Full Version: VBD For Fantasy Baseball?

I was wondering if anyone has ever used or was planning on trying to use the VBD for fantasy baseball. I would like some input from some who might be a little bit more savvy with the VBD than I. Thanks in advance.

It is my understanding that the concept of VBD originally came from baseball. I can't remember the name of the game, but people would use the player stats from each team and play head to head games like Cubs vs. Reds, and then use a combination of stats and dice rolls to play the games.

Anyway, I just googled Value Based Drafting Baseball, and several sights popped up. The BaseballTangent and InsiderBaseball both look like good places to start.

I've heard of people using the Draft Dominator for Baseball, essentially substituting P for QB, 1st Base for RB, 2nd Base for WR, etc... I'm just not sure what they use for projections though.

Thanks Bruce. I actually did subscribe to Insiderbaseball and ran the numbers with my league settings and was appauled at the awful results. Perhaps I don't want to face the truth, but I hate the set up and I think the numbers are innaccurate. It had me taking Juan Pierre at #8 overall for example as the third best outfielder behind Vlad and Ichiro. This would be horrible. Last year neither Ichiro nor Pierre were in the top 50 players overall under my points system. And Pierre was the 14th ranked OF last year.

I love the way the VBD is set up on this site with that excel sheet. It is very easy to use. The insiderbaseball one is awful.

I have made all my own projections and have been doing fantasy baseball for 6 years now. If anyone is willing to tweak the input portion VBD to a baseball format so that all the baseball positions and potential stat categories are covered, I'll enter my projections manually and share them with whomever might want to. Good idea? no?

Try this site. They offer a free ddrafting tool that is based on "Replacement Value Theory." Here is thier description of RVT:
An Example...
The sabermetric algorithms that the Mock Draft Software uses to evaluate players is based on the replacement level theory. Here is a very simple example explaining the basics of it.

Imagine a league that has 3 outfielders and 3 shortstops to draft, with three owners getting to select one from each of those two positions.

Your make believe outfielders are...
Player A (Value = 20)
Player B (Value = 16)
Player C (Value = 14)
--------------------------------
Player D (Value = 11)
Player E (Value = 6)

Your 3 make believe shortstops are...
Player F (Value = 15)
Player G (Value = 9)
Player H (Value = 6)
------------------------------
Player I (Value = 3)
Player J (Value = 2)

Now, to calculate the Replacement Level Value for each player, simply subtract from his value the replacement level at his position.

Player A (RPV) = 20 - 14 = 6
Player B (RPV) = 16 - 14 = 2
Player C (RPV) = 14 - 14 = 0
Player D (RPV) = 11 - 14 = -3
Player E (RPV) = 6 - 14 = -8

Player F (RPV) = 15 - 6 = 9
Player G RPV) = 9 - 6 = 3
Player H (RPV) = 6 - 6 = 0
Player I (RPV) = 3 - 6 = -3
Player J (RPV) = 2 - 6 = -4

You can see from this example, that Player F has the highest RPV (replacement value) of 9. If you had the first pick in this 6 player draft (3 OFs, 3 SSs) your best bet would be to draft Player F. You are atleast gauranteed Player C in a snake draft at the other position. This would give you players of value 15 + 14 = 29, which couldn't be beat as long as everyone drafted the best available player.

Looks an awful lot like VBD to me. I am not sure about how they combine the 4,5 or 6 batting or pitching catagories to come up with an overall ranking though. They must weight the individual categories for batting or pitching to come up with the final rankings. Hope this helps.

Wow -- like some little Karma bug in my head, for the first time in two months I decided to check my favorite forum, and sure enough there is a new post... scary.

Bruce, the name of the game was (is) Strat-O-Matic.

I've used this tool before, however I'd recommend the baseballtangent.com drafting app. Very nice and tweakable, IMO. I'm using that (along with ADP) to make my cheatsheets this year.

Where do you get the ADP? I use baseball tangent as well, for projections. I didn't realize it uses VBD, though.
