I recently acquired McBride via the WW, and was wondering if anyone had any insight on him. I don't know much, besides the fact that he was a 2nd round pick and is penciled in as the starter on the left with Hali moving over to the RDE spot. Right now he is my #5 or 6 DL, in a start 3 league. I needed some backup protection and he looks to have decent upside. Any thoughts are appreciated.

It was also my first thought that McBride would move over to the LDE as part of the post-Allen shuffle, but the Chiefs apparently aren't going to align that way. It'll be Alfonso Boone that gets the first shot at end, with McBride apparently moving back into a rotational role behind Ron Edwards and Glenn Dorsey. It may not stay that way if McBride works himself out of the doghouse (to start or earn rotational snaps) or Boone can't handle an outside role, but for now his value has taken a sizable hit.

Boone was pretty effective at times as a 3-technique last year, but probably doesn't project to huge numbers at end.

To add to the equation; what about this Johnston kid? I heard he's a clone of Jared Allen. What are his chances at contributing early/often? The Chiefs don't have a lot of depth at the DE spot. I'm assuming he'll be given every opportunity to see the field.

From what I can piece together, he has some work to do to become an every down player, but he could work his way into more than a situational role at some point if he proves he can hold up against the run.

Hey, for a small person he did a nice job at rookie camp and nearly earned a "sleeper alert" thread.

For this thread's purposes, I think it's safe to say the OP bet on the wrong horse. McBride is a little lost in the mix and possibly in the doghouse as Jene mentioned. He probably belongs on the inside developing at UT. Boone is a 32 year old DT being moved to DE. Boone was also their best interior player last year and if they dream of a solid defense then Boone and Dorsey on the inside is the shortest term fix. So a DE needs to develop for Boone to play where he belongs. Johnston doesn't have much competition here. He's an interesting player in an interesting spot. We'll throw up the "alert" after the next OTA if it's warranted.

I have a lot of respect for those who go back to college later in life. It worked for Gooden. He got a good job.

Sounds very similar to what was being said about Jared Allen early in his career.

looks like mcbride has been moved to a starter at DE. adjust accordingly...

The Chiefs have spent the four weeks since the start of training camp tinkering with their pass rush. McBride and Tank Tyler joined the starting defensive line, replacing Alfonso Boone and Ron Edwards.

QUOTE
5 Will the pass rush come together? The Chiefs moved end Turk McBride and tackle Tank Tyler into the first team for good last week, primarily after McBride had two sacks and a forced fumble last week against Arizona. Kansas City likes the youth along its line, but the Chiefs would like to see more sacks out of that young group. Tamba Hali has been quiet, and the Chiefs want to see more out of the player who’ll be counted on to replace at least some of Jared Allen’s production. Glenn Dorsey also should get more playing time after being involved in only a handful of plays last week.

Does he really have that much potential? I mean, if he is, then he's REALLY flying under the radar...

I didn't think much of McBride, but this pre-season, he's really grown on me. He has nice upside, like his motor and he's played well this summer. Unless KC's offense can step it up, his sack opportunities may be limited, only Denver, Oakland and Miami faced less pass attempts then Kansas City in 2007.

29 Kansas City 493 (30.8)
30 Denver 488 (30.5)
31 Oakland 466 (29.1)
32 Miami 439 (27.4)

that's what i took from this. he's not in a great situation but i think he's a great value play.

Well, I was an Osi owner in an IDP league. I may just pick him up as my sleeper since it's a wasteland in DL free agents...

I believe both RG Neal and RT Kaczur have been nursing some injuries, and combined with McBride's impressive three-sack pre-season and the chances NE wants to pass early and often, I like McBride as a sneaky play this week.

Even better...

Neal is on the PUP list and Yates will be starting at RG. Even though Brady does not take many sacks, McBride could get lucky this week.

McBride played well, but he's much better against the run than he is the pass. Guess that figures for a 280lb. tweener. 4 solos, 1 assist. I look for him to develop as the season goes on. I actually think this guy has some talent.
