Eh, not much buzz. He is what he is. He had a great start last year and then came back to earth. I like him, but he's no more than an average #3 right now.

Really? I think Guthrie is becoming a very good pitcher. He was cruising vs. the Cubs the other night, before giving up singles after getting to 0-2 counts on back-to-back hitters, followed by the 3-run HR by Edmonds. Even there, he had a 7-1 lead and I would rather see him make the Cubs hit the ball.

He is currently #3 in innings pitched in the AL, #12 in ERA, and #9 in WHIP and opposing batting average. Might not be an ace yet, but I see him as a strong #2 guy.

all right, 2 out of 3 to end the Cubs' 14-game home win streak and now onto to DC to face the woeful Nats, followed by home series with KC and Texas. Could see the O's going 6-3 or 7-2 over this upcoming stretch.

I didn't know those stats you threw out. Pretty impressive. He is 3rd in the AL for HR's allowed at 15 and has a 4-7 record. He's also 29 years old. I guess a case could be made for him being a #2, but I still haven't heard any buzz about him.

I would love to see a 30-3 thrashing of the Rangers. What a low point in the season last year. Didn't that game end the undefeated record for Trembley?

I may be wrong about Trembley. It might have been just the game the wheels fell off for the rest of the season and a strong reason why a lot of people thought the O's would lose 100 games this year and would be the worst team in MLB.

The 30-3 game was the first game of a double-header on the same day Tremblay was named permanent manager. They lost the second game too, but not by 27 runs. IIRC, they were outscored like 42 to 7 on the day.

Ah, yes. Trembley had been managing for a while and the team was doing pretty well. They name him the skipper for the remainder of the year and this game happens right after that. Uhg...

Seasons series resulted in a 3-3 split with each team winning two of three at home. The interesting thing is that the Nats scored 4-1-3 runs to the O's 2-9-2 in the three games. Both the first and third games could have gone either way. Oh, and BTW, having pitchers hit sucks.

Seems like baserunning is where they really struggle these days

I have a feeling this team is about to hit the wall. It's been a great 3 months, but now is the time to refocus on 2010. Huff. Millar. Sherrill. Pack your bags! Even Roberts, if they can get another 5-player package.

I agree about Huff, Milar and and Sherrill, not Roberts though. I still need a reason to watch this club. Hoping for Jones to blossom and Markakis to reach .300 is not enough. Pack up Mora, Payton, Hernandez, Cabrera and Guthrie. I still need Markakis, Jones, Scott and Roberts. I've been to 7 games this season and plan to go to plenty more. If they take away all the competitiveness out of this team, I'll just stay home and watch them on MASN.

Unfortunately, I also agree about this team potentially hitting a wall. Sherrill is at more innings pitched now than he has ever pitched in the Bigs. We won 17 out of 27 one run games before back to back one run losses to WAS and KC. I hope they can keep it up around .500 ball, but I would not be completely shocked to see them stumble a bit. :fingerscrossed:

Need to win on a Sunday for the first time since the first weekend or it is three straight series loses, and four of five.

I'm not sure it is bad to have a bit of reality sit in about now as I was starting to fear that Peter Angelos would be vetoing trades where we are selling off veteran contracts and insisting on buying for the "playoff run." I still can't get over the disaster of '96 veto, wire to wire in '97 or not.

You guys are going to have to do something about the catchers sunglasses. What a beating. It was like watching some B-List horror flick for half the time.

How far is it to get over that cheesy led wall? That was a pretty big shot it looked like.

I think most knew coming in that the pitching was going to be shaky this season & it appears that the staff is hitting the wall now. The bullpen, which was better than anyone had a right to expect the 1st 2 months, is frazzled because the starters just haven't gone deep enough, often enough (though both Guthrie & Cabrera are top 11 AL in IP) and Sherrill's been shaky at best recently.

Offensively, they continue to scratch & claw. Markakis, Hiff, & Roberts are having fine seasons. Jones has his average up to .280 & continues to progress. Mora & Hernandez have been struggling - it would be nice to see both get hot in the 2nd half.

I still think they should look at trading Huff, Millar, Sherrill, and maybe a couple of others. But they have pretty good chemistry & getting rid of their vets would probably cause the bottom to fall out.

I'm not sure how much leadership Huff and Sherrill bring to the club. I'd like to trade both of them, especially Sherrill. If anyone gives up something decent for an all-star closer who is 2nd in the AL in saves, I say take it. I think he's a fraud. Never can close the game out smoothly. Always gives up a walk and the outs are usually hard hit, and a lot of times, caught on the warning track.

Hernandez isn't good anymore. People are running on him and his throws are erratic. With Wieters taking over sooner than later, we have little need for him. Palmer was going over his mechanics during last nights game. He said how awful it was and difficult it makes it for the pitchers because he never sets up a target. I watched, and Palmer is right. The pitchers have nothing to throw to. Maybe he's trying not to give away the location, but you have to set up a target.

Jones used to be just above .200, he must be batting over .300 recently to get his average to .280. Love the guy and his potential.

CAN WE PLEASE GET A SS??? Bynum is not big league talent. That ball between his legs was one of the worst endings to a game I have seen. Fehey had a ball go between his legs last night in the 9th. You can't have that. Neither one of them can hit so they need to be able to field. I mean, this is the MAJOR LEAGUES!!! Why can't you find someone to field and bat .200?

Loewen is going to "give up pitching" and will try to become a position player.

Wow, I didn't see that coming. He was the #4 overall pick in 2002. I guess that didn't work out the way we had hoped it would.

