future could well be determined by what was available on the free-agent market and in trade. But right now, the landscape is grim.

Well, I guess FM is an optimist who sees the glass half full. I do agree its possible, but a lot of salary chopping must be done for Collins to be wanted back.

I also think there is less chance of Aaron Brooks starting for the Saints as Collins for the Raiders, but the circumstances are remarkably similar. Both guys underperformed last year, both were benched late, both have new coaches. The Saints guy has a rep of helping QBs, who is to say, AB could restructure and return? It could happen. Well, probably not, but is Collins return any more likely?
