Sucks. Seems like a good guy, and was incredibly talented.

QUOTE
Rocco Baldelli will be sidelined indefinitely - but is not retiring - because of what he said are "some type of metabolic and/or mitochondrial abnormalities,'' a condition that leaves him feeling extremely fatigued after just a brief workout.

"When I say "fatigued" my body is literally spent after a very short amount of time out on the field which makes it extremely frustrating and difficult but it's kind of a reality right now,'' he said during a 20-minute session with reporters before Wednesday's game.

Baldelli said there has been no exact diagnosis but the consensus of several experts was the rare condition that limits the ability of his muscles to recover. "Basically somewhere along the line ... either my body is making or producing or storing ATP the right way and therefore not allowing, apparently, my muscles to work as they should, and especially recover like they're supposed to on a day-to-day basis. It becomes very difficult to go out and literally be on the field every day and play.''

"I think the best way to describe it is literal muscle fatigue and cramping way before my body should be feeling these things,' '' Baldelli said. "I would go out there and I was pretty much incapable of doing basic baseball activities, running and hitting and throwing. These were things I had done my whole life pretty easily and at some point within the last two years, we're nto exactly sure why, these things started to change.''

Baldelli, 26, moved to verge of tears several times in discussing details of his condition for the first time. He said he did consider the condition life-threatening and would do "whatever" he could to get back on the field, but there was no timetable for a return. The Rays will place him on the disabled list to start the season.

Before Baldelli spoke, Rays manager Joe Maddon offered this perspective: "It's tough to figure out. It's something that he feels. It's something that unless you're inside that body you have no idea what it feels like. And it's unfortunate because you're talking about a gifted athlete right here. One of the more gifted athletes I would think in all of the American League given a chance to play on a daily basis. So it's hard. It's hard for him. It's harder for him than for us. It's frustrating for us, it's a career for him. It's a way of life. It's supporting his family in the future. It's difficutl. So we're just trying to pay attention to him and respect, because you have no idea what he feels like and it's frustrating. But it's even more frustrating for him.''

Baldelli, 26, has been sidelined since sustaining a hamstring strain in a May 15 game, and has played just twice this spring, last on March 4, because his legs haven't recovered well and don't feel right.
"It's not really encouraging right now, it hasn't really been progressing,'' Maddon said before Wednesday's game. "It's one of those day by day situations and it's not moving forward.''

A shame. I have been bullish on him forever because of his skills. Hope he can go forward and live a relatively healthy life.

That Rays OF sure thinned out fast. It went from Crawford, Upton, Rocco, Dukes and Delmon, all elite prospects -- to Crawford, Upton, Jonny Gomes and the corpse of Cliff Floyd.

Bad deal for him. Definitely explains his inability to stay healthy.

Makes the Young trade look even worse than it already did.

He is not even replacement level talent in the bigs right now and it is his own doing. He was a terrible cancer to the team.

Not even replacement level? I love that meme - it's meaningless. I can think of many teams he'd start for and be a serious upgrade over who they've got out there right now. He's played one full year in the majors, and it wasn't exactly a wash out . I have a hard time understanding how someone can be a terrible cancer to a team that was going nowhere. Yeah he's pulled some bonehead moves, but that's correctable. Albert Belle seemed to have a decent career.

This guy has legitimate all-star, possible HOF potential. They dealt him for a middle of the rotation pitcher (on a team that's already flush with pitching prospects), a good SS and a middle of the road prospect leaving them in the position of having to start Jonny Gomes and Rocco Baldelli (now those ARE replacement level players considering Baldelli's injury history).

Bad move even if you think Jennings is a lock to be a successful major leaguer. Time will bear me out.

Garza is more than a "middle of the rotation" guy and Morlan is definitely, definitely more than a middle of the road prospect.

Couple those along with calling Delmon a potential Hall of Fame guy after his blistering .316 OBP campaign, and you win the Hyperbole of the Day award.

I don't think you know what replacement level means. And it certainly isn't meaningless.

I don't? So this description isn't accurate? And I still contend it's meaningless, because I think it's too based on past statistics and doesn't account for potential improvement well enough. And saying Young isn't even replacement level at this point in his career is truly meaningless - he's just getting started.

And beyond that I'd like to think that now that the Rays are down to having to put Floyd, Rodriguez or Gomes out there every day, Young would at least have made iit up to "replacement level".

That's what I'd expect from a super homer.gif like you in regards to the Rays - pretty par for the course from what I've seen of your posting.

Maybe Garza can become a #2 SP, but I don't see much more for him than that, and I doubt he achieves it.

Sickles gives Morlan a B grade. Baseball America doesn't have him in their top 100, and I haven't seen him get mentioned near the top of anyone else's rankings either. Sounds middle of the road to me, maybe upper middle.

Yeah, there's no way Young will imrpove on his OBP - no way at all. He's nothing, not even replacement level. lol.gif

No, that's right. You were using it wrong. Just because there are players starting on teams that Young is better than doesn't mean he's better than replacement level. It just means that those other teams are starting guys that are worse than players that are freely available in the minor leagues for next to nothing.

I fully admit DY is a potential stud but he wasn't much better than replacement level last year. It isn't meaningless. It means that he isn't very good at the Major League level right now. And you're severely underestimating Garza.

Not that I care what you think necessarily, but just about anybody here will tell you I'm a level-headed fan of my teams. So save the "you're just a homer" crap for the mook Laker or Pac-10 fans.

Hard to argue with this analysis though -- "Maybe Garza can become a #2 SP, but I don't see much more for him than that, and I doubt he achieves it."

This is rich. Cappy calling himself level headed about Delmon Young.

He's changed opinions about him as quick as the logo on DY's hat did.

I remember it as if were just last season when I was told repeatidly that I was an idiot because I'd take Billy Butler over any of the young up and comers, outside of Upton, in the Tampa Bay system.

Mainly, I said I'd take BB over DY because all things being equal as a hitter, DY was a head case and would become a problem.

BB out hit, out OBP, out Slugged DY last year and will continue to do so throughout his career. BB also didn't get run out of town within his first year in the bigs because he's an ###. The only thing DY can bring to the plate that BB can't is a little bit of speed. Otherwise, BB did, and will continue to, outperform DY as a big league hitter.