BALTIMORE — Orioles left-hander Adam Loewen has abandoned his career as a pitcher because of a stress fracture in his left elbow, the same injury that sidelined him last season and twice put him on the disabled list this year.

The 24-year-old native of Surrey, B.C., intends to return to the majors as an outfielder.

Had Loewen opted for a second operation on his elbow, it would have taken him at least 18 months to return. And there was no guarantee he would be pain-free or would not re-injure himself.

"I won't have to have surgery. If I did choose the other road with pitching, it would be a long road with no clear ending," Loewen said Saturday. "It's not a simple decision, but it's right there in front of me."

The fourth overall pick in the 2002 amateur draft, the six-foot-six Loewen made his major league debut with Baltimore in 2006. His final numbers as a pitcher: 8-8 with a 5.38 ERA in 35 games, including 28 starts.

"The good news is that we have a player that is very much a hitting prospect as well," Orioles president Andy MacPhail said. "And he has assured me he can still hit and wants to hit. So, the club is prepared to embark on that path with him. Once the season is over, we will start career No. 2 for Adam Loewen."

Loewen pitched in six games last season before being placed on the disabled list with a stress fracture. He had a 4 1/2-inch titanium screw inserted into his elbow and declared himself completely healthy in February, but he experienced elbow soreness in late April and was placed on the disabled list.

He was activated on June 30 and pitched in three games before leaving the mound in what turned out to be his final pitching performance, on July 6 against Texas.

After visiting several doctors, Loewen realized his elbow wouldn't be able to take the stress of throwing up to 100 times in the span of three hours.

"They believe the only reason my arm feels the way it does is strictly from throwing off the mound (with) high intensity," he said. "So, if I was playing first base or outfield, or having time between throws, not throwing 90 to 93 off the mound, then my arm is going to be fine. It's not going to bother me swinging the bat.

"...It was devastating news, but I always had a backup plan so I'm sure I didn't take it as hard as anyone else would."

Before being drafted by the Orioles, Loewen pitched and played first base for Chipola Junior College in Florida, where he batted .353 with a homer and 38 RBIs in 45 games.

"We're extraordinarily fortunate we have an athlete that is capable of pursuing a career as a position player, which is not unprecedented in our game," MacPhail said.

Loewen hopes to duplicate the success enjoyed by Rick Ankiel of the St. Louis Cardinals, who has revived his career in the field after struggling with his control as a starting pitcher.

"It's been five or six years since I've hit competitively in college, where I did hit," Loewen said. "It's going to take time and it's going to be a real challenge. But Rick Ankiel did it, so I have someone before me that I can relate to."

Still, Loewen will miss being a pitcher.

"I'm always going to be a pitcher. There is no doubt about it. I love to do it," he said. "I've been doing it since I was nine years old. It's going to be tough to let it go."

Sometimes all the stars seem aligned up in such a way that there seems to be no way that your team can win. Reading the paper or listening to the radio today basically seemed to mean that Oriole fans should just hope for rain. Then your team simply goes out and gets the good old fashion win.

Team still has a lot of work to do, especially with the starters (Liz was sent down today), but improving to 2 and 15 on Sundays is
nice.

And WTF is up with the trade deadline passing without a move. Huff is the hottest hitter in baseball right now. Surely someone had offers for him. I'm glad we kept Roberts, but Sherrill, Huff, Millar, Hernandez, Cabrera and Mora should have been on the market. Very disappointed we didn't make some more moves to help our future.

I guess we'll hope to continue playing close to .500 ball and maybe not finish dead last in the East... Yippee!!

I'm also disappointed that we didn't raid some other's team farm system, but not entirely surprised that there were no takers for Oriole veterans. But I had the same disappointment last Aug 1 when nothing was done, and it seemed to workout pretty good. The Orioles are ten wins away from avoiding 100 loses, which was about as much of goal as Oriole fan's could hope for in April. They are on pace for about 78 or 79 wins (although the schedule is pretty tough) which no one but ultimate homers was hoping for prior to this season.

Nice major league deput for Waters last night. 8 innings, 2 hits and no runs against the best team in baseball(LAA). I was joking with a buddy of mine yesterday about how they were throwing this guy to the wolves and that it was going to be some serious batting practice for LAA. I stand corrected.

My guess is that it was kind of a fluke, though I hope I'm wrong.

Also, Adam Jones looks like he's done for the season, which sucks. But I suddenly find myself a little glad they didn't deal Jay Payton. If there wasn't Payton to plug into Jones's spot, suddenly we're looking at guys like Tike Redman in the everyday line-up again, and the next thing you know the Orioles finish the season on another 12-38 streak.

This has been a very positive year. Would like to see them keep playing hard and finish near .500.

So the new guy they brought up to fill Jones' spot(luis montanez) gets a HR in his first ever MLB at bat. He's been crushing the ball in Bowie and brought the power up with him. He did get fooled pretty bad on a ball hit in the corner of left field.

I have a feeling last night was a fluke as well. Even so, it was a good fluke to watch. They interviewed Waters during today's game. Doesn's sound like the sharpest tool in the shed...

I've heard his #1 in the AL in quality starts, though I don't know if that's true or not. With a little more run support he could pretty easily have 15 wins and be edging into Cy Young discussion.

There are a few Orioles fans around here, but do any of them realize that this team was 7-30, since the middle of August? That is appallingly bad. Did they just mail in the final three weeks after they were sure they wouldn't lose 100 games? It sure looks that way. 68-93 and the 10th consecutive losing season and the first time since CamdenYards opened that they drew less than 2 million. Between them and the Nationals, will the DC-Baltimore area EVER get some decent baseball.
